If you're going to pay for the phone for PAYG why not just buy it from Apple, and then it will be unlocked. I got my 32GB from Apple and have on 30 day rolling contract, and I'm now going to buy a 16GB for my wife, and go to the store and get a PAYG account.
Have no fear my friend we are in the same boat...

Because you don't get a year's free mobile data buying it from Apple. If your main usage of the iPhone is going to be data and not calls a PAYG one can make more sense. Obviously one downside is you're officially locked in to the carrier for a year too, unless they'll unlock within the first year and not penalise you by removing the PAYG incentives.
Tesco have iphone 4's in stock right now, check their site no longer says currently out of stock
Does anyone know if Tesco or Vodafone allow tethering with out paying for a bolt on?
I got my iPhone 4 from Apple last week, and a PAYG SIM from my local Orange shop - cost me £15 for the SIM. I've also transferred over my number from another provider. I've gone with the Dolphin tariff, and my allowance is:I also enquired in the Orange shop, and again, the fact that their deal also included phone purchase was also very well hidden.
You would be better off buying it sim free and getting a giffgaff sim. Topping up £10 a month gets you 100mins,100texts & unlimited data. You are quite right ..... I found that out when I went in to the store, and made enquiries, and the matter of the data add-on came to light, when going for just the PAYG deal, without the phone purchase. I also enquired in the Orange shop, and again, the fact that their deal also included phone purchase was also very well hidden. So the O2 deal starts to look a lot more interesting (£10 top-up and you get 500mb per month, there is no phone purchase involved). Maybe being locked to VF for a year wouldn't be so bad, to get a slightly better deal.
As a last resort we could also simply go for another VF sim-only deal (like I have). It was also very interesting how information varies, depending who you speak to .... 1) The VF customer service rep told me I could simply sign up in a store. 2) The first Vodafone shop in Leeds I went to said they had no idea how PAYG was going to work 3) The second Vodafone shop (which is around 50 yards away) had full details of the tariffs, and made it perfectly clear how it would work.
Anyone know how the status is in Glasgow? Is there still a long waiting list?

Now I can't say it's been painless. The guy in the shop topped up my SIM by £10, then removed it, then topped it up by £5. He then basically told me to ring Orange to get everything else set up and washed his hands of me. (He initially denied they had SIMs, but another employee told me previously they had "loads" and I had to be persistent. He found me "the last one in the shop".)
- 250MB pm free internet and 750MB pm free WiFi for 12 months, as long as my account is in credit. (just for getting the SIM)
- An additional 100MB pm internet plus 300 free texts if I top up £10 each month (Dolphin)
- A BOGOF £10 credit for the first three months when I top up by £10, just for transferring over my number. (according to the agent in the number transferals department)
Anyway, the £5 top up caused problems as I needed a minimum £10 to trigger the Dolphin rewards, and for two days I was paying for internet access at £4/MB!! (international rates).
Orange has refunded the credit lost on incorrectly charged data. Everything now appears to be ok, but I don't appear to have got my BOGOF £10, so I feel yet another call to customer services coming on.
Just a note on Orange customer services - they have all been very polite and helpful, ringing me back when they said they would and some going above and beyond and giving me their ID number so I could speak to the same person again. However, you do need to know what you're talking about, as they don't always know themselves if it's not the area of their knowledge.
Do your own research on their terms and conditions on the web etc. Keep a record of the names and IDs of the people you speak to, because if someone tells you something (like you are entitled to free credit), someone else will deny it and ask you who told you that. One agent in India tried to tell me that my internet allowance only let me access the web through Orangeworld and if I wanted to use my apps I had to pay separately for using them.![]()
I went with Orange because they allegedly have the best coverage around and about the town where I live. Although it's been a bit of a saga with CS, I've not regretted it yet, I've encountered worse CS!! A weakness with Orange is that their agents all seem to specialise in a particular area (which is good so they should know what they are talking about) but they are scattered to the four corners of the earth so they don't necessarily co-ordinate very well, eg their PAYG account team are in India, but not in the same location as the iPhone team, who I never managed to speak to so I don't know where they are, but not the same location as the support folk in the UK!

At the moment they are offering the same for £5 per month
Well, on August 23rd I will enter my final month of my free data and WiFi bolt-on with O2, which I got when I bought my iPhone 3G in September 09 and carried over onto my iPhone 4 in July 10.
So now I need to decide what I do going forward. I don't want a contract, but having bought the iPhone 4 direct from Apple, I'm unlocked and free to choose my next move.
I can either:
a) Stay on my current tariff, O2 Unlimited, and continue topping up £15 per month for free O2 to O2 calls and texts, but add the 500mb Web and Unlimited WiFi bolt-on for £10 a month, which deducts from your top up. So basically I'd top up £15 for free O2 to O2 calls & texts and 500mb of 3G data per month ... and have £5 top up left from my £15 to call non-O2 numbers (of which I have two in my contacts).
b)Go onto Simplicity for the iPhone with O2.
c) Look at a SIM free tariff from the likes of Orange.
Any PAYG users know of any good tariffs going just now?
That's my approach too. It's cheaper and gives you total flexibility.
i definitely want it to be on pay as you go straight away, if you pay that and then pay for a simplicity contract, the total cost over 18months or 24months is less than signing a contract for it and you can easily switch carriers if you want.
Friends, do you know if the warranty of an ip4 bought in London will be efective outside the UK?? Thanks
I finally succeeded in badgering Three to remove the stupid content filter.
Very happy with the service now.
The free tethering is a welcome bonus, and by running iTether on my iPad, I can now get a really fast connection on that too.
