If you have the widget selected in dashboard (hold down your mouse on it like you're going to movie it) and hit the dashboard key it will go to the desktop. Is that what you're looking for?

First you have to enable developer mode in Terminal. Open Terminal and copy and paste: defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES
Then restart your computer.

The only thing is the widget isn't actually attached to the desktop - it sits on top of all windows. Any way to change this?

I like widgets to stay under all windows, not unlike every other widget engine ever made (windows sidebar, avedesk, gdesklets, konfabulator, etc). To do that on a tiger/leo you need to buy Amnesty for $20. There might be a free alternative but i havent found it yet.

why can't I choose what my macbook would do when I close my screen
what if I don't want him to go to sleep
can't he work without the screen?!?!?!?!

and like all the others here
I love my :apple:

Do you want to use it in lid-closed mode with an external monitor?

Plug in power, monitor and keyboard/mouse (BT works too). Close the lid and then wake the laptop up. It will start up on the external screen and stay working while closed.

first of all thanx for helping

but what I want is: press the record button on my software and close the screen...
or open skype and close the screen
and when someone call I will be connected and be able to hear the ringing

when it go to sleep my recording is stopping and my skype is not connected

Well unless you have an external monitor plugged in it will just sleep. I'm not sure how you change this behavior.

It would be a nice option to be able to change this but do you really need to close the lid? If you are worried about battery life then just turn the brightness down to 0.

Or try this

InsomniaX will keep your computer awake.

I hadn't read this thread before -

It's funny skipping from page 1 to 2 to 10 to 30 to 60 to 72 and finally to 73 and realizing how hardcore in circles this thread's been going.

One thing that annoys me is when I resize a window which can onle be done by dragging the slower right corner. Sometimes it even happens to be outside the viewable area.
I remember that Tiger had some kind of add-on that allowed fo resizing the window from any point in the window border.

I also wish I could assign the ESC key as a one-click exit for programs.

Thats because none of the problems have decent solutions. Which brings me to another thing i hate about macs: they are barely customizable. Even the themes are stupid. We get Aqua and Grey. Steve Jobs probably thinks we are all too stupid to understand more than two themes.

You will have to forgive me, i was confused by you saying "they just work" then making excuses for why they dont "just work."

I knew someone would say that :) I wasn't trying to make an excuse. My PowerBook doesn't work because my usage patterns broke it. If it sat on a desk all day, or was only used at my house, it probably would be fine—even if I just took it to work everyday.

However, I toted it from class to class for 3 years and to work and I left it in the car sometimes in the hot Florida sun. I even took it as far as Europe with it in a sleeve in a backpack full of cameras. Granted, it broke easier than it should have as I otherwise babied the thing but I used it everyday and took it everywhere. I definitely got my use out of it. Any other laptop treated the same way would have exhibited the same problems.

I was basically saying that given the same environment, a Mac is able to do work more frequently than other computers. My friend went through three Toshiba laptops during the same period I had my PowerBook. On the last one he had a key break off that no one was ever able to put back on!

Lol, yeah, that will do it. Thats what a rational, educated person likes about macs. Go on a college campus and ask why someone chose a mac over anything else and you wont get an answer half as intelligent as yours.

I hate that i cant put widgets on the desktop without 3rd party software (that isnt free, darn it).

Thanks :) I suppose that's true. I graduated as soon as the bandwagoning became huge on my campus, so I can't really say.

I've switched to mac 1 month ago and I really enjoy it. I still use Windows and Linux though. What I actually hate about mac is exactly what I quoted.

When I tell someone that I have a new mac, quite often pple have this reaction. Like you are a fashion victim and you paid a lot of money just for the Apple brand and so on.

Again I was joking. The reason for that answer is because it's on these boards. If I were on another site talking about Macs, there would be reasons why I like them, as stated previously.

Look, for the record, I don't like fanboys.

I just have a few minor annoyances.

- I hate having my MBP get all confused when the monitor, mouse, keyboard are plugged in and I shut the lid. It wants to go into sleep mode so then I have to wake it. If it sees the 2nd monitor it should just make that the main display when it's closed.

- Bluetooth takes forever to connect on my Mighty Mouse. Not sure why but I have to wait over a minute for it to connect. Now I just leave the mouse on all the time.

Trashing should be available at any time

The only thing that I come close to hating is---

I wish trash was available in the apple menu instead of the finder menu. There are many instances when something gets put into the trash outside of the finder and you want to get rid of it right away.

I wish the empty trash keyboard shortcut was always available.

Aside from that there are little "niggles" like

Resizing a window in coverflow is messed up.

The Green button doesn't always figure out the right size, I don't know how many times i've clicked it and there's a horizontal scroll bar!!!

I do wish you could eject a disc at any time. you know how macs lock up "beach ball" for whatever reason when you're reading a disc and if you could just force it to stop, that'd be nice.

Things in the trash that can't be ejected even when you have NO programs running!!

Wow what's that, a whole 5 annoyances compared to the slow death of a billion windows errors.. I love Apple OS.

Oh wait other thing I hate about Macs, thei fanboys. ug... so stuck up and only right half the time. they're like the mac version of PC users. Elitists! meh! meh meh meh!

also as of this writing, 22.63% of the respodants are morons. Those who think a Mac cannot improve, are superb and could not be better. If yours is perfect then why are you checking for the next new mac?

What I hate more than the elitists are the people who constantly complain about the elitists.

Anyway, what I had intended to say was that when you highlight multiple items in Finder, you can only click on the top item to mass move them. Clicking on any of the others deselects them all apart from the one you clicked on... which can be annoying. However, I guess it's one of those things you get used to when you do it often. (I've had a Mac for a year and I've never really needed to move files much until the other day)

Oh and I don't like that there is a lack of british English Localization. It's making me spell things the American way, which is not good in things like college essays, and so on... because it makes me look like I can't spell properly.
