Since full screen it goes away, maybe they will release a 12.x update that will drop the menu bar below the notch for those that don't want it. Similar to all the 3rd party apps that aim to fix Windows 11 perceived issues. Maybe a 3rd party will find a way. I for one would probably use it and would use one on the iPhone as well. I don't really mind the notch anymore either though.

Go to accessibility > display and turn on reduce transparency. Now turn on dark mode. You now have a solid black menu bar that will hide the notch.
I would prefer a dark or black menu bar on Big Sur right now but I like the transparency everywhere else. I wish they would add a button for just the menu bar. 10.5.2 was my favorite update.

No MBP notch for me. So I ordered a M1 air yesterday to replace my 2017 MacBook, hope it will last years.

Another no for me is the oled screen, so I will never consider iPhone 12 and 13.

The notch is in a place that wouldn't exist in the current MBP. Apple 'gave' you a higher screen, and used the extra height of the screen to move the menu bar there, that took up space that you couldn't live without under most circumstances, and put it into that gifted higher screen area. So, from what I've read, the active screen is the same size, but the menu bar is gone. You have access to ALL of that screen, without a menu bar. Is the notch a problem with all of that being stated? They seem to be saying the screen is larger, with less constraints. Sounds like I could learn to live with the notch.

I remember people saying that about the end of tube monitors. Tube monitors are long gone, except for a few that might still be around. I had a 'big screen TV', and it was a tube type TV. It weighed so much, I could barely struggle to get it out of the cabinet it was in. OMF, that was HEAVY!!! Now, a 'big screen TV' can be lifted by one person (two if your wife wants to supervise). Progress is scary. Not all progress is bad. Embrace it, or hate it, but it's going to happen with or without you. You can substitute 'change' for 'progress'. Either way, it happens...

Im going to end up returning mine due to misleading marketing. 1000 sustained is just for HDR, still has the same 500 nit display. Not much gain from my 2018 which has 1 more year of keyboard coverage, the better display would be nice.
Wait what? There’s nothing else improved in the 2021 MacBook Pros over your 2018? If your work flow doesn’t require the performance of the new Pros, why not opt for an M1 Air or Pro? They are both more powerful than your 2018.

I would like the screen size and I thought it had a super bright mini-LED display. Main reason of upgrade was to avoid the complete failure of my speakers and keyboard repair again.

I didn’t really look at it as a notch, it’s decreasing the bezel and moving the menu bar up which gives us the full display. It doesn’t appear intrusive at all.
Until you’re using an app with enough menu commands that it has to wrap around the notch to fit it all. ?

I literally could not care less - a better webcam, more screen and the software will hide it a lot of the time. Happy days. But even if it bug you a bit: you're seriously going to pass on such an insane computer with all of the other upsides because of just that? ?

If that’s the case, just take your desktop pic into Photoshop and add a black bar across the top. The Mac OS will turn the menu bar black and leave everything else transparent.

Wish I could afford one. With those specs, I'll put up with a notch any time of day

But this sort of complaint makes me wonder if the screen resolution can be set to a custom size? Shrink the vertical resolution enough to touch the edge of the notch, get the best of both worlds, and avoid returning a much-more-than-functional computer just because you can't deal with the notch.

did you not know it had a notch before you ordered it?

if i’m going to spend thousands of dollars on something i tend to know what it is first

The notch is bad both on the iPhone and the MacBook. But it's looking like this will be the future of MacBooks for a number of years. What options do you have besides switching to windows?
Yeah, I don't like the notch. I could probably live with it, but I don't like it. My other laptop runs Ubuntu, it doesn't have a notch.

I'd rather have a notch than run Windows lol.

I fear you are right. I'm glad I bought an M1 MBA instead of waiting for the new MBP now. In time I could probably get used to the notch. Maybe. I am a bit OCD though lol.
