Trying to find info regarding the best way to get a microsim without having to go to a shop ( I have ordered online from apple)so will have to wait in for postie

emailed o2 and also been into my local store and get the impression they aint really that arsed about helping us out

I have had a quick skim though the thread but I have kind of got lost with the will it work/wont it work and a few posters obviously getting wires crossed

anyways a couple of questions. Who has ordered a microsim from o2 under the ipad section (obviously it is just a blank sim at this point)? If so do we now how long it usually takes to receive one in the post?

cheers guys

Let's clear some of this up.

O2 iPad micro sims do not work for contract customers. I ordered one a few days ago (and already have a micro-sim adapter). It arrived yesterday so I filled out the relevant forms on the O2 site which seemed to go through fine, yet the iPad sim has not become active. I am a contract customer trying to put my iPhone contract tariff onto the microsim.

Its been suggested that an unactivated iPad sim should theoretically work. Of course, I agree or I wouldn't have bothered trying but the fact is that, for contract customers, it doesn't.

The reason I believe this to be the case is because iPad data sims appear to be delivered pre activated. I don't know all the technical detail but putting the iPad micro sim into a phone you get a carrier signal and a data signal (GPRS in my case). If the micro sim was completely deactivated then I don't believe this would be the case. Perhaps its because you're supposed to be able to use iPad micro sims (in an iPad) to connect to O2 and sign up to a data tariff that they come partially preactivated.

I hope that's conclusive enough for you. It should work but it doesn't.

Thanks for the additional info

back to the drawing board it seems, guess I'm gonna have to just get them scissors out :)

Well the thread is for people in the UK and they aren't delivering on release day to Scotland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man...

Surely they won't be delivering to the Isle of Man as it's not part of the UK and has different phone networks.

If you have bought a phone form applestore online from monday you can go to any o2 store and request a sim. Proof of ordering (order number) will be required by the O2 store.

A few questions:

1. Will Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u be selling o2/orange iPhone 4's for contracts on the day?

2. Will they take preorders? Are any stores taking preorders?

3. For the whole o2 'existing customer' do you have to be upgrading or can you just be adding a new line.

Went past carphone warehouse today in cardiff and there was a sign saying they were taking preorders/reservations for the iphone. worth going to your local one and asking.

An iPad internet-only (micro)SIM will work in an iPhone 4 just for internet.

An iPhone 4 (micro)SIM with internet access enabled/whatever will work in an iPad.

:)

yep that is correct but for the second bit. . .micro sim
is exactly the same as a normal just the size so you would just contact the network for tariffs

So there aren't separate Micro SIMs for Pay Monthly or Pay as you Go? They're just all standard?

My experience of carphone warehouse is their customer service is not worth the effort of going to their stores. Isn't this why we buy apple products, because one of their major selling points is their customer service is great so why spoil the experience by using a company that has spoiled buying a new phone already. I would rather wait for o2 or apple than dirty myself in that other store.

iPad microsims are only working for transfering PAYG SIMs onto. They won't let you transfer Contract or Simplicity.

O2 are apparently posting iPhone microsims to the first 50,000 people that signed up for information about the iPhone online to arrive Monday/Tuesday.

oh right...i didnt submit any bank details, they've not taken any money. It was simply an email saying I can pick it up on the 24th June. But it does say at the bottom its on a first come first serve basis. Am I guaranteed one as probably wont be able to make it down until at least 12pm

That's a reservation. In this case, I'm not sure, but, I don't think they guarantee it. O2 definately didn't.

OK look I'm not trying to pick a fight I thought I made myself clear. Obviously I didnt.

So: A micro sim is a micro sim and knows nothing until its programmed.
Yep :)

An iPAD sim (i.e. a data sim you are using in your iPAD with a data contract) will not work in the iphone4.

Is that simple enough?

This makes things much clearer, and yes, I on the same line as you; it's now an iPad activated SIM.

For reference, for SIM that I was referring to as an iPad SIM was one that came for the iPad, but not necessarily activated/fully provisioned on/for the iPad.

You have evidently merely ported your phone sim over to a micro sim. Can you see the difference?
Yes.

That did imply that it was a sim out of your iPAD as opposed to a simple blank micro sim?

I should have made myself clearer as well.

And with regards to "iPhone" we are in a forum talking about iPhone4 so perhaps some initial clarity would have helped....

I blame Apple for this :p. Initial clarity would have helped in all cases.

and when you're finished in the carphone warehouse head down to quikfit for the ultimate in customer service.
seriously. i waited in a pub (not complaining) for an hour one lunch break to return to the garage and find out they hadn't even found where the air conditioning re-fill valve on my SmartCar was. i googled it on my iPhone, showed them the pictures and drove the **** away haha

im currently on o2 and am looking to get a new contract on a different network. is it possible to give the new network my PAC code a few days after being connected ???

Yes. That would be fine. I've got my PAC code already from O2. Just to weigh up my options on Thursday.

So I want to get the new iPhone, who doesn't right?

I have an exam at 9-11. Does anyone have any idea or thoughts on when the iPhone will sell out in respected retailers (Orange, Carphone warehouse, Phone4U)

I really want to get it but don't wanna get down there to be horribly disappointed...

All replies are welcome!

As a last resort, queue up at the Apple store on the Friday. Why? Because of all the people who will have reserved and not bothered to pick theirs up for one reason or another. It'll probably be the best chance for anyone who hasn't reserved/pre-ordered or can't make it on the Thursday.

Hmmm..

Right, well first thing (so the rest doesn't sound weird).. I'm 15, I have a job, I pay for my iPhone contract, which is in my mum's name. I'm still in school. Right, so.. thing is, my mum is in Exeter on the 24th, and she has a conference at 9:00, it finishes at 16:00, o2/Apple/CPW shops open around 8:00 and close around 17:30 right? Well.. obviously seeing as i'm in school, I can't go to the launch can I! If I could, I would be out there at 4AM..yeah. So yeah, after talking to o2 and CPW reps yesterday, I think it would be a better idea to get my iPhone 4 at CPW, and they can call o2 and cancel my contract, and get me a new iPhone, total cost £339. What I am selling my 3G S for: £340! Anyway, to the point. How seriously are people taking this? If my mum leaves an hour early to go to Exeter, and it at CPW at 8:00, will there be a queue? or can she go straight in? Once she is in there, how long do you think it will take to do all of what I have mentioned? (get him to cancel contract, sign out new iphone, pay etc.).. will it take longer than 8:40 altogether? If it will, she said she could go after the conference around 16:20, but would there be any stock left? I probably sound really spoilt, but I was really looking forward to getting this new iPhone, and because of a delay with the screens and Apple selling them all themselves, leaving the networks with hardly any.. So yeah, my question is: will there be a long queue outside Carphone Warehouse at 8:00? Alternatively, will there be ANY stock left at 16:20? I think Apple store is ruled out though, I can imagine the queues there.. it's a big shop the one in Princesshay! Anyway, I hope someone can help me, and sorry if this message is too long! :p :apple:

Someone Please Help!!

I'm in the last 2 months of my Orange contract and am eligible for upgrade. I've reserved an iPhone 4 for pickup on the 24th and wanted to know if the upgrade process (renewing the contract, changing to a micro-SIM etc) can be done in-store on the day?? Will the Apple store have Micro-SIMS to transfer my number onto or do I have to order one from Orange before I go?!

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

It's long, but it needs paragraphs.

O2 will attempt to upgrade, not cancel the contract.

I can't tell what will happen in Exeter, but, most likely, there won't be much stock, thus your mother will need to be quick to get there. The process shouldn't last longer than 30 mins, and total time depends on queue and stock.

I doubt there will be stock at 1620, but it might be worth for her to go and have a look, or call after the conference.

This is why, I preordered online.

Yes, this can be done in-store, on the day.

I'm sure Apple will have micro-SIMs.
