Actually ordering my phone now

The call has been sheer confusion and chaos; I think the girl's new. Now waiting for her to chase a 'referred' payment, on the second set of valid card details I provided. Frustrating

48mins and counting

So much for Tesco phoning or e-mailing those who registered when they were available. Unless they plan on calling us to tell us they've sold out in a couple of days.

If it wasn't for the 12 month contract, I wouldn't be touching Tesco with a barge pole based on folks experiences over the past 24 hours. In fact, I think I might just give them a swerve ...

Would really appreciate your expert opinions.

Just picked up a sim-free iPhone 4, and wondering if which carrier/plan you folks would recommend here in the UK? I'm most interested in data ... not to concerned with minutes.

3 looks like it has a pretty affordable plan. Are they any good? A couple of the employees at the Apple store recommended O2.

What should I do? Any advice would be tremendously appreciated.

This (credit referral) happened to me yesterday instore as my billing address on my CC didn't match the one I gave. Took hours to sort out, in the meantime they gave the 32gig that was supposed to be for me to the next person in the line.

The key thing is coverage where you live and work. Just because one network has better coverage for your area doesn't mean this will be the case in your house or office. If coverage is not an issue, then 3 probably have the best data plans, but word is that their customer service is a complete nightmare.

Just ordered the 16GB through Tesco on the £20 contract. Took ages to pass the engaged tone (and about another 40 mins in the queue)!

Delivers tomorrow! :)

Guys, quick question. Anyone found any good sites to use for screen protectors and cases in the UK? Quite tempted to buy from America, but would rather not pay shipping charges etc.

Cheers :)

Locked or not?

Probably a daft question but I've read different things now. I bought the sim free iphone from apple today and didn't enter a contract. My plan is to continue to use my existing o2 simplicity contract.

I was under the impression that when the phone is first connected to itunes or restored to factory default a message is displayed saying the iphone is now unlocked. I don't get this message I simply get the "Iphone is activated" message on the iphone screen.

Is there any other way other than trying a different micro sim that I don't have or cutting down a sim, to work out if the phone is actually unlocked or not?

Im just hoping that it is not locked to o2 now or wether I don't get the message that others are getting because the phone was never locked in the first place.

I had the same concern based on previous experiences but the moment you sync for the first time you get a message saying your phone is unlocked even after you download the carrier update.

When you first plugged in, and activated it with iTunes, it should have said "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked."
(something like this- that one was screen-grabbed from an earlier iTunes version and iPhone but my iPhone 4 activation displayed a similar message after inserting an O2 microSIM that I had previously "swapped" my, now 30-day SIMplicity tariff, SIM to.)

This is a thing that Apple control, although if it's initially a handset locked to the carrier then the approval for unlock comes from the carrier.

Basically, if you paid the full £499 or £599 then it should be an unlocked iPhone. If you didn't pay that then expect it to be "network-locked."

Others have asked about whether they can swap in another SIM and re-activate. Last time I tested this, with an officially unlocked iPhone 3G, you didn't need to go through the activation with iTunes again if you were simply swapping the SIM for another.

I bought mine SIM-Free (£599) and the Genius in the Apple store activated it on one of their MBPs. The SIM in it at the time was an O2 MicroSIM (for transfering my 30day simplicity onto) which had not been transferred yet - it had only just been taken out the envelope. The iTunes acivation only said that the phone was now activated - no mention of being unlocked.

At home I've synced it with iTunes a few times, and still no mention of it being unlocked. It has downloaded a carrier update. The MicroSIM has now been activated (and my old SIM de-activated) and the iPhone 4 synced since, and still no mention of it being unlocked. I have not seen this screen http://www.gbnet.net/~jrg/pics/unlock.png :(

I think I might go get an Orange/Voda/3 PAYG MicroSIM and give it a try in mine!

You won't get the UNLOCKED message because the phone hasn't been locked in the first place; how can you unlock something that isn't locked? Mine works fine with both my proper O2 SIM and a cut-down T-Mobile one.

When I put my Sim Free iPhone received from Apple on-line yesterday, and plugged it into my iTunes on my iMac - It said "Phone Unlocked" on iTunes and "Phone Activated" on the iPhone - then i went through a wizard on iTunes to register my phone under my MobileMe account.

Woo-hoo! Just got into the Tesco's queue on 0800 433 4994!

What's the betting either my phone battery runs out or I accidentally cut them off when they finally answer?

Oh great, just realised I could do with a trip to the loo...

Spoke too soon!

Got through after about 10 minutes in the queue and..

TESCO'S SYSTEMS HAVE ALL GONE DOWN AGAIN!!!

FFS! She said try again in a few hours time. Great!

Anyone else considering returning their phones? i am especially after reading Steve's response.

I'm not. If it becomes evident it is indeed a massive design flaw, then there will be a recall I'm sure. I've not noticed the yellow screen and yes my signal does drop from 5 bars to 2 bars if I cup the the bottom left corner with my hand, but I rarely hold the phone like that. I have bought a bumper and it does resolve the issue should I wish to hold the phone in that particular corner.

Overall I'm happy with the iPhone 4.

I rang 0800 433 4994

I've not had a confirmation email, but I logged into the tesco account online, and I can see my imei and phone number, so am confident there's been a phone allocated

Just calling to see what my delivery details are, and the guy tells em that my order's been cancelled because of something security wise. FFS!

Tesco Mobile in store

been following this thread for days now. Will update on my situation.
Tried as most did to get tesco mobile via phone. No joy so went to Lea Valley store yesterday. They had the phones but no sim cards so I reserved one. they said they would call when the sims arrived. Never heard back. Tried calling yesterday but no joy. Called this morning and the ysaid come in and get it as they are there. Went in store, sat down and filled everything out, they activated my phone and #I was on my way home in 15 mins.
Not the best process but once in there all was very easy...am one happy chappy.
They said the store got 23 phones and they all were reserved in hours...
I was expecting carrier to say Tesco, but it shows as O2-UK...
What an amazing phone.
