Correct, it's not a standard resolution, I am an advised user using advanced resolutions.
External screen? As external screen for me uses the old height menu bar & only uses the other one on MacBook screen when ears are in use either side of the notch.

As your screenshot has the menu bar for the ears abnormally large for the resolution if that’s the MacBook screen & I can’t replicate on the MacBook screen.

No, main screen.

One main problem with the notch is that it causes dead space from the notch upwards, making what is supposed to be extra screen real estate invalid. That’s because the User is unable to use that space as the application windows will be stopped at the bottom of the notch.

You can set it to show the menu bar in full screen. I don't really see the issue.

Exactly. Apple have provided options for developers, and until developers update apps to take advantage, there’s 2 ways for user to tell apps how to deal.

Its not up to developers to fix Apple's notch problem. Apple needs to fix their OS to compensate when menu icons / menu items get near the notch. SAcale the items in the menu bar, allow icons or menu items to "jump" the notch, or put triple dots you can click to show items that encroach into the notch area. That is on Apple.

Or just don't do the notch, period. What a stupid design. And if the notch was such a great design, everyone would be copying it in the computer industry on their laptops, or would have been doing it for years now. On the Android side, we're seeing phones coming out with no notch and it appears that the next 2 years will bring an onslaught of that. Hurry up and wait with Apple.

Here I am on my new MacBook Pro 16" M1 Pro. I like the keyboard and screen quality. I absolutely, after this first 30 minutes of using it, hate the notch. It's worse than I thought. Application windows can actually float underneath it. It is so bizarre. I will likely keep this computer because I need a larger screen portable: I bought the iPad Mini 6 recently and really like it. I think it can actually take the place of something like a MacBook Air as I have been using it a lot. Just looking for the right keyboard for it.

Regardless, I will give this another day as I really like the M1 MacBook Air I have on test as well. This will be a hard decision in the end.

I also can't believe how heavy this thing is. It's a tank, brutal.

The strangeness is app dependent and will need to be updated by the developer to work with the notch....it's probably going to take more than 2 days for everything to get updated :)

Update:

I've kept the 16" M1 Pro MacBook Pro and kept the M1 MacBook Air for the following reasons:

  • The 16" is just too big and heavy to use on the lap for any length of time.
  • The MacBook Air is excellent to use on the lap for extended periods of time given that it is so much smaller and lighter.
  • For any kind of travel where portability is important, the 16" is just too big and heavy, whereas the MacBook Air is so much smaller and lighter.
  • There is effectively zero compromise on the M1 MacBook Air.
Overall, the 16" M1 doesn't want to move much: it wants to sit on a desk and be plugged into my monitor. After about 4 days of trying to be mobile with it, using it on my lap on the couch, etc. I realized it just fails at that. I'd imagine Apple is releasing a redesigned MacBook Air next year but surely it will have a notch. So I think these M1 MacBook Airs with the non-notch design will become very popular, at least to those who don't like notches.

And then Apple users will all be like "Thank you for listening to your customers!" "That's why I love Apple!" When Apple is the one doing this to us in the first place.

But like how they've done this over the ports.. Apple doesn't deserve a single ounce of praise for bribing back ports to the Mac that they took away for several years in the first place.

Taking away those ports was the best thing they could have done: it allowed for thinner and lighter devices and much higher data throughput. I have an LG Ultrafine monitor and plugging in with one cable that does audio, video, and charges the laptop is just so far ahead technologically from any of these stupid legacy ports like HDMI isn't even a discussion anymore. Bringing ports back like HDMI and even SD cards was absurd.

Apple has failed to properly partner with industry to move things forward to high speed USB C connectivity. All of these legacy, idiotic ports are relics that have no place on new computers.

Apple should never have done it. Instead, to push the industry with other tech companies forward into the new and much better standard of USB C which truly does it all.

My works Dell laptop with USB A HDMI Ethernet and USB C ports, does charging and audio and monitor and keyboard and mouse all through its USB C port so that's not really an argument for having less ports in a laptop. It was a stupid decision to remove all the ports and still is.

You didn't read what I said:

  • USB C DOES IT ALL. It is not necessary, therefore, to have additional ports. For the first time, we have a standard that can handle extremely high data throughput that is multi-functional. Therefore, USB C renders legacy ports like HDMI obsolete. It also renders SD card slots obsolete.
  • USB C, additionally, as noted in my posts, allows for thinner and lighter devices since the ports are slimmer than legacy ports.

Here is Apple's patent on an invisible, under screen camera that they filed in the summer. It is very lengthy and extensive. Apple has clearly worked on this for quite some time, probably several years. It's clear that they have developed it. It covers both phones and laptops/desktops.

My guess is that Apple, aside from failing to innovate, decided not to include an under screen camera as described in their patent for fear of slowing iPhone 13 sales, because people would then think they would use the technology on iPhone 14... and chunks of people would wait for that next year and not buy the iPhone 13. It's rumoured that the iPhone 14 may have this technology thereby eliminating the notch... which would make sense for Apple as described... to do it on the iPhone first... then the following year the MacBook Pros may get the same treatment. So perhaps between 2-3 years from now, we may see a notchless MacBook Pro.
It will be a small notch or a punch hole. iPhone 15 front camera will be under screen. As for the MBP, I think 2024 is when we’ll see a notch-less MBP.
