....because you still have to buy the iPhone at a cost of about £500 / £600

Ah right, I see, got it now!

So I'm currently on a simplicity contract - Will I be able to walk into store (early) on the 24th and grab a phone, without taking out a new contract? or do i HAVE to sign up to one of these contracts? (or alternatively wait till the PAYG ones are released!)

Been covered a million billion times already, not applicable to existing tariffs. O2 have confirmed this...

"New and upgrading customers will continue to receive unlimited data as a promotion until 1 October. From that date, they will be able to buy additional data Bolt Ons which include 500MB for £5 or 1GB for £10 and O2 will ensure customers have the ability to easily monitor their use by sending them regular text messages.

All O2 customers will continue to receive unlimited Wi-Fi through The Cloud and BT Openzone hotspots.
Existing customers will continue under their present terms, unlimited data usage with an Excessive Use Policy.
Ronan Dunne concluded “By doing this, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable data experience for all customers and the huge possibilities that technology will create over the coming years.”

Yeah yeah I know this already as I've said before. But why have they worded it that "all" smartphone tariffs will be culled in October 1st. It's not like o2 have said something one day and gone the otherway after

OK thanks for that info, saved me hours of wading through the posts! EDIT: the wording still worries me though.

Yeah, but it'll cost £500 for 16 and £600 for 32gb

Then you should know, ALL new and upgrading customers will be culled on October 1st not exisiting

is anyone concidering the business 24m tarriff. You get unlimited calls to O2 numbers (most of my mates) and free calls to 10 landlines. Plus u can upgrade in 12months.

Looks like a good deal. My mate moved to one last year when he got his 3GS and hes able to get the iPhone 4 in July (12 months into a 24m contract)

Weird thing is he doesn't have a business

Haha just phoned my local three shop and was told no one in the uk is getting an iphone 4 before july. not even apple at the apple stores. I just laughed and hung up

I'm trying to get confirmation from o2 that you will indeed still be able to do the 12 month upgrades with the new plans, and what handset costs are involved in the upgrade (the T&C's don't give any indication).

If so, then we'll certainly be going for that one I think - unless Three come out with something amazing.

I am crap at quoting on forum boards but not as bad as the maths I see people throwing around:

18 x £30 + £209 = £749
24 x £25 + £279 = £879

That £130 difference is also reflected in a 6 month difference in service.

If you want to keep on a cycle with new iPhone releases then you need to move to where there is a Simplicity tariff to carry you over the next 6 months so that:

18 x £35 = 630 + 179 = £809
24 x £30 = 720 + 179 = £899

However, 6 months of rolling on a 30 day simplicity will set you back £120 and bring the 18 month to £929 over the same period and for the same minutes, texts, etc.

Maybe my maths are wrong, but I see a difference of £30 over 2 years for the same service (that is £1.25 a month).

Also on their blog the moderators and other Three staff have said more than once that current Three contract holders will definitely be able to get a replacement micro sim. This suggests that they have no problem with you using your existing plan on the iphone, which would be a relief due to what other people have been saying.

I'm really hoping this is true. The gamble I've been taking is not to preorder an iPhone, and try to get one from 3 instead hoping they'll have the best deal. If this is accurate, then the gamble would have paid off

Seems as you can't understand my point so maybe I'll quote it again. Like I say, o2 have gone back on their word before. So when they say existing customers will be A-OK, then go on and say:

Unlimited data on all smartphone tariffs is a promotion until 1 October 2010. Excessive usage policy and terms apply.

They could have said iPhone's, not just smartphones.

You might be able to see why certain folk are a little worried..that's all I meant..

Just had a chat with O2 now... may be of interest to some..

You're through to Michael.
You: Hi Michael
Michael: Hi there. My name's Michael I am an O2 advisor, may I take your name please?
You: Hi its Neil
You: I've just got a quick question about simplicity and iPhone
Michael: Hi there, how are you today?
You: yeah Im great thanks you?
Michael: I'm great thank you for asking and how can i help you today on the o2 website?
Michael: and i'll be happy to help you..
You: Yeah Im just wondering about the iPhone simplicity 12 month plans
You: and basically the data side of it
Michael: ok..
You: it lists unlimited but with fair use policy applying.... I just wondered what teh actual fair use limit was and if its likely to drop from unlimited to 500MB like the iPhone 4 tariffs have
Michael: it is 3GB a month on the sim only.. the iphone 4 are new plans..
Michael: so if you order now with the sim only iphone 12month sim it will stay the same..
You: ahh excellent! Im no where near 3GB a month but I am over 500MB so it looks like thats a serious option for me
Michael: Great ok..
You: Another question is will O2 actually be doing preorders online for the iPhone4?
Michael: Great and would you like to order that package now.. it will only take 5 minutes to complete your order and i can keep this window open as you do to assist you further should you need me.
You: or will it be a case of wait till 24th?
Michael: and it will be the 24th..
You: great, I'll wait till the 24th to do it then but thanks for your help! much appreciated!

So it seems like I'm going to stick on the O2 simplicity plan..

Are there any similar SIM only deals with other companies? Currently I'm looking at Simplicity 15 (300 mins & unlimited texts for £15 a month), but it would be nice to have some more minutes.

Can anyone help?

What to do with Orange...

I currently have their 30 Day SIM Only service using it with my O2 unlocked 3GS.

I've spoken to 4 different people in iPhone Support and I'm told I can only have a micro-SIM if I buy a Orange handset but cannot transfer my number from my current contract.

Guess I'll have to cut it...

Let's see how 'cheap' it will be

Thanks - and the next question is..... will I be able to do that on 24th at an O2 shop?

No, O2 won't have PayG phone available at launch. You'll have to get the phone direct from Apple. (Which you're incredibly unlikely to do on launch day unless you get very very very very lucky at an Apple Store)

Having looked at the new o2 tariffs - Why on earth would someone NOT go for one of the simplicity tariffs?

Is there something I'm missing? As far as I knew, the only difference between a normal iPhone Pay monthly tariff and the simplicity ones is that you don't get visual voicemail???

you may be able to randomly throw £500-600 on a phone at will, but some of us need to find an alternative way of spreading the cost, or have other priorities.

Haha just phoned my local three shop and was told no one in the uk is getting an iphone 4 before july. not even apple at the apple stores. I just laughed and hung up

I went to the orange shop, and i got told the exact same thing,

So, basically yet another in-store jerk. I wouldn't have been so irritated if he'd just said he didn't know, it's the fact that he claimed to know for sure that no network was planning to issue micro-SIMs that really annoyed me.

I think some staff just work on the assumption that all customers are stupid, they themselves are too lazy to do an intelligent, well informed sale and they can't be bothered to learn.

Just my 2p.
