I'm not so sure that it will be just good PR though. If I were an O2 customer, it might make me more brand loyal, but outside of that its gonna cause a lot of resentment from switchers who can't get hold of one!

Although in practice, everywhere will be sold out in a few days, so it won't make a huge difference, but I can imagine people turning up to an O2 store on Thursday, seeing that they have stock, and then being told that O2 don't want their money

It does say though "from us" meaning that if you have a reservation at Apple Store you should be able to sign up to a new contract with o2 and buy the phone from the Apple Store.

'least I hope so, or my girlfriend is screwed.... and not in a good way.
yeh they just mean getting a new iPhone from them should be fine getting a sim only account

I never had a problem with O2 and actually considered them pretty good till this launch.

The more I hear the more of a shambles they seem to becoming

At the very least you have to admit that O2 is trying to provide us with solid information instead of relying on us calling them and getting 50 different answers.

We know exactly how to get a micro sim, all tarrif options and prices (no pay g as there will be no pay g at launch) and how stock is being allocated for launch.

They are far, far, from perfect but at least I have to give them credit for that.

Looks like buying it from Apple sim free which I have reserved and going onto a 12 month £20 simplicity seems the best deal for me, especially as I get £100 off the simplicity :D

I think it's brilliant that O2 are favouring existing customers. If new customers want O2 they'll only have to wait a couple of weeks, and this is a massive show of loyalty.

I'm assuming you can still keep it though as long as you take the staff number with you, and you get to and o2 shop on Thursday...

Unfortunately the person no longer works for O2. :( The only way i could keep it is if i dont upgrade. Oh well, was nice while it lasted. Would love to buy the phones sim free, but have to get 2x (one for me, one for wife) so cant really afford a £1200 outlay at present.

Ordered a PAC code from O2. Might swap to Orange or wait and see what Three offer.

This is all Gizmodo's fault. The amount of just regular people who don't follow the Apple annual refresh would have put off buying a 3GS because they knew the iPhone 4 was coming and now that large group of customers are what's causing this initial surge and causing such limited stock problems.

wow O2 just shot themselves in the foot for new customers

Dunno, O2 already have the bulk of iPhone contracts out there, an influx of new subscribers would likely cripple their network, hence the downgraded data cap coming in October. I doubt they want to become the British AT&T! Plus, better to keep existing customers happy than pander to newbies.

It's a good day to be an Orange customer.

is there a place to see data usage online for my contract? i sold my iphone 2-3 weeks ago so cant see off the phone but want to see if i can live within the o2 500mb limit now.

Decisions, decisions.

Do I now swap to O2 to get unlimited data or sign a contract with Vodafone which would work out cheaper as I will be on a business contract...

This will be my first iPhone and I am really unsure about how much data I will use.

Just a follow up to this... I wish to retract based on a conversation with O2 CS... very helpful this time around:

Chris: Hi there. My name's Chris I am an O2 advisor, may I take your name please?

You: Hi Chris, I'm Philip.

Chris: Welcome to O2. What brings you here today?

You: I'm interested in simplicity for the iPhone.

You: I was thinking of getting a 1 month simplicity plan. This includes unlimited data and wi-fi, correct?

Chris: Yes you get unlimited access to the internet and wi-fi as well.

Chris: How does that sound?

You: Sounds great. I understand though O2 will be introducing a 'cap' on this free internet in October. If I sign up to a simplicity plan today, will I still have unlimited data and wi-fi after October?

Chris: If you sign up today you will keep that unlimited allowance on your contract until you decide to cancel it.

Chris: That way you can be guaranteed to beat the cap

You: So to confirm, even though it is a 30-day rolling contract, I will get unlimited data/internet regardless of what happens in October?

Chris: That is correct.

You: That's excellent news. And if I got this today, could I use it with the new iPhone 4 launching next week?

Chris: Yes if you want to use it in your new iPhone you can just exchange the sim for a micro sim and we will keep you on that tariff.

Looks like I'll be sticking with O2 on Simplicity!

I'll be keeping my O2 Simplicity £20 then!

Hi

I'm lucky enough to have pre-ordered one unlocked direct from Apple but haven't got a micro-sim to go in it... How do I go about getting a pay as you go micro-sim and will it have the same free 3G data as if i'd got a phone with a sim direct from a carrier (which isn't even possible yet)?

I never had a problem with O2 and actually considered them pretty good till this launch.

The more I hear the more of a shambles they seem to becoming

and who are we getting coherent information from? I dont really think they are doing any better or worse than anyone else

i would also like £100 off simplicity? Help a brother out! ;)

Surely if you really want one before and your not currently an o2 customer... you could just ring up now, sign up to a sim only package then by Thursday... your an existing customer.

As above, log into My O2 and you can view old bills and what you've used.

In 2 years the highest I've gone is 260MB, averaging more like 190MB. I'm a moderately heavy user - using 3G radio, lots of web access, maps, occasional youtube videos etc.
