My credit card still shows a hold... order status also shows a June 24 delivery.

I guess it depends on the Bank. I am with HSBC.
when do you think they will charge the cards? and what will the shipping date be for a june 24 delivery???

According to reports, such as:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/10285910.stm
http://www.reghardware.com/2010/06/10/o2_limited_data_plans/

O2 is scrapping unlimited data deals for all new smartphone plans from 24 June and after.

According to the exact same BBC report you just cited, 6th paragraph from the bottom: "Existing customers will be allowed to keep their unlimited data plans until they renew their contract."

So as long as you get in before the 24th on the old plan, you should be relatively safe...

Theres a few of us from Belfast on the forums here. Im upgrading my contract with o2, would change to vodafone but there 3G coverage isnt so good.

Hi Mikey - would you mind elaborating on that? At this stage 3G coverage in Belfast and N. Ireland is my main deciding factor between O2 and Vodafone.
Cheers,

Ryan

Friends and Family discount

Hi guys, looooong time lurker first time poster.

I just got off the phone to a nice lady in staff accounts at o2 regarding the friends and family discount (staff member discount, not o2 open) who told me the following:

- At this moment in time there is no news on whether they will be able to offer the friends and family discount on iP4 from next week, but she said that that may change over the next few days.

- If they are offering the discount, you can only upgrade (or take out a new contract) with the discount at an o2 store. You'll need to take the employee number with you as before, so that rules out upgrading at an Apple store whilst keeping your discount.

- I also asked if i could transfer to a business tariff and keep the friends and family discount, but they do not offer that discount on business tariffs.

- However, i was able to downgrade my tariff over the phone to the current iPhone plans, ie not the new iP4 ones. You can only drop one tariff at a time, but I've kept my unlimited data (hooray!), but will be charged for MMS and international texts though (boo!). I also enquired about visual voicemail and was told that it would be included in my minutes so i will NOT be charged for them as a previous poster was told.

- I then spoke to someone in the o2 home broadband and asked him about the iPad microsim that i received today. He told me that i could try it but i'm better off holding out for a iP4 microsim which you can get from Monday.

I also went to the Liverpool One store yesterday and enquired about the white phones. The specialist told me that there was some sort of manufacturing problem but that they should have some on the 24th. I asked whether i could swap my reserved black one for a white one and he said that as long as there is stock then it shouldn't be a prob.

Hopefully this info will be useful to some people and apologies for the long first post.

And is anyone here going to the Liverpool store next week?

OK [daft question coming up] what is visual voicemail? Is it just text messages telling you you've got voicemail?

Also, does using GPS eat into data allowance. I would like to use an app that tracks how far you've cycled.

Do both. Get your pre-order for Apple in now, before the shipping date slips again, and then try to get one on Thursday if you can get to a store early. If you get one just cancel the Apple order - they won't take your cash until it ships. If you don't get one then at least you have your order in.

Great advice. Just done it. Loving this forum.

I'm on the same tariff as you with my BlackBerry and was going to change to the same Simplicity tariff as you to retain the unlimited data but then we miss out on visual voicemail.

I almost went for the 16gb but others here pointed out that we will probably use up more memory because of the video recording capability of this model.

Good luck at MK! :)

I actually don't mind visual voicemail, as I've never hd it when I used my 3G! So I can't miss it really :D

Is it confirmed Simplicity has no VVM?

Visual Voicemail basically allows you to see your voicemail messages in a list on your handset (and who they are from) without having to call up your voicemail and listen to each of them in turn. You can then directly select which message you won't to listen to without having to go through voice prompts etc. and delete it using the menu on the phone itself. Quite handy, but not a killer feature IMHO - I've been coping without it just fine since leaving O2!

Under normal situations the iPhone's AGPS will use a small amount of data to acquire its initial fix (it obtains satellite timing data from the cellular network rather than waiting to download it from the satellite signals - this enbables AGPS devices to obtain a GPS fix more quickly), but that shouldn't really be too much to worry about. Sustained use of GPS shouldn't use much data at all (unless the application does a lot of transfer of data as it goes). In iOS4 you can specifically disable all cellular data though (just like you can when roaming), so you could always turn toggle that so that the GPS would just get a fix the old fasioned way (purely via the satellites) and therefore use no cellular data at all.

Essentially allows you to see, play, pause, rewind etc. all your voicemails, identified visually by sender, without having to dial in to a call-based menu so to speak. Like an email client for voicemail is the best way to describe it. Example demo on YT if you still don't get it.

From experience ordering previous apple products, it could be tuesday when things start shipping... can't be sure though. As far as I know, Apple charge cards on dispatch.

I think that seems to be what a lot of people are saying – but I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

The main reason I posted those links was just to show even though O2 are offering unlimited data plans for the Dell Streak, this is going to change from 24 June.

Orange have made a similar statement – this was linked waaaay back in this thread, but one or two people thought it was iPhone-specific.

In any event, all providers (well, just about all) are putting a cap on data, and it’s something I suppose we just need to get used to. I read something earlier that Ofcom want to ban companies from using ‘unlimited data’ albeit with fair usage, as it’s misleading because all companies do have some sort of cap.

You don't need to 'cope' without it. Just install (free) Hullomail app which provides VV functionality whatever your network.

No. Visual voicemail provides a list of all your messages, with who has called, at what time, and how long the message is. You can listen to messages out of order, and easily delete the ones you don't want, without having to go through them all as you do when you listen to them. I wouldn't say visual voicemail is make or break, but it's a nice touch. I'm sure if you google it you can see some images of what it looks like.

Also, GPS does not use data allowance.

Normal Simplicity doesn't, iPhone Simplicity does - under the O2 tariff pages for the new iPhone, this is confirmed.

Vodafone are meant to be introducing it, but no idea what tariffs this would be on for free.

I live and work in east belfast, I can mostly always get a good strong 3G signal while in Belfast and always great Edge coverage but with Vodafone a few of my friends barely get 3G or Edge and can even be on GPRS at times which is just ridiculous.

aren't the iphones coming straight from the factory in china im sure thats what "Fast Ship (EMEA)" means, and if they get shipped on tuesday from china im sure they wont get here on thursday, when i pre ordered the ipad for 28th may launch it was shipped 6 days before on 22nd,

So after looking at the tariffs and handset prices that have so far been published, I think I've identified the cheapest options for some of the more common Minute quantities...
Code:
minutes months network handset monthly total next best network 2nd choice perks
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
300 18 giffgaff £599 £15 £869 £899 vodafone 1GB wifi
300 24 giffgaff £599 £15 £959 £989 vodafone 1GB wifi
600 18 O2 £209 £40 £929 £939 vodafone extra 0.5GB data
600 24 O2 £209 £35 £1049 £1059 vodafone extra 0.5GB data
unlimited 18 O2 £29 £65 £1199 £1229 giffgaff unlimited data
unlimited 24 giffgaff £599 £35 £1439 £1469 O2 unlimited wifi
Next best shows the next best total cost along with any perks the next best has over the overall cheapest.

my 3gs had same shipment. assuming it will be the same - from china - to your door via UPS

Just in case this has not been posted already this is just to clarify that pay and go phones purchased from Apple directly are NOT unlocked.

An iPhone purchased at the Apple Online Store with the Pay & Go service from O2 can be used only with an O2 SIM. Should you choose to return your iPhone for any reason within 14 calendar day remorse period of receiving your order, and you have activated your iPhone, please read your contract with O2 for any refund you may be entitled on your credit.

An iPhone purchased at the Apple Online Store with the Pay as you go service from Orange can be used only with an Orange SIM. Should you choose to return your iPhone for any reason within 14 calendar day remorse period of receiving your order, and you have activated your iPhone, please read your contract with Orange for any refund you may be entitled on your credit.

There was some confusion as to if Pay and Go phones are unlocked so this without a doubt answers that.

Well my iPad came from China and that took about 5 days to get here. It was dispatched on the 22nd and was delivered on the 27th (day before official UK release). If the iPhones are also coming direct from China then I expect they will either be shipping today or tomorrow to get here for Thursday.

My pre-order (from the first batch and due on the 24th) still says Not yet shipped though...

fair bit of noise in them photos, not as amazing as first seen from WWDC  cant be bothered to download the vid so cant comment!

Yeah, first photograph looks quite noisy. Second is extremely overexposed, and the rest seem badly anti-aliased. Could just be the conditions though, and maybe the Jpeg compression and reduction in size.

On the other hand I am quite impressed with the video.
