this is EXACTLY what i plan to do... i'm currently on simplicity for iphone (600 mins/1200 texts / unlimited data for £20pm)

i wasam going to just buy the payg iPhone 4, cut my current sim and off I go.. i can't see that they can stop you doing that... and it's certainly not a limitation of the iPhone 4 to have "unlimited data"...

More BS from O2 CS (great strapline!! lol)

I spoke to like three different people at O2 yesterday. It's definitley clear that they don't really know what they're talking about but basically everyone I spoke to seemed adamant that you couldn't use an unlimited data SIM in the new iPhone. "Unlimited data isn't compatible with the new iPhone" was the first, slightly retarded reply I got. I asked how a tarrif can "not be compatible with a phone" but she couldn't explain. I said I want to keep my existing SIM, tarrif and contract and it shouldn't matter what phone I decide to put it in. Bottom line is yesterday they were sticking to the story that I can't keep my current tarrif with the new iPhone but this is at odds with what I've seen on this forum.

Surely I can just buy the new one on PAYG, plug it into iTunes, register it with an old PAYG SIM card and then cut my exsiting one down to size and stick that in? I wouldn't imagine that the phone would recognise it's on an old contract and suddenly limit my data????

Any thoughts?

Are screen protectors still needed for this model? It doesn't really sound like it based on the tough glass but wanted other opinions.

Good question. To an extent it probably depends on your use.

I find the 3GS screen scratch resistent but I am careful. If you stick it in a pocket with keys and coins it will scratch.

The new screen (and back) is made of even more resilient material so hopefully screen protectors and skins will be a thing of the past.

Apple said:
Advancements in the glass. And under it.
Made from the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed trains, the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.

Not sure about the stainless steel surround though.

MODS:

It doesn't matter if you keep your existing contract - from October EVERYONE will revert to capped data. O2 have said that the free unlimited data was always a promotional offer, as reflected in their T&Cs.

In other words, after October NO-ONE on O2 is going to have unlimited data. Even if you stick with your current iPhone, you're still going to lose it.

Thats not true.

Those customers who have current contracts will continue to have the same contract until they decide to leave O2. e.g Those on 3GS contracts from launch last year. They will continue to have unlimited internet all the way until December/January when either, they will quit their contract, or take out a new contract.

If O2 were going to change those 3GS owners contract from 1st October to have 500mb of data, then O2 are in breach of the original contract and therefore those 3GS owners can break out of their contract early.

Hmm... I've just looked at 'MyO2' and checked out the details of my simplicity tariff.

The Unlimited data that i currently enjoy is a bolt-on. It is currently active without an end date but, I'm sure O2 will change that my October, despite what the advisor said on the phone last night!

So I would say that the post above with the FAQs is pretty accurate. So annoying that O2 are being so misleading, (or just clueless). This thread has SO many conflicting messages.

Hmm... you would think that they wouldn't be able to block your SIM from working with a Pay and Go phone.. but I actually wouldn't put it past them with the whole iTunes registering stuff... I think the best thing to do is to wait a couple of weeks after launch before we do anything... as much as it pains me to have to wait longer!

I notice that although they show an option for PAYG iPhones on the O2 website, it doesn't say you can use it with your existing contract.

I guess they could refuse to send micro-sims out to current unlimited data customers or at least not transfer your number to the new sim.

However, the fact that they're already offering to send a new micro sim to existing customers rules this out.

Absolutely. That's what I understand too. If O2 remove my unlimited data from October, I will cease my contract early due to them amending it to my detriment.

Haha, nice. Pretty much sums it up. Sounds like from the above post though that they're going to cap everyone come October. I called to ask about this earlier this morning and she didn't really know anything but said she'd call me back later when her system was up and running. She went through to the upgrades department to ask them though and they said that my current plan should stay the same.

On the off chance I asked before i hung up "have you released the iPhone pricing yet?" She said to me "the iPhone is out on the 24th and you'll be able to find out the price and buy it then".

Brilliant! Very helpful. Anyone heard of staff training??!! Jeez.

Can we have an FAQ at the top of the page with this post from NightFox

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because there's so many posts in here and people are clearly missing this:

It doesn't matter if you keep your existing contract - from October EVERYONE will revert to capped data. O2 have said that the free unlimited data was always a promotional offer, as reflected in their T&Cs.

In other words, after October NO-ONE on O2 is going to have unlimited data. Even if you stick with your current iPhone, you're still going to lose it.

Any whilst I'm at it:

The data usage your iPhone shows (Settings>General>Usage:'Cellular Network Data') is a 'lifetime' figure, not a monthly figure or since the phone was last turned on or hard reset.

Even if you restore your phone through iTunes, this figure will be restored along with any backup. If you want to check your usage you need to use the 'Reset Statistics' button to reset it.

Hope that helps some people!

But that is different from what people are being told on the phone. I phoned and was told I could keep my existing contract and buy the iphone4.

I know I'm not the only one who has been given the same answer.

Whoa Nelly!! The other thread is specifically about tariffs. This one isn't. Okay?

Secondly, O2 have CLEARLY stated on their Twitter feed that "Only new customers are affected but you do have to change to a new plan when you upgrade".

Many of us here are not upgrading. We're continuing contracts so not affected.

Now maybe you could try to police another thread instead?

MODERATORS - Please do not merge the two threads as suggested. This thread was intended to be a general U.K. iPhone thread where all topics relating to the iPhone 4 could be discussed whereas the other thread, as the title suggests, is specifically to do with O2 tariffs.

I think everybody needs to check their contract. It seems if unlimited data is part of your contract you'll be fine, BUT it also sounds as though nobody has unlimited data in their contract.

Those of us that enjoy unlimited data are either on a contract with a temporary promotional period of unlimited data that O2 haven't ended yet, or we're on a contract that doesn't have it at all, but have a bolt-on enabled to give us unlimited data (which O2 can pull whenever they want)

Yeah. God forbid there should be TWO UK iPhone threads on here.

Well said! :)

I just spoke to 02 and they seem to think that if I keep my current iPhone contract rolling after my contract ends I will still keep the unlimited data as long as I just buy and iPhone 4. So I could keep my contract rolling for the next 10 years and there is nothing they can do about it.

I suppose the only way will we find out for sure is to wait and see.

So how do you check the exact contract T&Cs? I don't think phoning o2 customer services will help as you can see by the varied answers people are getting, they aren't too keyed up on more detailed aspects of their products.

I am sure my contract when I took it out in June 2009 said unlimited data. It never mentioned anything about it being a promotional offer which could be removed by o2. I didn't use any promotional codes, it simply said unlimited data.

As far as I am concerned, I get unlimited data until such time as I end the contract,.

If you just go to www.o2.co.uk and click MyO2. If you can find the MyO2beta, that's much better, you can see exactly what you have on your contract.

I hope you find good news!

Simplicity

It seems clear from the O2 press release

http://news.o2.co.uk/Press-Releases/O2-introduces-new-mobile-data-pricing-model-2a3.aspx

that "Existing customers will continue under their present terms, unlimited data usage with an Excessive Use Policy."

I guess the real question is "can you just cut your SIM down, stick it in the new phone and expect it to work?" If so, what exactly is the best process to go about activating the new one, that is where you may come unstuck. I think the process will be for you to activate your new, blank micro-SIM which will effectively cancel your old one and force you to sign up to a new plan.

Can you just register the new phone with an old PAYG SIM and once it's active, stick your existing one in. That's got to be the key question.

Everything you have said here is true.

However, perhaps you should have put it in RED BLOCK CAPITALS like that slightly confused and very bossy person did earlier, just for sake of balance?

For very infrequent users like me (I topped up £60 on my PAYG 2.5 years ago and I still have over £20 left) it might be well worth keeping an eye on T-Mobile pricing (my current network but I have no connection with them (bad pun!) except as a very low-spending customer).

I was originally planning to switch to O2 because of the 12 month free data + WiFi that's bundled with the current 3GS PAYG handset purchase but, after a conversation with Chris from O2 who joined that other thread in this forum last night, I have confirmed that the new deal with O2 PAYG is free WiFi but getting the non-WiFi data access requires a minimum £10 topup in the previous month (and is then limited to 500MB of course). OK, for some that might work just fine, but for me making maybe 50p of calls a month, it's not helpful.

I did really like the idea of having a "free" data plan for my iPhone and, although I suspect that will no longer be available from anyone (I'd love to be proved wrong), the next best thing seems to be to buy Internet boosters for T-Mobile PAYG. For £20 per 6 month booster (fair use cap at 1GB) that's an annual cost of £40 or just over £3.33 a month for the data use.

Here's the link: http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/payg/boosters/

I really hope this pricing does survive until next week and make it to the next iPhone. I suppose that given I'm on T-Mobile PAYG already then I could buy my first booster today if I wanted. I do very occasionally use data on my current very old HTC Touch Cruise but I just pay for it per kB at extortionate rates but even this becomes very reasonable because they cap the daily spend at £1 so, since I only feel the need to use data on my HTC about once a month, it's no big deal.

I do expect to use data a lot more when I get the iPhone but my voice usage will still be virtually zero. Can anyone think of any better deals out there for a data-only usage? At £3.33 per month for data and almost certainly less than £0.67 per month for text and voice, at a total of £4.00 a month I suspect I might have found the best deal out there for my requirement (and again, really hoping that it does make it across to the iPhone 4 PAYG without being tweaked for the worse).

I doubt any carriers will offer unlimited internet anymore, not only because of the 1% of people who abuse it now, but because apple want to get deals to allow facetime to work on 3g. Every carrier will want to get everyone off unlimited internet as soon as possible because if facetime takes off, it will take down their networks especially if it only counts towards data and not any minutes used. Also with these 2 year contracts, carriers need to predict how much data we will be using then, not now at the beginning of the contract.

Facetime is being marketed as WIFI only:

People have been dreaming about video calling for decades. iPhone 4 makes it a reality. With just a tap, you can wave hello to your kids, share a smile from across the globe or watch your best friend laugh at your stories — iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 over Wi-Fi. No other phone makes staying in touch this much fun.

Just had a chat with T-Mobile.
iPhone 4 seems to be contract only.

SIM-only deals are excellent though imo.

If I can get a PAYG iPhone somewhere and unlock it I'll be happy.

Bad time to break my current phone :(
