Just got this:

Today’s update from O2 Guru Sarah
We've got all the information you'll need to swap your sim once you get an iPhone 4.

How to get ready to swap your sim >

Find out more about iPhone 4 tariffs >

But the links don't work, it says server too busy. Any PAYG updates (if you got it to work)?

Just lucked out and spoken to a very clued-up member of the Orange iPhone team. Gave my spare registered (Orange Wed) PAYG mobile number, and all done. Said they had the email memo this morning, and it was now a very simple process on their system to get a replacement iPhone 4 micro-SIM to replace your existing SIM.

Two minutes later, my micro-SIM was ordered and it is now winging its merry way towards me. Told me I'd have it before picking up my iPhone on the 24th, and didn't have the heart to tell him I'm waiting for the white one anyway

Result.

Oh and whilst I had him on the phone asked about SIM-only tariffs on Orange.

Only one apparently - pretty much equivalent to my existing O2 Simplicity (600+1200+unlimited data) except £25/month instead of £20. Also mentioned they will be doing a 6-month contract in July, no word on pricing yet, but obviously will be around that competitive £15-20 mark.

Now that VV isn't such a unique feature of O2 (hullomail app), I am seriously considering Orange for the iPhone 4 even if it's an extra £60 annually, as I've generally found O2 coverage lacking.

This is a direct quote form the latest O2 Guru Sarah email (my bold):

"When you get your new iPhone 4 you'll receive a new micro sim with it.
Please note iPad micro sims will not work with the iPhone 4."

We've been over this. What I take that to mean is that micro-sims with an active plan attached to them won't work in the iPhone because there's no voice or sms tariff assigned to them.

What's still unclear is whether blank, unactivated sims which were dispatched for intended use with the iPad will work or not. In principle they should.

nope i just tried to switch my sim over to the micro sim and it said the SSN number (the 19 digit one) was wrong. Therefore the iPad microsims do not work with iPhones

I think you're probably right but I'm not going to risk it by transferring my valuable telephone number onto an iPad sim.

EDIT: Seems not. This thread moves so fast it is difficult to keep up! I missed the last few posts.

Suprised its taken this long for someone to try this lol. Top marks for effort!

Some of you might be interested in this if you're still looking to sell your old iPhone.

I was about to post my iPhone 3G 16GB to o2recycle (they quoted me £173 +10%) when I decided to pop into CEX and see what they offered.

To my surprise they had it down for up to £255 (for a grade A). As there was a tiny scratch on the back, mine was downgraded to B, but I still got £215 for it. Not too bad!

So if still looking to sell you old iPhone, it might be worth checking what CEX offer for it. Note that my phone was officially unlocked which I believe they take into account and it might get you a bit more.

Seems O2 Have switched their simplicities over... So does this mean if i take out one of these, i lose my Unlimited data in Oct?

According to the O2 person I spoke to on the phone earlier, if you take it out before June 24th you get the full unlimited data package. You may wish to ring them up and check though, because it could be that I just get to keep my unlimited data (I already have an unlimited data simplicity contract)

no worries, it's just annoying that i can't have my micro sim with simplicity on it ready for launch day, looks like i'll have to wait a day to fully use my new iphone...which is retarded either way.

oh and if they try to get me to buy £10 credit when i buy the PAYG model i will tell them where to shove it ;)

I just tried the swap my sim with an iPad sim and got

Sorry, there's something wrong with the serial number you entered. Please re-enter your sim serial number.

Quite bizarrely, despite being due an upgrade since February, eagerly waiting for the iPhone 4, following every development, registering for updates from all carriers, and then reserving one at the Apple Store, I have woken up this morning with a slight case of:

"Why the hell am I even thinking of spending such a daft about of money on a phone!"

I'm currently looking at cheap handsets to buy outright and have on a monthly contract.

Someone bring me back around please!

I understand where you're coming from, I'm getting New Gadget Fatigue syndrome (NGFS, I'm patenting that name at the moment)

Has anyone thought about protection for iPhone 4. All well and good the glass is tougher but i've always used Power Supports film and they've served me well. Surprised they haven't announced anything for iPhone 4.

I was hoping there'd be a Power Support front and back package. I've always used them and if you apply them right, you can't tell they're on. I was wondering if the current ones would fit the new phone too. Might just get some and chop them if they dont quite fit until better ones are available.

Radtech are doing their ClearCal covers which are the same but they wont be on sale until after the phone is released.

I'm with NatWest but I think they all do it to some degree or other - pay a monthly fee and get phone insurance, travel insurance and breakdown cover plus some other extras - usually a pretty good deal compared to buying those things separately.

I would just say that Natwests mobile phone cover was a nightmare for me. Took me 2 weeks to get my claim settled and that's without ANY complication.

I'm currently using SuperCover (http://www.supercoverinsurance.com/mobile-insurance.php). They seem okay but I've yet to claim with them.

yeah, and they aren't going to be offering unlimited data for much longer:

Sorry but this is wrong, they are offering free data when you buy a 'Goody-Bag' bundle, it's only not free from June 30th if you use it as a normal PAYG and don't buy a monthly bundle, a.k.a A goody bag. I appreciate the wording on the site is a bit misleading but I can guarantee they offer unlimited data should you buy a goody bag. As per my previous post, the free data promotion that is ending is only for those who simply top-up and use the credit as normal, without buying bundles.

I hope that makes sense, but I can assure you it's right. I made the same mistake myself and I urge you to check the site again, or even check the GiffGaff messageboards for further confirmation.

ie. See here: http://tinyurl.com/3xktsw4, http://tinyurl.com/3axjhjg etc.

Hope that helps.

just wondering if voda do pertty much same as O2 in terms of mins an txts for same amount who would be the better network?

I've been with Vodafone for about 10 years, I think I've nearly always been the last one to lose reception whenever I'm in a remote place with friends. Lake district coverage for example seems to be better than most.

I just phoned o2 about something unrelated to iPhones but when on the phone I quizzed her about micro sims and explained I ordered a sim free iPhone from apple not an o2 phone and confirmed this with her twice and she said

It would come with a blank micro sim and it can be activated with us. Don't know how true that is. It sounds unlikely.

Would of been nice to be able to order a sim with the phone like you could with the iPad.

I understand that you're concerned about the Micro SIM Don't worry, I'll
quickly look into the matter.

Julian, There are two ways to get a micro sim. If you've registered to
receive iPhone 4 updates from O2, you may receive a micro sim from us in
the post before iPhone 4 is available. To register please click on the
link below

http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/micro-sims.html

We can't guarantee that everyone who registers for iPhone 4 updates will
get a micro sim, so if you don't get one in the post, don't worry. If
you decide to buy iPhone 4, you will get your micro sim at the same time
as your iPhone 4.

reply which is true... I did order a Sim Only vodafone but got a text that my order is delayed... mhh
So you can not guarantee an existing customer getting a micro sim now will you send me one?

And does "you will get your micro sim at the same time as your iPhone 4" only apply when I buy the iPhone from O2 or from Apple directly as I Apple sells unlocked and without any Sim cards their phones so I do not understand how there will be an O2 simcard with the phone?

Vodafone already offers new customers micro-sims on sim only plans....
