to finish me off was the lack of any call forwarding and call holding (obviously no visual voicemail either).
You can have visual voicemail on any pay-monthly network by downloading HulloMail from the AppStore. You get the voicemail in your email too, if you enable the option. HulloMail takes over your voicemail, so missed calls are diverted to HulloMail rather than O2 voicemail.

Recommended, especially if your carrier doesn't do Visual Voicemail. I use O2 so do get it but still prefer HulloMail.

Not if you are with Tesco - as they don't have call forwarding which is needed for HulloMail to work. But yes any normal pay monthly network should have this feature enabled.

Bumper update

Thought I'd post an update on the Black and Orange bumpers I got from Apple.
Both fit perfectly well, and DO NOT mark the phone at all. I was using the Black for work and the Orange for the rest of the time, however, I've just returned from a weekend in Barcelona, with the Orange on permanently, and it has discoloured a little on the (rubber) corners. This is obviously due to the constant handling (in and out of pockets, sweaty hands etc). Not a biggie (especially as I'm due for a refund on both), but If I find anything that safely gets it off, I'll report back.

I just phoned Orange and they said that they take no part in allowing you to unlock the phone, either after 12 months or after the 24 month contract is over. They said you have to do it via a 3rd party and that would void the warranty, but that they would not send you an unlock code at any time, meaning that if you left Orange after the contract, the iPhone would be useless. That doesn't seem right, I thought the network was OBLIGED to let you unlock it after X period of time?

After being with T-Mobile, on a contract, that was my main reason for biting the bullet, and going for a sim-only contract, after buying it unlocked from Apple.
I know if you're on a contract O2 will unlock it for you, but none of the others do (unless I've missed some small print somewhere).

Unfortunately, they're not obliged. Their code of conduct is merely advisory rather than obligatory. Probably best to only deal with carriers that adhere to the code, if at all possible. O2 are probably the best as they publicise their policy. Vodafone aren't as good as their policy needs digging-out and they'll only unlock your iPhone if you bought it SIM free.

Hmm, since speaking to the guy who said they wouldn't unlock initially I have:

1. Gone on Orange's FAQs and found two articles that say you CAN have any phone unlocked on Orange (minimum 3 months of contract):

http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/selfservice/forwardrendererurl.jsp?DocId=478935

http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/selfservice/forwardrendererurl.jsp?DocId=474187

2. Phoned someone else at Orange Customer Service who told me that the website is right.

Hmm..

EDIT: Also, for all of you guys still waiting to buy iPhones, if you're considering Orange, they are in stock and can deliver as soon as tomorrow if you order today. Online of course.

:D :D :D :D :D :D

Already put the BSE on the back, which was a piece of cake, now to go into Vodafone and get my Micro SIM so i can activate it.

So excited :D

I can confirm that there is definately a shortage of iPhone 4 in the UK.

If you read through my other post in the "Priority List" thread, you can see that I had registered my interest one day after the launch.

Since then, I have not received any further emails.

I've registered at White City, Regents Park, and Birmingham Bull Ring.

I've also bought one from the Apple store on the 7th of July. Hopefully I'll be able to collect from store. Which ever comes first, I'll cancel the other. :(

Wait white city has a retail apple store?
I could only find 2 on google near the city.
Regent and Westfield.

I'm a dumbntourist is tw white city one an actual apple retail store or a 3rd party reseller of some sort?
I need a proper store for the international warranty as well as the vat refund forms

I've been on the Regent Street waiting list since 3 July. They told me today there are about 1,800 people in front of me.

Oh god I had no idea that the line was that long! Between all the other retail stores and the telcos getting theirs, it'll be a long wait :(

Westfield (shopping centre) is in or near White City so they're the same thing.

I am currently an O2 customer on a Simplicity plan.

O2 are able to get me a 32GB iPhone 4 by Friday.
Vodafone said it'll be about 7 days.

CPW website says Orange and Vodafone available this week for delivery. O2 next week. Slightly conflicting information...

Oh so there is only 2 conveniently close to London itself?
I don't want to travel out somewhere for a long time just for a phone I might miss when I go home :) I have an entire city to explore here.

If you buy your phone sim-free, it will remain unlocked, whoever you choose as your carrier.

I am also currently on a Simplicity iPhone £20 per month plan...

Were they able to get you an iPhone by Friday ON the simplicity plan, or was that signing a new contract with them (18-24 month)?

Ideally I would like an iPhone 4 on my current rolling Simplicity plan and I was just wondering if they are offering to buy the handset through them etc... (Otherwise it's back to thinking about Tesco or buying outright from Apple). Thanks!

That was on an 18 month £35 tariff. I don't think O2 currently do handset only / PAYG tariffs on the iPhone 4.

Tesco, from other threads I've read, sound a bit pants - although they are cheap!

30-day return period?

Hello,

What happens when you wish to return your faulty iPhone for an exchange and the iPhone is out of stock?

Thanks,

Shawn

Hello there.

I was emailed yesterday by Apple letting me know my iPhone was ready to collect from the Apple Store. I'm going tonight, but I have a couple of stupid questions first.

1 - Are all iPhones reserved on the priority list SIM-free and unlocked?
2 - Does payment have to be made by the name on the reservation - it's being bought for me, but I'll be there, as well as the cardholder.

Thanks.

Any idea what the availability from Apple online is?

If I order now, would I be right in assuming it would possibly take a month before I get it? (as the website says shipping in 3 weeks, and judging from a lot of you guys, it takes about a week to get shipped to the uk).

Also, do they take the money right away or when it is actually shipped?

And last question. I am currently on a contract with Orange. If I cut down my sim card to fit the iphone 4, how does the iTunes activation go? (and would orange give me a microSIM so I don't have to cut my one down?).

So after being told by O2 that they could get me a phone this week, I just called back to confirm and now they have none at all. None in their retail shops, none for online / telephone orders.

I've just had to do this.

I have been told that once I have returned the phone to Apple they will send me a new one within 5 days. I would imagine that this means they have a separate stock of iP4's specifically for faults/exchanges and that these have nothing to do with the phones that are on sale.

You might also like to know that I was told not to return my box or any accessories in the prepaid packaging that they are sending me. I asked him to confirm a couple of times and he said that all they needed was the phone, and that I would literally be receiving only a new iPhone, no box, manuals or accessories.

Hope that helps!
