yeh for now but steve said in the keynote he is doing it wifi only for now whilst he talks to networks about getting it to work over 3G
Yea and apparently at&t have put a limit on their 'unlimited' data contracts so this must be in prep to stop facetime using up too much data. Do you know if, after you set up the facetime call and you're on the wifi, if the time you spend on facetime still gets taken out of your minutes? I doubt it does so it's a fair assumption that when facetime goes to 3g then it is taken out of your data and not your inclusive minutes. You can see from this why they wouldn't allow unlimited data as people will just facetime instead of call and use minutes.

What about the preordering option?!

It is not clear whether we can preorder from O2 or not!

Also, although apple's UK website state that you can preorder on the 15th I still have the feeling that it wont work.

What do you all think?

I think O2 have confirmed somewhere that they won't be doing preorders. Only Apple are offering it.

I don't see why it won't work with apple though? Why do you think it won't work?

Got the excel spreadsheet updated again.

Ive now added in what Giff Gaff offer on their current sim only deals. Ive also based it over 12 months, but in excel you can chop and change the 12 months to 1 month and the resulting total will change.

Advantages for Giffgaff is they would offer a £10 a month sim deal giving you 100mins, unlimited texts, unlimited internet and Free Giffgaff to Giffgaff voice calls.

The price for the 16GB and 32GB models is based on Apple's prices for PAYG at the moment. These can change and when they do, I will be constantly updating this spreadsheet but the link below will always direct to the spreadsheet.

http://bit.ly/dqmdsn

Usage:

Download spreadsheet, open in excel.

From here, you can click on your network, or your tariff amounts, or any other column and tick which parts meet your criteria.

You can then look at all tariffs and come to your own conclusions about what suits you best.

Ive emailed Giffgaff regarding whether they would provide a micro sim for the new iPhone. Ill leave their prices in there for now.

Just had a chat with T-Mobile.
iPhone 4 seems to be contract only.

SIM-only deals are excellent though imo.

If I can get a PAYG iPhone somewhere and unlock it I'll be happy.

Bad time to break my current phone :(

Aargh. That totally sucks! Now I need to go through all this thread again to pay attention this time to discussions about unlocking PAYG units :(

From memory I seem to remember that in the old days O2 would unlock a PAYG iPhone on request for something like £15 but with 3GS PAYG one needed to think twice about doing that because it immediately cancelled any remaining months left on the 12 month free WiFi+data deal so for most people it only made sense after a year. Maybe now this deal is downgraded to only WiFi them, if they still offer on-demand unlocking with the iPhone 4, that might be my best route.

To save me trawling back, has anyone here been following this thread who did care about unlocking PAYG phones while they were reading it and might have absorbed that information? What's the summary of what we know so far? Are we still waiting on all networks to announce their unlocking policies and only have current 3GS policies to guide us right now?

I know the current O2 policy (quite a nice link here: http://www.allaboutiphone.net/2010/01/how-to-get-the-cheapest-officially-unlocked-iphone-in-the-uk/) .

The Vodafone website seems to imply that they will do it on demand and doesn't mention any fee (http://help.vodafone.co.uk/system/s...PIC_INDEX=null&SIDE_LINK_SUB_TOPIC_INDEX=null)

I couldn't find anything about Orange.

Possible error on your spreadsheet. I just checked the giffgaff website and all over it on nearly every page they say data is only unlimited until the end of June 2010. From then, data is 50p per day.

"You lucky giffgaff pioneers can even enjoy free UK mobile Internet up to the end of June 2010.. After that date, mobile Internet will be charged at 50p a day (if you use less than 2.5MB/day you'll pay less than 50p and if you go over 30MB you'll be charged extra at 20p/MB)."

I saw that as well, but as far as im aware, that only applies to the £5 tariff as that is the only tariff that doesnt have internet against it.

Ive emailed Giffgaff asking them to clarify that. :)

edit:

Ive checked the site, and what that applies to is say you top up the sim card with £20. You can use £10 of that money to purchase a goodybag which entitles you to unlimited internet. If you dont take one of these "goodybags" you will then pay for the internet at 50p a day.

So it would make sense when you top up, to spend part of your topup on a goodybag. In my case, id top up £10 and take the 100mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet deal :)

It works like this:

You top up your giffgaff sim card with £10. You have £10 credit. You can then purchase a goodybag and it will take the £10 out of your account and credit your account with 100mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet. If you didnt take a goodybag, you would then spend the £10 as the prices located at the bottom of the pricing page

What about the preordering option?!

It is not clear whether we can preorder from O2 or not!

Also, although apple's UK website state that you can preorder on the 15th I still have the feeling that it wont work.

What do you all think?

Apple are saying that we can pre order on their UK site on the 15th as are Phones 4U. I have no reason to believe that this will not happen. How this will work I don't know, maybe Apple will just take a deposit when you pre order and you pay the balance in store. We will have to see.

I think that Monday will be a busy day in that everyone will publish their iPhone 4 tariffs and prices.

One thing that has puzzled me about the whole preorder thing is how exactly will it work?

I can understand preordering PAYG phones from Apple but how can you preorder a contract phone with only the promise that you will activate it correctly later. There would be nothing stopping someone ordering a contract O2 phone at say £240 then sticking a PAYG sim in it. The only way it would work would be to do the contracts upfront but I can't see Apple themselves doing this with so many parties now involved.

If they are going to allow preordering of PAYG only and companies such as T-Mobile will only offer it on contract it seems pointless. If O2 are not allowing preorders then what exactly will Apple offer? Unlocked handsets?

When I signed up to O2 notifications they stated they were sending a microsim out to me in preparation, why send one out if there is one already in the box? If the phones coming from Apple are already sim locked there is no reason not to include one so it is either a shortage or hopefully another sign of unlocked handsets (or just wishful thinking).

A lot of questions on here still questioning PAYG availability. It's on O2's website:

You may know this, but you don't need a monthly contract to get an iPhone. You can buy an iPhone on Pay & Go from our online shop. Or from any O2 shop, Apple Store or, The Carphone Warehouse from 24 June onwards.

If you're already on Pay & Go with O2 and buying the iPhone 4, you'll need to transfer your existing O2 number, balance and tariff onto the new micro sim. We'll tell you how to do this soon.

Although if you want one the 24th I would suggest some serious registration and queue up from 2AM!! It took me about 4 weeks to get a 3GS when it was launched!!

Just walked passed my local T-Mobile store and they've got a poster in the window saying 'taking iPhone 4 pre-orders now!'

Would have been nice if T-Mobile had good service in my area -_-

I just called T-Mobile 2 mins ago before your post and the woman kept saying they had no information at all and to register for updates online.

I then asked if i would be possible in the future to swap my sim card for a micro sim and she was like ' A micro what???????'

Enough said

just got off the phone from o2

i wanted to know if i could get unlimited data on a simplicity and not be capped in october,

have been told, if i get on a 30 day OR 12 month simplicity plan (ive just bought the simplicity 20 (30 days) plan.. then i can stay on unlimited data!

the cap is JUST if you get the plans after the 24th, as the people buying the new iphone will take out these packages when purchasing the handset.

i asked her twice in differnt ways is this 100% correct and i was asured it was.

id buy a simplicity data plan 30 days or 12 months quickly if u want unlimited data, i didnt buy the 12 month one just in case 6 months down the line they want to cut down data on the sly im not trapped into another 6 months on there plan lol.

just thought id let you all know this.

I wonder what todays announcment will be and when....... I'm getting so impatient over the slow pace of information now!!!

i just talked to a guy and he said that even if you sign the unlimited 1 today then in october it will be capped at 500mb. and tht everyone on any smartphone tariff will be hit by this, duno if this is true but that is the info i got. im really stuck with who to go with!

Fingers crossed its soon!! I'm hoping for prices on the handset today but I think I'm probably getting my hopes up for nothing!

I'm already on the simplicity plan after the end of my 3g contract but question is....will the phone be available on pay as you go straight away (i know the 02 websites says it will be) and how much will it be?

Suppose only time will tell, hope i can pre-order a pay as you go 02 iPhone 4 from the apple store failing that i might switch networks as i'm not sure wether you can upgrade at the apple store (will thats from a 02 call center telling me that but i take anything they say with a huge pitch of salt).

The only preorder option from Apple store I can think of is for pay as you go iPhones. Activating the phone should be easy, connect it to itunes and it will be done in seconds. But if u want to transfer numbers or use a simplicity sim card I guess you will have to call O2 or go to their store.
My concern is that apple uk website doesn't really emphasize on the preorder option as the apple USA website does. It feels like apple uk are hesitant about it. That's my feeling.
I really hope we can preorder and get it on the 24th cause I really don't want to queue.

I hope O2 releases the iphone PAYG prices today so we can know what to do before the weekend.

Fingers crossed its soon!! I'm hoping for prices on the handset today but I think I'm probably getting my hopes up for nothing!

Yeah im hoping for the same but think we'll be disapointed. They might release either PAYG or contract prices. Cant see both tho.
