It might be a great thing. I just wish they would tell us :(

And that, is the big thing that's killing a lot of us really. We just want to know the "why" behind our wait. A lot of us don't really mind waiting a couple more weeks, but it would be nice to know the reasons for the delay.

Of course we'll never get an answer, or if we do it will be after the fact, because no company ever wants to discuss negative news in detail when they can afford it.

To look at this waiting for my 8800GT argument from a different angle. What Apple have done in the past is to update a product with the graphics cards they had available at the time. When ready they could offer a newer card as a BTO option or as a retail product at retail prices.

Apple could have just held back announcing the 8800GT until a time when they had stock etc. The people (including myself) would most likely have just gone for the 2600XT option and then upgrade later. Apple would have got critized (sorry spelling) for then not having a mid-high end gfx card. Either way, they will not please everyone.

Yes I have a 8800GT on order the same as you. I have to wait as well, like a child waiting for xmas. However, I would prefer this and get the 8800GT than having to buy the 2600XT, which i dont want in the first place and then buy the 8800GT retail at full price.

Just my view, but we'll all enjoy our MP's once they come, hopefully preloaded with 10.5.2 and with 10.5.2 media!

At this point, I've waited long enough that I'm willing to stick it out to the end (well, at least until Feb 13th anyways). Yesterday, I almost panicked and tried to call up Apple and tell them to downgrade my video card, but I held strong...

The way I look at it is this: Two more weeks ain't that MUCH more to wait. And, considering all the bugs and such that I've been reading about in the current MacPro's, maybe this unbearable waiting is just a blessing in disguise.

Remember folks, patience is often rewarded. So, stay strong. We'll make it through this :)

From another poster earlier in this thread, Apple told him when buying his Mac Pro that they were just waiting on the cards to be shipped to them on the first week of February... if this is true, then we could be looking as early as late next week.

According to reliable sources, the final release of 10.5.2 will most likely come around build 9C40 and should arrive well before the end of February — quite possibly in as little as two weeks

read that on another rumors site...

If the delay on the new mac pros is based even partially on 10.5.2, that doesn't sound too encouraging for the Mac's shipping prior to the listed ship dates.

hi

when I orderd my mac they told me that they are waiting for the gt8800 to be delivered by nvidia, he said this should happen in the first week of feb.
But he also said that there is an issue and they have to reflash the bios of the gt8800 cards, thats what is causing the delay.

greets chrissli

p.s. my shipment date is 02/13

That's what i've heard around the forums as well. I'm guessing they'll be dropping them with parachutes from planes once they have them ready (they're probably sick of the phone calls).

Upgrading the video later could SAVE you money!

OK ... the BTO upgrade to the 8800GT is $200, whereas to just purchase the new card when it finally arrives is $350. So how long are you willing to wait for $150?

Now... why not purchase a standard box (for $200 less) today from one of many online merchants who also give free shipping and don't charge sales tax. That should save several hundred dollars and more than cover the $150 net upgrade cost whenever the card arrives. That way you can be using your new machine now and save money as well.

The only other BTO upgrade I wanted was the 500GB hard disk (with a larger buffer), and the Airport card. I found that configuration at B&H and 2 days later have it running here. My memory arrives today and I am set. Since I didn't have to order it through Apple BTO I didn't have to pay sales tax and wait for it to be shipped from Asia. In the end I will have spent LESS $$$, I am using it now, and I will have a second video card for use, backup, or to sell whenever my 8800GT ships from Apple.

Great call.

If I weren't a student (going for the ed discount), I would take your advice. Except the only one with the discount is Apple, so I'm not saving anything by getting it now (shipping, taxes, steve's profit, etc..) and will still have to fork the $350 later. That and I want the 8800 and Wireless BTO.

Such is life.

Can't you still about break even?

I haven't used the ed discount for awhile, but I recall that the sales tax savings was about the same as the ed discount on hardware products. It would depend on your sales tax rate, but is that still about right? I sometimes found retail merchants who had a rebate plus no tax and the price was actually cheaper than getting it thru the Apple Education Store.

The advantage of Apple BTO was you could get options which retail stores usually didn't stock, and retail stores usually received new machines days or weeks after Apple was shipping them to customers. I was able to find a retail store which had the minimum basic machine WITH the Wireless Airport and the better disk drive (the 320GB only has a 8MB cache so I wouldn't use it anywhere) in stock for same day free shipping.

And, remember that you really aren't forking over $350 for the 8800GT card, the computer with the standard card will be $200 LESS, so you actually only spend $150 more and you end up with 2 video cards, one of which you can sell, use, or spare.

You can do the math for your situation, but you may be surprised how close the package prices are, and it may not be worth waiting for the built in 8800GT card.

True, you may be on to something. I could buy the thing right from a web site to avoid Uncle Sam... but I'd have to price this... where is the link for the 8800GT kit and the link for the Wireless kit?

I don't have a Mac that I am replacing, but man I really want this bad boy. I have mine on order too but it doesn't show a ship date till the end of February with a delivery date early March. Yikes that is along time.

I guess I have waited this long to make the switch...lol.. what are a couple more weeks.

By the way, for non-students out there:
You could join AAAS (aaas.org) for $99, and you get a substantial discount at the online apple store. Same as, or better than the edu discount, I believe. 4-core Mac Pro with 8800GT is $2299.

You'll pay sales tax, but it's still cheaper than other resellers.

Hear, hear!!! Right there with ya on this.

No way seriously?? I ordered mine 1/17 and it says 2/25 delivered by 2/29.

I ordered the same time as you and got the same shipping and arrival dates
wow feb 29th I can't believe they gave up 40days to wait. What a kick in the pants.
But I feel your pain, I ordered my mac pro & 20 inch monitor Jan 17th & received the monitor jan 19th. The date my mac pro is shipped at feb 25th and arrive here feb 29th. I added the 8800gt and they gave me some bs answer oh its limited and something else but I forgot, oh that the estimate shipping might be sooner then stated usually. Whatever I wish they stop playing games and just send the damn thing. Really pisses me off that I have to wait a whole 40days not using my monitor, makes no sense. But I also heard it was software issue. With 10.5.2 coming out then all the systems will ship so I am guessing Feb 13th it will be released or sooner I hope.

And to EyeCool: Yeah man, I did. I'm rethinking it because I'll only be really running FCP ...I'm not a gamer.

I know man, it's a tough decision! I want to video blog and when I see how easy it is on my wife's imac, it seems like a much more cost/effective solution.

The reason I am not going to cancel the order for what I've been calling "The Big Mac" for months is this:
I got my feet wet real well with OS X on my mac book and her iMac. Parallels works as advertised, airport extreme works as advertised, iphone works as advertised, our digital photographs are multi GB's on iphoto, our iTunes are multi GB with music and movies...

Before, I ran everything off a Dell XPS that was windows on steroids. It's their version of the MP. The problem is that I'm so sick of windows and microsoft, but I do need them for part of my work environment. Hence, the Big Mac, fully loaded.

I'm going to run the entire house with that baby and be able to back it up. I'm even going to backup the backup drives. I'm so tired of almost losing or actually losing family pictures, work pictures tons of other media, the MP is the solution for me. Plus, I can;t wait to photoshop and edit my movies on it instead of this little ol' mac book!

I hope itunes gets a "home server" capability soon. Yeah, there are ways to network libraries and share play lists, but not a stock way to have a master machine that client macs can rip/burn and access purchased media from "local server".

I like linux and have a dedicated colo server for work. Knowing some *nix make os x a lot more fun to play with too. =)

I just cancelled mine and ordered from MacMall. Saved $100 in tax right off the bat, and got a bigger HD. I don't trust MacMall as far as I can throw them, but we'll see. The guy I spoke with on the phone sounded FOS as in ready to say "yes" to anything that would help the sale and deny anything that might hurt it. We'll see. Now here's to hoping the 8800's don't cost $500 when I get around to getting one.

2-3 weeks?

Is it me or was it 2-3 weeks ago over a week ago... shouldn't it be 1-2 by now?

Shouldn't I stop whining and get on with my life by now?
I'm paralyzed by a computer.

Mine has a delivery date of Feb 26th.

Guess what I have scheduled for the 25th?

Jury Duty. Forget playing with the new machine, I'm just worried about being there for the delivery. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.

I also need the Dell 2408WFP to be released by then.

Nah, they wouldn't do that. 2-3 weeks is fine. It's said to come out in the next couple of weeks, so best not to rock the boat with a 1-2 week timetable.

Your faith is amazing. There's as much evidence supporting it coming out early as there is being pushed back :)

Yeah, I've always ran Mac at my home. But, I'm still running an old G4 iMac (the dome one) and that was like 5 years ago. Hahaha, so I think it's time for an upgrade. Yeah, I love Time Machine. It's a really easy way of accessing old files and backing up stuff.

Oh ****, you actually lost your family photos? That's no fun.

And like they say, Windows runs better on a Mac than it does on a PC.

Me too

You can add me to the official wait list. I ordered mine ages ago, and just now found this thread. My ship date is 2/20, till then, I'm stuck with just my iPhone. It is nice to have at least some idea as to why the delay. I thought it was just some crap about the student discount. On the other hand, to know I'll really have to wait is a bit of heartbreak.

I, too, share in the wait. Ordered my config on 1/21 with a 2/12 ship date and delivery by 2/18.

Dual 3.0GHz Quad-Core
4GB Memory
8800 GT
320GB HD
30" Cinema Display (arrived on 1/23 and currently hooked up to my MBP)

I was very fortunate to have my order placed by a friend who works at Apple, along with his 25% :apple: discount! :D

This is my third Apple desktop -the first was an 8500 a/v and the second was a 450Hhz G4 "Sawtooth" with original 23" Cinema Display (and that puppy set me back $7k in 1999!)
