No.

I am currently not considering getting an iPhone 4 at this point. I have two decent phones [sig], which have a great HSPDA signal where ever I usually go.

Coverage is important; I never had a problem with O2 in any of the areas that I frequent, so I don't see what the problem is.

I think a bigger problem with this phone is that this expensive phone loses signal no matter what network you're on, if you hold it in your left hand!

I was replying to you because I found your "it's on the O2 network" as a catch comment, rather unhelpful and pointless. What do you mean? O2 have data trouble? O2 have coverage trouble? Both were fine when I was with them.

I've had no problem making calls holding the phone in either hand. So I can't see why everyone is moaning.

I'm also on O2 and the coverage around these parts is fairly patchy...

As you can see, everything has a flip side...

Just trying to get through to tesco mobile now. I'm on O2 but the tesco mobile plans are SO much better aren't they! I know tesco mobile uses o2's network, but does anybody know if it's actually any WORSE than o2 for reception/coverage?

I ask just because i'm wondering whether o2 would get priority over the network seeing as tesco mobile 'borrow' o2's network? If anyone's on tesco mobile, how does it compare to other networks?

On the other hand, would it be a better idea to go with Three? Their plans look a lot more impressive than o2's and I saw a post on this forum saying three were the best for 3G reception and o2 were the worst! Is this true? ...And what would be the downside to going with Three? ...again, anyone on Three, any help would be appreciated!

From being with tesco for two days I can say that the signal is identical to O2 and GPRS and 3G speed is identical, from what I've seen. The whole network seems very rudamentary otherwise :p the online system is so basic and theres no visual voicemail, I know you get 1gig of data but I'm actually a bit worried about what would happen should I exceed that, i wouldn't be suprised if I was charged £4/mb like the pay and go price, just because of how simple the network seems to be, I think tbh tesco is very people orientated, they dnt have a fancy website etc. but they've got great value tarrifs and when you get to speak to someone on the phone you get all your questions answered.
Also I've got a theory that it only says O2-UK instead of tesco for the very reason that people didn't want their iPhone to say tesco in the corner, as other phones on tesco mobile do say tesco on the network display ;)

People tend to generalise on mobile coverage by specific telcos. But I've noticed that some spots have problems with certain networks and not with others. And then there are spots - even in London - where ALL networks have p*** poor coverage.

So yes you're right - no use generalising

Ok .. just got off the phone with them. I have three numbers that I have been trying in succession! (0800 433 4994; 0845 300 6660 and 0800 001 4150) I got through on the 0845 number just now.

Anyways, the guy said that they did have phones but now they have run out! He had no clue on stock availability and referred me to the 0800 001 4150 number as the people who will know!

This is a mess but, for now, I'm sticking with the idea of Tesco - partly due to pricing and partly because I figure if it takes a few days the 'fix' (however they plan to do it) for the signal issues will be in place.

Would be interested on any further 'Tesco info' tho from people who manage to get through to them today.

Loopy

I have just rang the 0845 number and it is technical support, they told me that the iphone 4 sold out yesterday, when I asked how when the system has been down for the last two days? She said that she was talking about the tesco stores and not tesco direct which she has no connection to.

From what I gather, the number to buy an iphone 4 on the tesco website is for tesco direct, that is the only number that will get through to them, and they seem to be the only people in the country that have an iphone until mid July.

Do tesco have tethering?

Also, I read that visual voicemail is coming to tesco but they can't say when.

Also, sorry for spamming the thread with 3 posts in a row...

hmmm I hope that means I'll be getting mine soon aswell....

Good luck! I got a text telling me that my order had shipped with a tracking number. The order reference the guy on the phone gave me wasn't recognized by the orange order status tracker so I was a bit worried but I guess it was all fine. Did you order online or over the phone?

Sorry if I've missed this but has anyone confirmed that when you buy a sim-free iPhone 4 from Apple that they lock to the network when you put your sim in?

If that is the case, I could just buy a pay and go one from o2 for cheaper (when they sell them) and put my contract sim in it?

I have one from the Apple store, when you first plug it in to iTune it says your phone is unlocked.

I can second that. I've now had 2 iphone 4's bought from Tesco Extras for a couple of days and there is no difference whatsover to being on O2..apart from the tarrifs.

Ref the 1GB limit this is twice what O2 are offering and the guy in the shop stated that this limit would not really be enforced.

Not sure on tethering though.

As for availability The store called Northampton South (between j15 and 15a on the M1) had a second delivery yesterday and had loads in stock.

All in all I'm very pleased with my move.

Well, I doubt they're all lying. Maybe yours has better signal strength than theres - but for it to make the news, it's more than just one person.

Also, Apple are now giving out free bumpers at Regent St. I am sure that they knew about this but deemed it too late. I wondered what these 'bumpers' were. Now we know.

Okay, that's good to know it's now worse than o2! I do use o2's website quite a lot to check my balance and pay my bills manually, so that would be missed if i went to tesco, but i'm sure tesco will only improve seeing as so many people are going to them for the iPhone 4. Fingers crossed they get visual voicemail eventually!

Concerning data usage on my iPhone 3GS, I rang O2 and they said since october last year I've only once ever used more than 200MB in a month so a GB should be plenty enough, and I used my iPhone for plenty of stuff like checking twitter and facebook, googling things in safari, using the maps app, watching youtube clips etc...

I noticed that photos were looking a bit bleached out on my iPhone today, turned it round to find that the camera and flash bits are full of condensation. I haven't spilt anything on it and this seems to have happened overnight whilst charging. It was really darned humid last night but UK humid, not Brazil humid so I don't know what's happened. Never had this with my 2G, 3G or 3GS before. I've left it out in the sun for a bake to try to get rid of it because I doubt Apple would believe me if I say I didn't spill anything on it - honestly I didn't.

Re: tethering - Tesco hasn't offered it in the past. It might in the future, but I wouldn't bank on it (imo)

re: VV - again, hasn't been offered previously and the company hasn't said anything about it coming (as far as I know!).

No, they don't lock it - and if they did, it would kinda ruin the point of paying extra for an unlocked model.

Nah they don't have tethering, but I think you can get that minihack where u can make your phone do tethering without paying extra for it, dunno if you can still do that though,
yeah I read that too but I doubt it, if they wanted it they could've had it, it's the O2 infrastructure they're on, I wouldn't be suprised if part of the O2-Tesco contract was to allow O2 to remain with the Visual Voicemail exclusivety.

Of course they bloody don't, it wouldn't be a sim free unlocked phone otherwise.

I ordered from Orange over the phone and was also pretty nervous when the order tracker wouldn't recognise my number... But i guess the online tracker must only work for website orders?? I hope i get mine soon...

But say you put an o2 sim in it, does it then lock to o2 or can you put other network sims in it after?

Just put a 3 iPad microsim in it and it found the 3 network, no messages about it being locked. This is the first time I have tried a sim from another network after activating with a VF one.

a) it's in warranty

b) they should be able to tell if it's had water spilt on it.

Unbelieveable! After two and a half days of constantly calling Tesco Mobile to be told that their system is down, they've now apparently ran out of stock despite the fact that, according to them, it's only been on sale for 8 minutes

Thanks. Going to wait for a white sim-free then.

I sent them an email of complaint yesterday, because of the way the calls were being queued/not queued and the instability of their systems infrastructure and got this back at 9:48am (26 June 2010 09:48) this morning:

"Thank you for emailing support@tescomobile.com

Regrettably due to the high demand for the iPhone 4 our sales lines have been extremely busy. I am very sorry you were unable to place an order once you got through to the sales team.

Unfortunately we are currently out of stock of the iPhone 4, however you can register your interest in the iPhone 4 at http://www.tescodirect.com/p/inc/specials/iphone/ and we will email you when further stock becomes available.

You can also contact your local Tesco Phone Shop who will be able to advise you on their current stock levels. Please click on the link below to locate the nearest Phone Shop to you.

http://www.tesco.com/storeLocator/

Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

If there is anything further I can assist you with, please do not hesitate to contact me."

So they had sold out 12minutes before they said they'd be taking ANY phone orders anyway!

Luckily, thanks to an amazing person at O2 Maidstone, I managed to get one this morning!
