I just got off the phone with AppleCare to get support for the extreme battery drain. At the moment, the watch is actually losing charge while on a fast charger! The tech claims that my watch is running a beta version of iOS despite the beta updates being toggled to off, and that my resolution is to mail my watch to them so they can reset the iOS. Seems sketchy to me...
Funny you say that. The Apple Chat (iMessage) rep said the same thing about my running a beta version of watchOS. It's like they had no idea the updates came out yesterday.

If you're having an issue, call Apple. I was escalated to a senior advisor who told me they weren't having any complaints regarding battery usage post update. She downloaded my diagnostic logs, but they were, unfortunately, not informative because I had performed an unpair/repair procedure, so the logs were empty.

Watchos 10.2 dev Beta 1 has just been released. In the release notes they don't mention anything related to the battery. I'm going to wait for a possible 10.1.x version but I think Apple has no intention of solving it.

Im debating on trying my luck with the beta. Maybe whatever went wrong with our 10.1 update will be fixed with a new software install.

That's ridiculous. I was on with a senior advisor this morning and told him people were reporting the issue.

Unpairing and repairing did not help - if anything, it made it worse. My watch now loses power while on the fast charger.
I’m on holiday in Florida, doing Disney. My pass was on my watch so I keep having to pull the phone out. Third world problem I know, but it’s very annoying.

I can report back that I am a little relieved, after installing 10.1 and doing a few restarts, the watch that was taken off the charger at 6.30am with 100% battery, at 4pm it is at 77%, no run today with GPS though, this is much better than 10.0.1, but doesn't seem as good as Watch OS9.

I’ll add mine to the list of sudden issues. Watch4 and battery health is 83%. Up until this week I was able to charge it around 7-8pm and wear it overnight and it would last until 6-7 pm the following day. All of a sudden this week it is nearly dead by morning.

I'm seeing similar improvement with 10.1 on my series 8. I took my watch off the charger this morning at 7:30ish am and it's now reading 82% at 4pm. I was getting 5-10% drain an hour since 10.0 depending upon activity. I suspect that the IOS 17.1 update is partially responsible because my watch had more charge remaining last night than it has since updating from OS 9.x when I took it off to charge/update.

My series 5 battery life is much better after 10.1. Granted, I didn't work out today BUT all of the normal stuff I do with the watch doesn't seem to have affected battery life. Took it off of the charger at 4am this morning and it's at 54% so for me, that's a HUGE improvement.

My Mom is on her 2nd Apple Watch Series 9 (41mm cellular) now after Apple swapped out her original Series 9 (not using an Apple Care claim) due to the Apple Watch getting unbearably hot and holding a full charge for no more than an hour.

Her iPhone is on iOS 17.1 and both Watches are on Watch OS 10.1. She said everything was fine on both Apple Watch Series 9 devices until Watch OS 10.1.
On a fast charger, it slow trickle charges at best.

I feel so bad for her because I am not having an issues with my Series 9 (10.1).

SE gen 1 here…after update to 10.1 and on 100% it went to the 10% warning after 10 minutes then switched itself off around 2 minutes after that. Back on charge up to 80% 30 mins later same thing happened.

Just had a text chat with Apple support. They don’t seem to be aware of the issue. Ran a diagnostic, told me there’s no hardware issues. Then sent me a link to battery health tips. They finished with the attached. They were so friendly, I didn’t want to ruin their day by saying I’m a fully committed atheist. So I replied with, “you too” Meanwhile my watch is dying faster than an adult Mayfly.

You mean they didn't close with Jerry Springer? "Take care of yourself...and each other."

And seriously, the text chat folks clearly are out to lunch. The fact that mine thought I had the beta installed (even after I screenshot my watchOS info) told me early on that it'd be a fruitless convo.

Someone on X said that his son deleted a couple of third-party apps (sportsYou and TE Tuner) and that the problem was fixed. I don't have either of those apps, but perhaps the issue is linked to a variety of third-party apps?

I doubt it. A few people have reported unpairing multiple times and setting up as a new watch did not fix the issue.

Apple doesn't seem to be great about acknowledging any issue exists. I replaced my phone this year and image history from messages on contacts didn't work very well for me or a lot of other people. Mysteriously started working in 17.1 Not a peep about it.

Anyone try jumping on the new 10.2 beta to see if that fixes the battery drain issue?

yeah, this actually made it worse, because then I spent *literally all day* (9am - 7pm) with my watch on various chargers, it barely got to 47% due to frequently stopping due to overheating, and then that didn't even last an hour. I'm actually worried about getting a software update done to it now.

I’ve been messing around trying to get the battery to stop draining. It’s still early, but so far I’m not losing a percent every minute. I deleted all my third party apps besides for outlook (need for work)
Then I went to watch app on the phone, music, toggle off automatically add music.
At 9:00PM I had 85%. Currently 9:45PM and I’m at 82%.
Let me know if this helps anyone. At this point I would like to make it through the work day without the watch dying and hopefully they push a software update to fix the issue.

My watch (series 6) has a similar but somewhat different problem since the 10.1 update. It won’t charge well at all. I have put it on the charger at 6%, and an hour later it’s only at 11%. It fully charged all last night, but today it only lasted a little over 4-hours, and that’s with it on low battery mode, and no workouts. I turned off the optimized charging on the watch settings directly. I have seen people saying it should be done on the iPhone, too, but that seems odd to me. As that should only be for the iPhone’s battery, right? I put the watch. I’m an American expat living in Japan, so calling Apple support here wouldn't be very productive I’m afraid.

This is the answer.
I removed all 3rd party apps except for 3 that I deemed essential, and battery drain has stopped. I did not have the specific apps that you listed, but there was obviously something else causing problems.
Thanks for this suggestion!

Had very good battery performance on my Ultra 2 until watchOS 10.1. It is not really bad now, but definitely worse than before.
Could this be the double tap feature?

Re-paired, restored, back on charge overnight (SE Gen 1 on 88% battery health). Took it off at 5:17am (UK) and it went from 100% to 40% in an hour. Spent a while on Apple's support chat who were completely and utterly useless. They insisted on sending me guides on battery usage and how to update firmware never once acknowledging a bug in the OS and the fact the issue only occurred post update even though I spelled it out for them....
