They're far too slow at bringing their features up to speed.
First year - Apple introduces voice/text/GPRS only network, hails it as a simple no-nonsense network where "what we do do, we do it right, and we don't really see the advantage of the other features at this time." Everyone jumps on it anyway, because the voice quality is like they've never heard before.
Second year - wow! We've introduced 3G
Third year - wow! We've introduced MMS
Fourth year - wow! We've introduced video calling
Fifth year - wow! We've introduced voicemail!

;)

Take Voicemail from year 5, add 'Visual' at the beginning and put it in year 1. ;)

Cutting my old SIM down to Micro Sim

transferring to a micro-sim is not considered to be a new contract... you can transfer and keep your existing tariff

Guys I am sorry, I didn't mean to say that getting a micro sim meant a new O2 contract Ie another 18 or 24 month contract.

But is does constitute an upgrade which means that if you have unlimited data now you won't if you get a micro sim.

As a new or upgrading customer, you can get iPhone 4 on an 18 or 24 month tariff. Or, you can choose to pay the full Pay & Go price for an iPhone 4 and choose a Pay Monthly simplicity for iPhone tariff.

All our smartphone tariffs for iPhone include Visual Voicemail, up to 1GB of UK data and unlimited Wi-Fi.

If you get and enable a new micro sim then you are upgrading, and will lose unlimited data.

So, since everyone in the UK having preordered an iPhone is still on the Not Yet Shipped Status, I’m guessing the iPhone’s are already at the Netherlands Hub or maybe even on UK mainland?

They still say Delivers on 24th..I just hope they do!

My guess is that some of them are already in the UK, and some of them will Depart late tonight/Early Tuesday from Hong Kong to Liege, and make it's way as you said, to the Arnhem Hub in the Netherlands.

No microsims in 02 Wimbledon as of yet.

He told me they'll probably be in tomorrow but I'll need to bring in reservation evidence as usual. The guy also said 02 have no idea whats happening with amount of stock/colours until Wednesday when they get their delivery. The store(s) close at 4pm (a whole 2 hours early!) just to get ready for the next day

So he said come in a few mins before closing time on Wednesday and he'll tell meme everything. I still will get my reservation from the Apple Store M.Km so I'll see who ever there

*fingers crossed I get my microsim*

Brilliant - thanks for the info on the Wimbledon re sims - I was going to head there at lunch and pick on up! Glad to know in advance it would have been a wasted journey. May try my luck tomorrow though.

All I need to know now is a) will the Apple Store in Kingston open early b) is it likely to be as insane as Regents Streets 4k reservations... that'll definitely affect the time I head there to get my reserved iPhone...

micro-sim active straight away...

I picked up a micro-sim from the o2 store in Kingston, London...

Just went to their website to perform the swap. As soon as it said 'finished, now wait for your current sim to die', I rebooted the phone. Had no service. Put new micro-sim in, and it's working. Pretty damn fast!

I got a sms from '1010' saying that 'picture messaging is not yet set-up'... then another saying 'welcome MMS' straight away.

So far so good!

That's right, blame Apple for O2's incompetence.

Tell you what, by your logic, I think it's YOUR fault.

You are to blame for everything.

PS: BP oil spill is a disaster, Apple selling out of iPhone 4 is NOT a disaster.

I'm not blaming Apple, what I'm trying to say is that the mobile phone networks can't seem to get their **** together and I have a feeling on Thursday many people are going to have shiny new iPhones and no way of using their primary feature.

The phone.

I've just phoned my local Apple Store and spoke to someone after 45 minutes on hold!

The woman said that you can sign up for any contract in store. The contracts that you see on the O2 and Vodafone (etc) websites will be available in the Apple Store. The only difference is Apple gives you the choice of which carrier you would like to go for.

So you get the iPhone at the price your particular tariff offers it at.

I asked if a micro-sim comes in the box and she said no but they would be able to order me one? So I sign up for the contract in the Apple Store but unable to use the phone?! Can anyone shed light on this?

Just got my microsim from an O2 store in West London. Went in at 11:30 and they were unpacking some boxes that had just arrived, and didn't know what i meant about collecting a microsim, only that they would be selling them from Thursday. I explained that I'd heard from O2 that i could collect a microsim to swap onto from my current 'full fat' sim, and as i explained she finished opening the box to reveal it was stuffed with new microsims for the iPhone 4.

She read through the documentation and confirmed she could give me one for free if i had official confirmation from Apple of an order. I emailed her a screenshot of my order email from my iPhone and kept with a blue microsim packet with Pay Monthly & Business Customers on it.

Yet to try to swap the number though...

EDIT: the o2 employees at the store said they hadn't been told ANYTHING about the phone, details for getting sims, anything at all until the last couple of days, but even today's microsim delivery was unexpected. They said it felt very rushed on O2s part but that they knew Apple had a thing about total secrecy until the last minute to ramp up expectations. These were their personal views of course, not O2s... ;)

What you are saying may only apply if you are switching to one of the new tariffs and getting a subsidised handset.

If your 18/24 month contract already expired and you switched to an 'old' 30 day simplicity tariff and you buy a sim-free phone direct from Apple, you can swap to a micro-sim and not lose your unlimited data. O2 confirmed this to me at least 4 times.

Yeah even though I reserved I'll be getting there very early! Shame o2 Wimbledon hasn't got theirs, I work behind the Odeon so I think I'll check again at lunch too

Where is the Apple store in Kingston? (in terms of bus/tube/train)

Also, I have been with o2 for ages, but I've never logged into The Cloud or BT Open Zone, where is all the info for this?!

Thanks for the update.

Oh well, that means I'll hang on to my 1st gen iPhone a few weeks longer.
And no iOS4 for me either...

I'm hanging on to my 3G for a few more weeks as well. Quite frankly I don't see the launch going smoothly at all after all the misinformation that has been flying around, and staff from the phone networks not knowing what is going on from one moment to the next. I'd rather play it safe and wait a while knowing that when I do upgrade things will all be working.

SIMs never come in the boxes of phones in my experience, but the Apple Store will have SIMs in store they will give to customers with the phones though.

Yes, but lets get a little perspective here.

This appears to be the biggest launch of any Apple product, almost certainly likely to exceed the original iPhone 2 and iPhone 3G launches.

Everybody appears to want one!

The networks are @sswipes, we all know that. But you cannot blame Apple for the unprecedented demand.

I'm sure they and Steve Jobs is not sitting on his @ss and hoping NOT to do everything he possibly can to get the product out to as many people as possible.

One prediction: the servers for both Apple, O2, other carriers, and even AT&T in the States are going to be in MELTDOWN on Thursday, no doubt about it.

The demand is so huge.

I just picked up 2 micro-sims this morning from O2, and the guys in the store were telling me that nearly every single phonecall, every visitor, and every email is about iPhone at the moment.

They said they are getting tired of it, and people are asking questions that the only answer they can give them is what is on the website.

Anyway, I think we've seen nothing yet, wait for the MELTDOWN on Thursday.

Heatwave on the internet!

/peace

Just passing through Milton Keynes shopping centre and collected a micro sim after a bit of hassle ....... O2 staff appeared to not know about releasing the sims so at first tried the....we haven't got any but then the manager came out with some for around 3 of us in store who were requesting one.......

All sorted too and transfering across to the new sim shortly....woohooo now just need an Iphone4 32GB :)

SIMs never come in the boxes, they will have SIMs in the store they will give to customers with the phones though.

Are you sure about that? I just want this to be painless! Was the girl right about being able to set up contracts in-store and paying the cheaper price for the iPhone (i.e. £189 for the iPhone on a 18month O2 contract at £35 a month) as opposed to paying the Apple price tag of £499?

Sorry if these questions seem basic but there is so much conflicting news about this launch.

I picked mine up from Wimbledon on Saturday. Only one of the guys in the store knew that they had arrived! On Sat they were apparently "under the iPad 3G sims out the back" - I think they were being hidden!

I assume that'll be fine, phone retailers do this all the time without trouble.

When I got my Nokia from Phones4U last year, they gave me the phone for the PAYG price but then got the SIM from under the counter, unpacked the phone, then put the SIM in.

Same with contracts, the SIMs are separate from the phones.

I don't see why Apple would make it less convenient than it is by the standard process.

Just been at the O2 store in wakefield and they didn't have a clue about giving them out. I went outside for a signal, loaded up their twitter feed and went back with what it said.

They came back out with a microsim pack from the back, loaded it all into the computer and I left. Checked it and its a bloomin payg one - can't transfer sims between PAYG and contract.

Just hoping one turns up in the post or I can pick one up from Meadowhall on the day.

Which Kingston store? Bentall Centre or Church Road?
