Well probably not hardware changes full-out. But say that a new firmware for the SuperDrive comes out. Or they get a newer batch of Hard-drives that end up being better.. Or they get a shipment of a slightly newer revision of motherboards...

All slim chances, and we probably won't see any performance differences, but I'm just saying that waiting for Apple to configure your machine with the 8800 is probably a more sure-fire way to go than getting the first ones out the door and sticking an 8800 in it. Which is why I didn't go with Amazon.

Hmm.. this is a very good point (still speculation). I guess if you sat behind the Apple Executive chair, you would know the exact X amount of machines on hold for the 8800GT all waiting for a product that requires the machine to be opened to be placed into. I guess he knew this would be the second wave of units in mass going out.. Why not put an updated HW piece in there if it meant slimming out the issues.

Or perhaps this is all software related and 10.5.2.
Or perhaps... well, we're all getting the same stock machines.

Or... man, i just want my machine to get here (see attachment... again). :p

That's an interesting point.
I'm in pretty great need of a machine, and I've been debating pulling the trigger on one tonight, and just putting the 8800 in later.

Don't know if it's worth it to wait or not. I thought 10.5.2 Seed was all good. What's the deal?

It had "no known issues" - I guess the beta testers found plenty unknown ones.

Trust me - I'm in a very similar boat. i'm currently rendering out HD footage on an older PC laptop. I know that if I had my 8 core beast this process would have been done hours ago. But I think in the end it'll be worth it.

Ya it's killing me. I'm averaging about 3-4 hours of sleep a night just because I'm up all night trying to get things retouched. I have a project I need to finish, 4 final images, each made of three separate 39mp images compt together. I'm trying to get it finished for a competition due next week, but doing this on my laptop takes TOOO long.

I wonder if Apple did all this on purpose to sell more video cards...

The thing is, the performance difference for 3D work between the Ati and the 8800 is gigantic. The price difference, not so gigantic. Were they avaliable right away, I would be surprised if anyone but the most stingy buyer would actually keep the Ati..

Ya, I mean, I don't do any video work.
But now that some photo programs are starting to utilize the GPU more and more, why on earth not upgrade.

Plus, once I get my machine, and actually get caught up on my work, maybe I'll have time for a game or two.

Why Not Buy An ATI MP + The 8800 As A Kit?

Well it's not just the stingy that will have to keep the ATI. I use 4 screens. And I'm getting the RAID card + an Intensity Pro card. That means I can't run two 8800's inside due to the 300 watt limit. So I bought ATI with my 3.2GHz system and ordered the 8800 as a separate kit that comes in mid March. My MP arrives Tuesday. Will have it more than a month without the 8800.

ATI use only 50 watts each
8800 uses 110 watts each

So it's not about the money. It's more about the 300 watt total PCIe card limit.

Definitely, if you're running more than 2 screens the ATI is what you want. I apologize for forgetting that.

By the way - what's it like running 4 screens?

4 Screens Are Very Helpful

One is a portrait 20" dedicated to mail. Primary are two 30" + a Sony 46" XBR4 HDTV. Seems like not too many to me.

re: waiting for gt

Just putting my 2 cents in, I bought and canceled and reordered with the ati so I wouldn't have to wait. But I right away ordered the gt also, now instead of getting the whole thing together which would have been here as early as Feb 8th (my birthday) I have to wait UNTIL MARCH 15 TO SHIP the fing GT. Oh well I do have a GTX that I use for windows

So...since Tomorrow is Tuesday, does that mean we got a definite shot?

I want/need my computer...

Not sure on this one. Rumors have been around that nVidia would be shipping the cards this week, which would put the computer to ship next week (giving Apple enough time to do what they need to with it before shipping). They still have until the 12th to meet the original 3-5 week deadline, so we're looking at mere days if they are trying to meet this.

Well, if Apple doesn't make my Feb. 13th ship date, I'm gonna be more than a little peeved...

Only time will tell... they did delay the :apple:TV after its release time. It's just the Mac Pro has a much larger base of clients waiting on this release so I'm sure Apple will try to deliver on schedule.

Let's hope so anyway.

I heard that it's not that the cards are not in stock, it's that 10.5.1 does not have a driver for the card and that we are really waiting on 10.5.2 to be completed.

Can anyone confirm this? Do the machines need to ship with 10.5.2 on them? Or are the cards really just out of stock? Because if they are just out of stock, why does a machine built with one take 2-3 weeks, when the card kit by itself takes 5 weeks?

There's the problem; no one can honestly confirm anything when it comes to the delay. Everything said is total speculation.

I asked the sales rep directly and he's the one that tole me nVidia was going to ship the cards the first week of february. I had heard that before on the forums, but when he told me, it just confirmed it for me. Not sure if its true or not, but I spoke with him this past Friday when i ordered my Mac Pro. I'm also not sure what that means for the rest of us, but its good to know something is on the up and up.

He probably read it on the forums..

You start a rumour here, he reads and believes it, you call him and he "confirms" your rumour, and all of a sudden you think you have the truth. Magic! :)

I called Apple to order a Mac Pro this past Friday, not to confirm a rumor. Sorry if I didn't clarify but I asked him if he knew anything about the 8800GT shipment delay and he told me it was because they were waiting on nVidia to ship the chips and that they would ship the first week of February. I didn't bring it up, didn't mention I heard anything, nor that I was a part of MR... I just asked if he knew anything. I asked, he said, and I posted it here. I read it before so I didn't start a new thread... I'm just saying an Apple guy told me the exact same thing. Believe what you want to believe.

muhahahahahha! The sun will come ouuuut.... tomorrow... 4GB RAM and 2x 750GB HD's incoming as well. I'm guessing the perfomance with the 2600 won't "suck" too awful bad in comparison to my G5 2.0 with the x800xt.
