Has anyone had any luck picking up an O2 Pay & Go micro sim at one of their shops? I'd reserved a PAYG iPhone from Apple but with O2 now saying they won't be available at launch I was wondering where to get one. My local apple store said I can get a sim free one instead but it's fairly useless sans sim. And I'm not going down the Frankensim route.

Though I've got a USB broadband modem on O2 - they said it was a microsim but it seems a little longer than the iPad ones I've seen.

Probably better off looking at 3 instead of t-mobile too be honest if you want speed ;)

Disagree with you here.

3 use T-mobile's 3g network.

As of the 1st July Orange and T-mobile start the process of combining their 2g and 3g network coverage around the UK.

Not quite true. 3 use T-Mobile 3g ONLY where 3 themselves dont have coverage. Under normal circumstances you would be connected to three.

According to Ofcom's 2009 report, 3 currently has largest 3g coverage.

(According to Ofcom, 3g coverage in terms of percentage is 3 > Orange > Vodafone > O2 > T-Mobile)

Had no luck with o2 in getting a microsim sent out, they are starting to annoy me to be honest as they don't even seem to understand apple are selling simfree unlocked phones.

So now i'm thinking of switching to vodafone sim only, I just called them up and they said they can send out an iPhone sim only microsim as soon as I order. Voda and o2 signal is pretty much the same where I am. So which network do you all think is best stick with o2 and hope they work out what a microsim is or go with vodafone, any recommendations on service/reliability would be welcome.

Oh and I don't really care about visual voice mail.

Fair point but as and when the T-mobile and Orange networks are combined. surely then they will be the largest by far.

Also, who has the best coverage is really irrelevant to anyone as every UK operator has dead spots where you wont get coverage. Best off to get your postcode compared amongst the operators. For me T-mobile is best as I live close to the mast. O2 is the worst in my area.

Each area to their own

While 3 use T-mobile's network, they do have their own network as well. They have a sharing agreement in place, since they both didn't have 3G coverage that could compete with O2, Vodafone and Orange. Therefore T-mobile can use 3's network and vice-versa.

T-mobile's 2G network and both companies core networks are not shared.

That won't be for at least another couple of years though. For now the networks are operating separately even though they are one company.

To everyone STILL going on about O2 capping your data on existing contracts, why dont you print off thier OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE HERE to give you all peace of mind!

Use a highlighter pen on "Existing customers will continue under their present terms, unlimited data usage with an Excessive Use Policy."

Stop listening to the poorly trained call centre staff

if you sign up for simplicity with unlimited data BEFORE the 24th june 2010 you will KEEP your unlimited data for how ever long you have your contract.

My iPhone won't arrive until July 5 but my o2 BlackBerry contract is now eligible for an upgrade. Should I switch to a BlackBerry Simplicity plan before 24 June (ie before I get the iPhone)?

o2 suggested that I wait until I have the iPhone but then I'll miss out on the unlimited data deal.

Sheesh, I can't even ask the question properly, brain addled from reading posts here.

Anybody else in similar situation, ie switching from non-iPhone contract to Simplicity? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello everyone.

Just finished talking to a Vodafone rep named Barry on their online live person chatroom thingy.

They don't have any news on when Vodafone will be getting the new iPhone. In fact, he was quite suprised when I told him tha o2 have released quite a comprehensive list of tariffs and prices. He went to check for himself.

This post is for all the two people, like myself, who are on Vodafone.;)

Vodafone told me their contracts will be announced on Friday. Pass the salt.

How very true. Always best to check out your postcode for home coverage, however coverage in general is also important as you want the widest for when you go travelling. :)

As for the T-Mobile - Orange merger, not sure about that. The thing about the coverage maps is that most of the operators seem to have the same areas of coverage, ie. major cities, higher density areas, west coast etc.

It's also worth noting that coverage also affects speed, as the further away you are from the cell tower, the more lost packets, and so the more times they need to be resent.

Some info. For anyone looking to reserve an iPhone 4 in an Orange retail store:

On my way home tonight I popped into two of the Orange retail stores in Aberdeen, and got two very different responses...

First, the store in the Bon Accord centre:
Me: are you taking in-store reservations for iPhone 4?
Bored Student: no.
Me: will you have stock on launch day?
Bored Student: it's likely.
Me: what time do you open?
Bored Student: probably normal time...
Manager: 8am at the earliest because the Carphone Warehouse is opening at 8
Me: hmm, thanks then, bye.

Next, the store on Union Street:
Me: are you taking iPhone 4 reservations in-store?
Helpful Lady: Not really, but we can take your name and number and pretty much guarantee you one.
Me: excellent ...
<fills out form with about 8 other names on>
Helpful Lady: that's all we need just now, we'll give you a call when we have stock. The delivery isn't until Thursday morning, but we'll call when they arrive.
Me: fantastic, see you next week...

So, if you want to reserve in-store and one store isn't being helpful, try another nearby as they might be doing things very differently!

Hopefully that helps someone out...
(and yes, posted from my iPad!)

Sorry to ask this, as I remember someone asked this the other day, but I can't find it now.

I pre-ordered 2 iPhone 4's for collection from my local Apple store on the 24th. One in my name, and one in my wifes name. One PAYG (mine), one SIM Free (wife's). Will I be able to collect both, as she is working all day, and won't be able to make it to the store.

Thanks.

I thought it was 9 months on all contracts . Give them a call and find out.

Simplicity you can down or upgrade at any time ( even on 12 month contract! )

I just dropped from Simplicity 20 to 15 with no issue ( only been on 12 month contract since March! )

I ordered a free iPad Micro Sim to use as a template, i would guess that the micro sim would be the same for everything iPhone 4 included?

t-mobile cap the speed to 2mbit which is the same as orange. I have seen speeds with 3 as high as 5mbit in some area's and in others around 3mbit.

Should i stick with my sim-free iPhone or go contract?

Well i thought at the time getting th iPhone 4 sim-free was a good idea and would save me money. So heres what i did:-

Sim free iPhone 4 from Apple 32gb black £599
Then setup a 12 month simplicity plan yesterday for 12 months. Giving me 600mins, unlimited txts and the all important and reason behind the deal Unlimited Internet.

Now i have seen the O2 iPhone tarrifs i wonder if i should stick or cancel sim free and get it through them direct.
Same tariff on contract is 18 months £40, 24 months £35 and the iPhone costs £209
I also see that they are offering until Oct so first 3 months unlimited internet before the cap starts.

My way total cost over 18months is £959 Vs O2 contract £929 (my way £30 more)

My way total cost over 24months is £1079 Vs contract £1049 (my way again £30 more)

So all i am getting really is Unlimited data for an extra 9 months over the O2 contract for £30 and also my phone is sim free too. I was told when i get my iPhone from Apple i should be able to transfer my mobile insurance over to the new iPhone (i hope this is really the case if i got from Apple instead of through O2)

So what do you guys think is the best way to go about getting my iPhone or what would you do? Is there an advantage over either scenario? I thought my way would end up also costing a bit less but turns out £30 more as O2 prices seem really good.
Please let me know and thanks for reading,
iMoo
