That absolutely sucks. The F&F discount is the only thing keeping me tied to O2 at present. If i lose that at the Apple Store on Thursday, then i might as well change to a better suited network with more flexible data plans. What a crock!!

I'm assuming you can still keep it though as long as you take the staff number with you, and you get to and o2 shop on Thursday...

I'm pretty sure that applies to the 3GS when it was available on PAYG.

Note is says ONLINE STORE - you can't order PAYG online from Apple, you've got a confirmation for an order of a sim free - unlocked phone.

I wouldn't panic!

I'm not panicing :D i know i ordered the sim-free version and i know thats what i'll get...just thought i'd post what the email said at the bottom even though it doesnt apply to anyone except those who buy pay and go at an apple store (maybe :p )...i can only think they are writing it if they offer pay and go in the future online.

I was mainly posting it to show that if you buy pay and go from an apple store on thursday, either through reservation or walk in, it is likely to be locked.

"What if I'm not an existing O2 customer?

We'd love you to join O2, however we always try to give our existing customers priority. As soon as we are able to, we will offer iPhone 4 to everyone who wants one on O2."

Ouch! That'll cost 'em!

Just in case this has not been posted already this is just to clarify that pay and go phones purchased from Apple directly are NOT unlocked.

An iPhone purchased at the Apple Online Store with the Pay & Go service from O2 can be used only with an O2 SIM. Should you choose to return your iPhone for any reason within 14 calendar day remorse period of receiving your order, and you have activated your iPhone, please read your contract with O2 for any refund you may be entitled on your credit.

An iPhone purchased at the Apple Online Store with the Pay as you go service from Orange can be used only with an Orange SIM. Should you choose to return your iPhone for any reason within 14 calendar day remorse period of receiving your order, and you have activated your iPhone, please read your contract with Orange for any refund you may be entitled on your credit.

There was some confusion as to if Pay and Go phones are unlocked so this without a doubt answers that.

Not so simple I'm afraid - that's for the existing phones (bearing mind mind that Apple don't sell unlocked iPhone 3G/3GS's). The iPhone 4 PAYG issue is going to be a whole new ball game when it comes to be locked or not.

haha, I can't understand what O2 are playing at! They think they can make their contracts more expensive, impose a stupid data cap and prevent themselves getting new customers?! Clearly they have an aversion to making a profit!

That's interesting. Might be worth getting a simplicity plan before launch day!
The cynic in me tells me this might not be entirely true though... the contract period is only 30 days and surely the T&C apply only to that 30 day period and can then change at any time. Hope I'm wrong, but this is taken from the T&C:

Included Unlimited Wi-Fi and Web Bolt Ons for iPhone Customers only

The Unlimited Wi-Fi and Web Bolt On is included at no extra cost for customers connecting or upgrading to any iPhone tariff until further notice. O2 reserves the right to withdraw or amend this offer at any time on reasonable notice. Participating customers will receive 30 days notice via text message if changes are made to their disadvantage. Excessive usage policy applies see Data Bolt Ons terms below.

Just a follow up to this... I wish to retract based on a conversation with O2 CS... very helpful this time around:

Chris: Hi there. My name's Chris I am an O2 advisor, may I take your name please?

You: Hi Chris, I'm Philip.

Chris: Welcome to O2. What brings you here today?

You: I'm interested in simplicity for the iPhone.

You: I was thinking of getting a 1 month simplicity plan. This includes unlimited data and wi-fi, correct?

Chris: Yes you get unlimited access to the internet and wi-fi as well.

Chris: How does that sound?

You: Sounds great. I understand though O2 will be introducing a 'cap' on this free internet in October. If I sign up to a simplicity plan today, will I still have unlimited data and wi-fi after October?

Chris: If you sign up today you will keep that unlimited allowance on your contract until you decide to cancel it.

Chris: That way you can be guaranteed to beat the cap

You: So to confirm, even though it is a 30-day rolling contract, I will get unlimited data/internet regardless of what happens in October?

Chris: That is correct.

You: That's excellent news. And if I got this today, could I use it with the new iPhone 4 launching next week?

Chris: Yes if you want to use it in your new iPhone you can just exchange the sim for a micro sim and we will keep you on that tariff.

Looks like I'll be sticking with O2 on Simplicity!

Just spoke to a couple of people at Orange customer services about getting a microsim for my sim-only contract (iPhone 25 month to month). They said they currently do not have a sim-only product for the iPhone 4 so they cannot give out microsims, but they will have something in place eventually so that you can just phone up for a replacement sim.

Its almost as if they just found out that the iPhone 4 was coming last week ...

Finally!

a bit of loyalty to existing customers. stock is obviously limited so look after the customers you've got. a bit of common sense at last

sorry - how is this sensible?! I understand that you like it because it benefits you, but it doesn't seem like a good business call. They have basically suggested that potential new iphone customers use a different network. Due to their attitude and data cap, even though I could, I won't be considering O2 when I pick up my reserved iphone from Apple.

Thanks for posting, very helpful. Looks like I will be sticking with my simplicity plan too!

I have reserved a pay and go for collection from west quay apple store in southampton, does anyone know if it would be possible to change to a sim-free unlocked instead? With the unlocked, its a case of just paying and leaving, simple as that right? i.e. they don't have to open it up for you, make you buy credit, faff around with sim cards etc.

I'm also assuming/hoping there is a separate queue for people with reservations, and that it will be considerably shorter than for walk ins..

yes. you have the option to change to a PAYG or SIM FREE when they're serving you. i'm not sure about the queues but i think they have 1 queue for reserves and 1 queue for non reserves. hope that helps

I'm on the iphone simplicity 600mins and 1200 txts UNLIMITED internet, mms takes 4 sms's, rolling for 30days all for £20

Just phoned and they confirmed in October there will be NO change at all. Apparently o2 cannot change my tariff as we've signed the deal even unless i change tariffs, o2 can't back out of the T&C according to the rep.

They can't change your tariff mid-contract, but your contract is only valid for 30 days at a time, so they can cease your unlimited data/mms, etc at any time with 30 days notice.

it doesn't benefit me at all, i'm on simplicity and am buying the handset

it's changing now, but phone companies treatment of existing customers has been shocking. it's basically been 'we've got you now, so you can **** off with decent service and deals"

they've obviously got limited stock, and had to make a call regarding who they supply to. it would've been really bad if they had only offered them to new customers. all the current customers whose deals were up would've buggered off elsewhere. yes they may lose customers to other networks, but it's customers they would've lots anyway as they don't have the handsets! they've gained some good pr though, and will do a lot for customer relations in the future
