It absolutely can be addressed via software. I hope it does and only want the best for us the users.

With the introduction of the A11, it’s now time for a complete redraw of the os and it roadmap.

I’m in hopes of a Pro version of iOS. One that allows professional apps and a more powerful vision.

iOS is currently in training wheel mode. I can understand why to some extent. They have to cater to all ages and technical curves in one platform. (Children, Teens, Adults & Seniors)

While I’m pretty confident the training wheels are best suited for those in the first and last of that bracket, it absolutely masks the true ability that can be achieved with the A11 and next gen hardware.

It’s a crossroads I’m not sure Apple is ready to address. The last few iOS releases have shown it has pretty much plateaued and is held back by design.

Especially when looking at the latest iPads. These devices should be the ones to launch said iOS Pro on. Would be a fantastic teething device to work with before shrinking it down to the phone.

I’m not quite sure what Apple is waiting on or if they even know the issue or path forward.

I don’t claim to have all the answers. I can only say the 6/7/8 & X all can do the exact same things with the roughly same experience. (Face ID, Screen Size and Speed being the only main differentiators)

Seems to me it’s time and overdue.

Thanks! I’m not a techy. Is the A11 that good?

It’s definitely the width for me. Typing this post I’m on my X and typing with 2 hands. Trying to type with one hand is almost doable sitting here on the couch. If I drops it will drop on my lap. At work if it drops it will drop on concrete or something.
Isn’t the width the same as the 7? The X is just a tiny bit taller. But the keyboard is still in the same position on both phones. I am just baffled by this post.

It’s an incredible achievement in mobile processors.

Roughly double that of that fastest chip used in high end Android phones.

Like I said, Apple has the chipset... it boggles the mind that they have let the OS languish so badly. This is not the norm with Apple and software. Its been the past few years that we have really seen software neglect come to a head.

Do you think has to do with Jobs not being present?

You are omitting a few details.

Weight is +40 grams

Material is also a factor.

Having a phone that is heavier and then slippery makes it an entirely different beast.

There is no way your calculations make it the same.

Jobs was great. Period.

Any company can survive if they focus on how to move forward.

When they fired a key iOS founder for differences in software vision, interesting replacements were made.

Perhaps they need another shakeup in that area.

Well I know the screen width is the same. Any difference in the rest of the width is negligible. The weight is definitely noticeable though.

The post I replied to was very specifically about the width.

An important factor for me is 1 handed use comfortably. I’m thinking one of the factors is the weight with 1 hand use, it’s not comfortable for me compared to my 7. And since a factor is the weight getting notifications from the top left and control center from the top right makes it more uncomfortable. I’ve dropped my X because of this luckily on the grass.

Width is the same, it’s the operation that makes the canvas wider for me when trying to use it one handed.

Without the home button, the device has to be centered in the hand differently.

I have to hold the phone higher in the hand to allow access to the bottom virtual bar. This takes away from thumb reach area and makes it a harder device to reach with one handed. Mathematical you are correct, I did not elaborate as to my conclusions when calculating the width in everyday use.

Again, the X is a fantastic achievement. I’m not slamming the X. There are plenty of reasons to want one.

I’m just pointing out other long term observations.

Yeah it’s definitely awkward to reach the top of the screen with one hand. I’m trying to get used to using the Reachability feature, which seems to be helping quite a bit. Have you tried that?

I LOVE the X when I laying around on the couch or when I’m inside the house. I also love how comfortably pocketable the X is. Had a Plus in the past and had to return it cause it wasn’t comfortably pocketable.

The X is an amazing device. For me it’s amazing to use when I’m in settings that can allow me 2 handed use. I don’t work in an office setting I work outside. I often get texts and have to respond to texts one handed. I also have to use certain apps one handed. Maybe I have small hands but can’t do these comfortably one handed. I have to drop what I’m doing and respond or do certain apps 2 handed. With the 7 I could easily and comfortably do one handed. I dropped my X a couple times luckily on the grass cause I was trying to do stuff one handed and it slipped out of my hand from adjusting the phone. I had to switch the sim back into my 7 for work last week.

Anyone else finding the X a little too big for one handed use? I always would have loved to see a 7 with full screen and no home button keeping the same form for one handed use.

Buy pop socket from somewhere and enjoy your iPhone X usage.

The iPhone X has definitely been a big change for me compared to my trusty "old" SE, primarily due to the size and weight of it. It's easier to lose my grip on it and harder to pocket because it doesn't just "fall" into my shorts or pants pockets the same way that the SE did and a bit harder to use one-handed and for that I miss just how portable the SE is, but I also like the nice big colorful display, fantastic camera, and easier ability to type out text messages in portrait mode with fewer typos. I really wish there was something around the size of the SE but to be almost all-screen the way the X is, so the overall physical size of the SE but with with a similar nearly bezel-less design of the X. I still have my SE as a backup and for the potential occasion where I want to "pack light" though, it's kind of a shame it looks unlikely that we'll get another phone the size of the SE, because to me that form-factor exemplifies what a MOBILE phone should be, something extremely portable.

Macbooks and other laptops continue to get slimmer and more portable (even gaming ones which are generally notoriously thick and heavy) but the most portable devices we all use continue to get more massive even with the ability to cram just as big a screen as previous large devices in something that has an overall smaller form factor, which isn't to say I don't understand why the X is as big and heavy as it is, it's meant to be as premium and feature-packed as possible and generally new more powerful hardware starts off large before shrinking later on. I just hope that "shrinking later on" portion rings true for modern/future smartphones as well, because I don't always have the want or need for a big slab weighing down one side of my shorts more than the other with my keys and wallet, and the trend seems to be unendingly towards more size and heft.

I had a Plus when the 6 Plus cane out and couldn’t wait to return it. Felt like a brick.

For me the X is as pocketable as my 7 which
Is an important factor. But...

Coming from a SE, I definitely feel its a bigger phone and one that I need to adjust. I am used to one handed usage while on the subway commuting to work. I can still do one handed but its harder and bit more awkward. I kind of figured that would be the case, when I ordered the phone, so I'm not disappointed.

Yea coming from an SE you should except that. But I’m coming from a 7.

If the iPhone X is too large for you, you can't use anything larger than an SE.

That's not true, you would still be able to use a 6,7,8 comfortably.

I came from 5s, brilliant one handed device, I work in an office environment, 5s is brilliant for sneaky texts, general one handed use and is very covert. With my X, its totally the opposite. bigger and heavier, none one handed use. I too found it very uncomfortable to use one handed, trying to reach for the control centre, adjusting the phone, almost slipping out of my hand, almost returned it. But decided I will stick with it and go two handed from now on to enjoy a larger screen.

On the other hand my wife has a 6s and I can use that one handed comfortably, its slimmer, lighter and I can grip the whole phone around its width with a certain surety and use it one handed without the fear of dropping it. It will be the same for the 7 and 8.

Yeah the pluses were always just too massive for my tastes, I have an iPad when I want all that extra screen real estate

Right, one thing one may forget is that the top of the screen for the 6-8 is lower than it is for the X as well as them being lighter and slimmer devices, that bit of extra size and heft can make all the difference for some people's handling of it depending on the size and shape of their hands, palm:finger ratio and so on.

The X screen is amazing. But what’s becoming more important to me is 1 hand use with a certain surety without the fear of dropping it. I’ve dropped my X quite a few times. Can’t remember when I dropped my 6 or 7. I hated 2 handed use when I had a 6 Plus and couldn’t wait to return it. The $1000 price tag isn’t an issue for me.

I prefer to be able to use my thumb. Plus since I use control center a lot doesn’t seem like reachability works with that.

What do you mean about it not working with control centre? This is pretty much the only thing I use reachability for! It brings down the upper screen gestures so I can easily reach control centre. It has become rather second nature - swipe down for reachability and swipe down for control centre.

I have a walking the cat test (really) where I also need to use my phone one handed. I had to change HOW I hold my phone coming from a 5s but it is definitely very doable, especially with reachability. I only use my thumb when one-handed as well.

Maybe you could try one of those popsockets or loopy cases?

I wasn't even that one-handed usability hit that we got when they increased the screen size from the 4, but lookin at the 4 now, I don't think I could live with a screen that tiny. But I'd love something like an all-screen SE, but with rounded edges, and just give me a drop-friendly rubbery side/back material. Glass and metal are pretty to look at, but just make the phone more slippery, and if you do drop it, the glass will likely crack.

Right now I'm still using my 6s, and I often wonder about whether I'd be happier switching over to an SE. I don't watch movies or play games on it. On occasion, I might play a short video clip from a Twitter or Facebook feed, and might twist the phone to play that in fullscreen. But I could still be happy doing that on a smaller phone.

I'm also happy with Touch ID and skeptical of Face ID, but if I could get an SE-sized phone with all screen, I'd be happy to give up Touch ID. I'd also like OLED and the best camera, though I'm also skeptical of the software hack they use to simulate bokeh. So I've been on the fence about getting an X. It's just a little bit bigger than my 6s and I'd get the OLED screen and better camera. But it would be another move farther away from comfortable one-handed usage. Ugh.

For those commenting about the X being harder to use one-handed compared to an 8, 7, or 6...I imagine the added weight combined with the longer size make for an even more top-heavy phone. Again, when I went from the 5 to the 6, I found he top-heaviness to be as big of an issue as the decreased reachability, and the two go hand-in-hand. Because it's harder to reach the top, you adjust the way you hold it, and the way to hold it which gives you a little extra reach also results in holding it less securely.

iPhone X is definitely not a one-handed device entirely. Think about it, they extended the homescreen longer which means more reach required to reach the top right corner. no way does any normal person's hand reach the top right corner [for Control centre] all with one hand gesture motion.

I still use mine the same way as a Plus phone would, but I kinda like it because it's abit shorter in width which makes it comfortable for one handed "Scrolling" of webpages and content.

I'm actually going to amend my last post and say that the perfect iPhone for me would actually be the size of the 4, not the 5/SE. I still have several of my old iPhones (collecting dust) and I still have both a 5 and a 4 (I forget the exact models). I just put them in my hand to simulate reaching around. The 4 has the same width as the 5/SE, but is a bit shorter. Give that an edge-to-edge OLED display (plus notch I'm sure), the best camera, and 64GB of storage, and I'd be all over that.
