Locked or not?

Probably a daft question but I've read different things now. I bought the sim free iphone from apple today and didn't enter a contract. My plan is to continue to use my existing o2 simplicity contract.

I was under the impression that when the phone is first connected to itunes or restored to factory default a message is displayed saying the iphone is now unlocked. I don't get this message I simply get the "Iphone is activated" message on the iphone screen.

Is there any other way other than trying a different micro sim that I don't have or cutting down a sim, to work out if the phone is actually unlocked or not?

Im just hoping that it is not locked to o2 now or wether I don't get the message that others are getting because the phone was never locked in the first place.

Need a micro-SIM soon. O2 stores around me recieved about 10, and they've not got any left. Customer Services said that, since they don't sell micro-SIMs, they cannot send me one, and advise me to go to the stores. The only problem now, is that the stores hasn't had a micro-SIM delivery since last week, and as far as the know, they aren't getting them next week or this week.

Help :/

O2 sent me one in the post once I told them I was leaving them because they couldn't give me a sim card that probably costs about 1p to make.

Turned up this morning - Although I already picked one up in London a couple of days back - Where do you live?

Can you not just cut your existing sim down ???

Mine come up with unlocked messages once sync'd with iTunes following activation. Along with please register.

I had the same concern based on previous experiences but the moment you sync for the first time you get a message saying your phone is unlocked even after you download the carrier update.

Hi guys. I think I will be switching to Vodafone from O2, they are cheaper and I have heard that their network is better. I was with Orange for 13 years before I switched to O2 for my iphone 3G in October 2008, so I think I will try Vodafone now.

I have a very busy week at work (I am an A&E doctor) with 12 hour shifts this week and unfortunately I could not get an iphone 4 today. I will have to wait 10 days or so, I think. In the meantime, I have a few questions which I would be grateful if you could help me with:

a) What is this reception issue, and what bumper are you talking about? where can I get one?

b) Setting up my new phone as a new phone, can I then go on and synchronise my contacts, music and calendars from outlook as I am doing with my 3G?

c) In my 3G I am using a screen protector and an incase leather case. Would you advise doing the same with the iphone 4? If so, which one should I go for?

Many, many thanks in advance!

On a side note has anyone got there phone but not been charged for it - I had a phone call earlier from my card issuer telling me they were doing a fraud investigation and they have frozen the card (All sorted now though!)

But there has been no payment taken for this phone - Payment has been taken for a bumper I ordered at the same time though......

A - Reception issue doesn't affect my phone - However its apparently if you cover the black line in the bottom left hand corner of the casing - Plenty of threads about this if you want to have a read and a few videos on you tube as well. Bumpers are available on the apple.com/uk store - Shipping for every colour apart from black is now 16th July. You will see them in the right hand side (New items to store list)

B - Yes.

C - Apparently apple has used some tough glass - however I think its some marketing crap and am going for a zagg shield - Expensive but not as expensive as replacing a phone with a scratched front/back. (I am a bit OCD though when it comes to phones!!!) As for case - Personal choice - I have a Sena ultraslim on order used one on the 3G and it worked fine for almost 2 years. No scratches at all.

anyone think i will be able to get a bumper from an apple shop tomorrow???? or u think they will be all sold out as well??

Some people have said that the iPhone reception fault is just a software bug and you don't actually lose reception at all. This is false though. I just held my phone, watched the reception drop off and tried calling it to no avail.

Alas, this is exactly the kind of problem that would have slipped through hardware testing with Apple since when they were testing it in the wild they always used 3G lookalike cases.

I'm guessing Apple will do one of three things about it:

1) Apple says they'll fix it with a software update and do so.

2) Apple says they'll fix it with a software update but then nothing ever improves and they get away with it while everyone buys cases instead in the mean time. IPhone 4S in 2011 will look the same but won't have this problem.

3) Apple recognises that there's a fault and begins a product recall in a few months with an improved antenna system / outer shell. They'd probably do something where the internals of the phones are identical so that they can reuse everything else in 'reconditioned' iPhones and will then sell those all later on as reconditioned discounted units to recoup some of the massive cost of replacing hundreds of thousands if not millions of iPhones.

Regent Street Friday

I couldn't get there, but a mate of mine qued for a while for a reserved iPhone at Regent Street.

He couldn't wait any longer and left, so didn't get a ticket (which apparently was given to reserved people to come back Friday)

Anyone care to venture a guess as to how bad the line is going to be outside Regent Street tomorrow ?

Sure, an iPhone 2G will suffice, i'll even take £25 off.

-.-

If you had 24 month contract with O2, then got the iPhone 4 on £35/pm..but for some reason don't want/need it, this would be exactly £10 more.

Of course there is hardly anything in it for the seller, but it would make me incredibly happy and I would owe the amazing person my life for eternity etc. etc.

Anyone up to it? :D:D:D

ooh. I'm currently in Oxford, but I'll be in Bournemouth very soon.

Cut the bastard up

Might need a few to try on before I do

Might want some practice, on things I don't have :(

Might give O2 a call, and request them to send one down.

Where can I get this zagg shield from? Desperately in need of a filmy screen protector for front and back (I am OCD with scratching screen). Atm I haven't removed packaging film from the phone and have it in a butt ugly case I picked up from o2 store I was passing. NEED TO GET RID OF THIS MONSTROSITY and enjoy my phone more!

So what you are saying is that the iPhones from Apple Stores always remain unlocked? That you can, in theory, swap SIMs from different networks every now and then and they will all work after they have been activated in iTunes?

After queuing up from 4pm to 10pm (6 hrs) at Regent St London with a reservation, i finally got my iphone 4.

Met a few macrumors members in line so time flew fast.

When it was 6pm staff started handing out 'come back tomorrow cards' but i chanced it and waited

Funny thing is once i got served it only took 15 mins for the purchase (sim free 32 gig)

were there so many on the shelves? :D

Wow, reading some of the stories on the forums tonight I feel incredibly lucky really. Turned up to the Touchwood centre at about 12, stood in the reservations queue for about 5 minutes when one of the employees came along and confirmed my reservation. Then about another 5 minutes later the same guy comes back, asks whether I'm sim-free or contract. I bought sim-free, so he pulls me out of the line and I'm done within 15 minutes.

But to be honest the queue wasn't really bad at all. I think even if I was on contract I'd only be queueing for about an hour or so even in the non-reservations line.

Contract and SIM-only comparisons

The woman then got her calculator out and worked out that over 2 years it would be cheaper for me to buy the phone full price from Apple and just get a simplicity contract from O2. This would also enable me to leave after 12 months if I wanted.

Yes, you can definitely do it cheaper if you're prepared to at least take out a 12-month sim-only deal and the bundled minutes work for you (the same is true on Vodafone and Orange too, by my calculations.) I don't think the subsidised deals can be beaten with 30-day rolling contracts though.

(I suspect the networks have some carefully prepared models for making sure that they get the handset prices "just right", and they're paying wholesale costs for the handset too.)
