OK - another post on SIM cutting.

I just got a couple of free T-Mobile SIMs to practice on, and took the O2 SIM out of my 3GS just to compare and the two SIMs are very different!

The T-Mobile SIM has a very rectangular active area with three segments on each side and one in the middle. Cutting this to the microSIM size would be no problem.

HOWEVER, my iPhone O2 SIM (originally from my 3G), which is the one I would need to cut down has a much bigger, almost square, active area with four segments on either side and one in the middle. If I cut this down to microSIM size I'd have to cut some of the active area as it's bigger than the microSIM size.

Up till now I wasn't worrying to much about the microSIM thing even though my iPhone 4 is coming straight from Apple, now I'm thinking I'm going to be reliant on O2 sending me a microSIM beforehand and I think the chances of that happening are ZERO.

So if you're planning on taking a knife to your SIM come the 24th, you might want to take a look at it first!

Don't worry, with my iPad I’ve cut down quite a few sims, nearly everyone has been different. You just need to make sure you measure the dimensions from the centre of the chip. Cutting off bits of the (metal) chip hasn't made a difference.

Bit concerned here!

On the left is the SIM O2 gave me at the start of my 3GS contact, on the right is some old Orange SIM.

The O2 SIM's contact area is around 2/3 that of the standard SIM. Any ideas if I'll still be able to micro-SIMify it?

The they can both be turned into micro sims. The one with the smaller contact area is the same as my Three one that's currently running in my iPad.

I think the old one is unlikely to support 3G, I had to change my old O2 sim when I got an iPhone last year for that reason.

Do we know if the Apple stores will be doing Vodafone contracts? I'd like to avoid the Vodafone shop, I remember they were pretty useless a few years ago. Apple stores make you used quality customer service, I don't thunk it'll be the same experience anywhere else.

Will we get a fancy bag this year? Loved the 3G bag, even if it did say "mug me!" on it!

Anyone that's chopping up sims - have you tried looking for the actual specifications of micro sims?

I don't need to, as I'll be taking out a new contract or upgrading, but I'd have thought that if you can find the micro sim specifications then you'll know the measurements required for the chip to fit and make contact without having to guess?

Either that, or get hold of a microsim adaptor, and draw through the hole in the adaptor onto the sim? http://microsim-shop.com/

Just a thought?

No, it works fine in my 3GS (3G, voice EDGE etc).

Found this that show me I can still trim it though. It'll just be a bit scarier cutting through the contact area rather than just the plastic.

CPW will be doing vodafone contracts

You do need to be a bit careful on the sim with fewer contacts. Make sure the contacts are central to the carrier. In the picture is my trimmed Three sim that is on 3G (even though it has less contacts) and beside it is the carrier from my iPad. The other sim is a standard Vodafone one.

My SIM is around 10 years old from one2one and works fine on 3G. If when I cut it it breaks, and they won't send a MicroSIM, I'll get a new style one that is 'easier' to cut down.

Hi, just joined after spending the past few days reading this epic thread

A question regarding pre-orders from Apple. If I was to pre-order the phone now from Apple (currently showing as shipping by July 2nd), up until what time before the shipping date will I be allowed to cancel the order? does the payment get taken form my account straight away?

I only ask as I am holding out to see what deal Tesco mobile will offer as none of the other networks' deals impress me. If I like what Tesco are offering, then could I just cancel my order from Apple for the sim-free handset say, next week for example?

Cheers :)

I am getting a little frustrated with the whole thing to be honest. Bought my iphone 4 through the apple store and have a delivery date of the 24th. Unfortunately Orange can give me absolutely no information on how to obtain a micro sim which means I am unlikely going to be able to use the thing on the 24th unless I can get one from the Orange store. So basically I am going to have to wait in for Fedex to deliver the iPhone and then take the car 20 miles to my 'local' Orange store and hope that they can give me a micro sim that they can transfer my Contract number too. Seems so disorganized to me. Orange blamed Apple and Apple blamed Orange, well done the two of you.

Not sure how late you can leave it (probably right up until it ships), but if you have the spare cash, I'm sure you could sell it unopened for the same price or higher than you bought it ;)

I hate that people have bought 2 with the purpose of selling one, but if you do end up with a spare one for whatever reason, why not?

Hello everyone.

Just finished talking to a Vodafone rep named Barry on their online live person chatroom thingy.

They don't have any news on when Vodafone will be getting the new iPhone. In fact, he was quite suprised when I told him tha o2 have released quite a comprehensive list of tariffs and prices. He went to check for himself.

This post is for all the two people, like myself, who are on Vodafone.;)

I had an online chat with a rep from Vodafone called Tom and he said that Vodafone will be doing upgrades to the Iphone 4 in store and online from the 24th but he was a bit vague on whether there would be a pre-order option before the 24th. He said that they had no official word on pre-order yet. Didn't ask about tarriffs.

The thing is, I have I've 'reserved' at the apple store. Also, I avoid CPW like the plague, same with phones4U. But, desperate times etc, it's an option ;-) cheers.

How can CPW actually say what they are doing when non if the networks know?

That's the same for me so I have cancelled my order at apple in the hope that I can pre order with orange so it all gets done in one go

As far as we know, Apple charge when they ship and you can cancel more or less up to that point. HOWEVER many people have had the funds to cover the purchase locked out on their credit cards, so be sure you not only have £499/£599 spare on your card to cover the purchase but that you have some more to cover your usual credit card usage. I'd have thought the lock would go shortly after you cancel, if you were to go that route.

Is the t-mobile network any good when compared to the others?
I have my 32gb being delivered on the 24th and can't decide who to go with.
I only need a few minutes and texts but want lots of fast data.

Still it's nice to have the choice though.;)

I got 2 t-mobile sims to practice on before butchering my orange sim card and I got a couple of other non uk ones laying around too if I need to use them.

After the 24th I am sure a lot of this confusion with microsims will simply go away.

Probably better off looking at 3 instead of t-mobile too be honest if you want speed ;)

Unlikely, im pretty dedicated to my pc! I'd hate to have to re learn how to do all the nifty little things i know about PC's! I want an iphone so much because 5mp camera + flash, awesome internet browsing, can ditch my ipod (oops thats right i forgot about that one!), plus app store = awesome games on my phone!

Dammit, now im just making myself more antsy about the whole thing!

My solution, next year apple should produce as many iphones they sell this year in the first 4 months ready for launch day 2011!

Too right, gawd .. will we all be back here next year asking similar questions about iPhone 5?

And as for PCs, I've got Windows 7 running on my Mac.

Yeah, app store is brill. Happened to notice a Nintendo DS game on Amazon the other day for £27, I'd forgotten how pricey they were. That would buy a heck of a lot of apps.
