So what you are saying is that the iPhones from Apple Stores always remain unlocked? That you can, in theory, swap SIMs from different networks every now and then and they will all work after they have been activated in iTunes?

That's the impression I got (I haven't tested it but the unlock message convinced me). Plus other members on this thread have said so (its been discussed before). So good news all round. ;)

Ended up picking up my reserved 16gb sim free at the Apple Bluewater store.

As soon as I joined I was advised I wouldnt be served as the queue was cut off ten people or so in front. Many people joined behind but left shortly after. Luckily was the penultimate person to be let in this evening.

Once in store things went smoothly and everyone seemed to be quite calm.

I just wish there was two lines for reserved - one new/upgrade connections and the other for sim free.

Total wait time approx 2hours

Wow, reading some of the stories on the forums tonight I feel incredibly lucky really. Turned up to the Touchwood centre at about 12, stood in the reservations queue for about 5 minutes when one of the employees came along and confirmed my reservation. Then about another 5 minutes later the same guy comes back, asks whether I'm sim-free or contract. I bought sim-free, so he pulls me out of the line and I'm done within 15 minutes.

But to be honest the queue wasn't really bad at all. I think even if I was on contract I'd only be queueing for about an hour or so even in the non-reservations line.

Lucky for some, I ended up queuing for 10 hours in Cardiff only to find out they didn't have any 16GB ones left, so had to fork out extra for a 32GB.

unlocked iPhones

I bought the sim-free iPhone today, does that mean its unlocked at all times, or now I'm on o2, is it just locked to that network?

When you first plugged in, and activated it with iTunes, it should have said "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked."
(something like this- that one was screen-grabbed from an earlier iTunes version and iPhone but my iPhone 4 activation displayed a similar message after inserting an O2 microSIM that I had previously "swapped" my, now 30-day SIMplicity tariff, SIM to.)

This is a thing that Apple control, although if it's initially a handset locked to the carrier then the approval for unlock comes from the carrier.

Basically, if you paid the full £499 or £599 then it should be an unlocked iPhone. If you didn't pay that then expect it to be "network-locked."

Others have asked about whether they can swap in another SIM and re-activate. Last time I tested this, with an officially unlocked iPhone 3G, you didn't need to go through the activation with iTunes again if you were simply swapping the SIM for another.

Left the Apple Store somewhere between 12:30 & 12:45, switching from £35 a month to £45 a month and used early upgrade. Tried SimSwap website but said there's an error with my sim number (probs cause Apple Store put all the sim info into their/O2s system!)

Haven't been activated yet, think I might be waiting a lil while!

My 3GS still active at the moment!

Is that ok?

Well i have to say that i am eternally jealous of you people who got the iphone today as i will have to wait another month :(

So hope you all enjoy your phones and people who have to wait a day or two then please just think of me and i HOPE the wait will be worth it.

hmmm. I didn't see the congratulations message though my machine lost internet just as it was connecting to itunes for the first time meaning that I had to restart.

I've tried doing a restore to factory settings but I don't get the unlocked message now. On my original Iphone 3G every time I did a factory restore I would get the message that it had been unlocked by o2, I was kinda expecting the same again.

If I don't put a sim card in I get a message asking me to put a valid sim card into the iphone.. this is different to the message I used to get on my old 3G phone whilst it was locked.. the old message was "insert an unlocked and valid sim to activate". The new message says "insert a valid sim to activate" or something alongs those lines.. i'm guessing therefore it is unlocked but the message has been changed.

I'm getting the reception problem, but mines a bit of a variation. Don't know if anyone in the UK has this..? I'm on O2 and live in a big city which gets reliable coverage.

My main problem isn't with dropped calls but with data signals. When I hold the phone the 'wrong' way, my bars drop to 1 and stay there until I move my hand. I never fully lose my signal though. What happens when I make a call is that my signal actually seems to boost, even if I am holding it by the sides.

The main problem for me is data, I hold the phone for just a second and as the bars plummet, the 3G signal disappears. This makes it impossible to use Maps without any inconvenience and today I was trying to stream a world cup game on my phone while I was on the bus. I have done this on my bus ride home almost every day for the past week on my 3G with very few problems with the stream cutting out. Basically it was pretty much impossible to get a 3g signal while holding the iphone 4 and streaming video was a non starter.

I might pick a bumper up tomorrow, stock permitting, but I don't know if it will provide a fix for my problem because most people seem to be having issues with phone signal more so than data.

Another issue is the GPS, which funnily enough will put me anywhere within a square mile of my actual location, and constantly jumping from one place to another. This only seems to be an issue when I don't have a wireless signal but I can't see how that would be connected.

I think a genius bar appointment might be in order for this weekend. These issues are a real shame because despite it all, I love the new iPhone, (the display, the HD camera, the aesthetic etc) it just needs to actually be fit for purpose.

Finally managed to set up my iPhone... it's looking great... can't spot any yellow on the screen, but haven't had a chance to check it against a white background. I am however getting the signal issue... if i hold the phone with the left corner in my palm and by hand/thumb running along the left side of the phone covering the volume keys it will go from full strength to 2 bars... i rarely hold the phone like this so it shouldn't be a problem and it doesn't seem to happen every time I try. It doesn't go to 'no signal' for now. I decided to get a bumper today after a visit to the cardiff apple store - still had a handful of people waiting to get their reserved phones at 7:30pm. Overpriced, yes, but couldn't resist.

Hey everyone, hope you're all enjoying your new iPhones as much as I am!

Wanted to get some opinions on conserving battery life? Is anyone taking any measures to save some juice? I've turned off 'location services' for some apps, turned off the 'request to join (wifi) networks' I'm probably gonna keep push email on as I like getting my emails straightaway. Am considering turning 3G off and turning it on when I need it.

What are your thoughts on this?

Hey guys,

If theres anyone still looking for an iPhone 4, I've decided to sell one of the sim free 32GB's I bought today.

Preferably offers from people in Cardiff would be good, but I guess I could post it too. Just PM me if your interested.

Thanks.

I found a fix to the reception problem.

iPhone4Fix2.jpg

I did it as a joke but it actually seems to work. Instead of my reception dropping down from four bars to zero and losing signal entirely, it drops down to two bars and stays there.

Needless to say, I'm *not* going to utilise this solution. :p

Arrived at Lakeside Apple Store at about 5:30pm with my reservation, and was out of the store by 6pm with my new phone. It's still not activated with O2 though, and I'm a new customer. Should I leave it connected to itunes overnight or something?

Lakeside apple had plenty of bumpers in stock btw, only black though.

I had the same problem with sim registration when i got home from O2 store. When i put the new micro sim into my iPhone4 an synced via itunes i was left wondering what to do next as the o2 website wouldn't accept my new sim. i got through to O2 c/s and was informed that when the O2 shop entered my new sim details on their system it automatically began the process.

i just waited 30mins and it came into life

Anyone else considering returning their phones? i am especially after reading Steve's response.

14 hours for me and nothing......

My phone was direct from Apple, and I did the online sim swap myself on the O2 site. I'm not a parient guy at the best of times, and this is driving me nuts.

Just about to head to work, and the guys are all going to want to see the new phone. I can just imagine it now, "What do you mean it's not working, ha ha ha ha!!"

:(

anyone know if O2's swap my sim is an automated system or manual? Just i did it at about 4.30pm yesterday its now 6.26am the next day and my sim still isn't swapped :(

Mine was sim free from Apple.. I trimmed down my 3 sim to size, and it activated immediately, so something to do with O2 I guess? :(
