As a personal laptop I can make it work. But can’t say I’m thrilled with the lack of m1 native programs. It’s hugely dependent on rosetta which can go away a few years from now.

Rosetta 2 won't go away any time soon. Apple still maintains Intel compatibility and they still have a late 2019 Mac Pro to support for at least 5 years. So even by 2024, Rosetta 2 will still be going strong.

The situation is different this time around compared to the last PowerPC > Intel transition. Apple is taking it very slowly during this transition. As of this time, people buying a Mac Pro with Intel processor should expect the machine to last at least 5 years longer. And Apple has not introduced a replacement for this Mac Pro yet. They haven't even introduced upgraded iMac (27" or 30") either.

The world is moving much slower than you think.

I am bored, there's practically nothing else to read on the forums except the new M1 Pro/Max laptops. Not that this is a bad thing but... the threads about I am returning / I am buying / I am scratching my head are a little too much. I have to use the ignore button more often.
Wow, I didn't even realize there was an Ignore button.

Reddit is also full of old and new side-by-side photos and my MBP just shipped posts. I think it's because people are antsy because of the long shipping times. Myself included.

The ignore function will only work if you are logged in ;).
Otherwise you will see the quotes if someone who isn't on your ingnore list is quoting the posts of the ignored users :D.

The ignore function isn't very effective, cause i never used it.

Yes, I think it is. The first 20 pages of the MacBook Pro section in this forum are filled with threads about the new MacBook Pro. It is just insane!

I think Apple hit a very sensitive spot here. It just gave power users what they wanted. The new MacBook Pro is not for me, and not for casual users. It is for those hardcore users who need, or want, or just rejoice on, all this power.

Just for the sake of comparison, the first 20 pages of the MacBook Air section get us back to more than one year ago (October 2020), before the release of the M1 MacBook Air. The first 20 pages of the iMac section will get to threads before the release of the redesigned model in April 2021. But the MacBook Pro... the first 20 pages get us to October 2021 when it was announced. Hype comparable to the iPhone. The users of this forum cannot stop discussing it. It will probably not be the best-selling Mac, but perhaps one of the most talked about.

In just a word... wow! I am impressed, not by the Macs themselves (which do not meet my own requirements), but by the reception it had on the community of enthusiasts! Kudos to Apple!
Apple has made something special, and you know it when you see the unbox video - not from "tech" YouTuber but from a YouTuber who doing a video about something else entirely (in this case Volleyball) but still found a time to do an unboxing video for the first time .. for this laptop, like this woman

Just looks at her excitement ..

Just FYI - I have the base config 14-inch MBP...and man! Everytime I use it, it is a delight, unlike the Jony-Ive led MacBooks of old!

  • The keyboard has travel and is a delight to type on
  • The display: gorgeous, sharp, responsive, and breathtaking to look at
  • The heat: or lack there of, and similarly, no fans spin up when using Chrome or watching Youtube...just a phenomenal experience
  • The ports are back! MagSafe is back! ...and the TouchBar is gone! I can't tell you the amount of times when I was immersed in a movie on my laptop or immersed in a Youtube and the bright OLED display of the TouchBar just ruined the immersion! Not so with the 14-inch/16-inch MacBook Pros!
  • ...and most importantly, the battery life: the thing just lasts and lasts and lasts...even with the lid closed, the battery doesn't deplete! You can't say the same with the Intel-based MacBooks of old! Even those laptops, with the lid closed, the battery still kept draining. I wasn't surprised, when after 3-4 hours of no use, if I opened up my Intel-based MacBook, I would see the battery drained 5-6% if not more! With the M1 Pro-based 14-inch MacBook Pro, even if the lid is closed for 3-4 hours, the battery might only drain 1%, if at all!
In conclusion, these MacBook Pros are the ultimate designs that Steve Jobs was trying to aim for, but never could see during his time: blazing-fast performance + the ultimate displays + low to no fan noise or heat output + long, long battery life + some great speakers + FHD webcam...finally the goal has been realized....

"The keyboard has travel and is a delight to type on"

Ever used mechanical keyboard? For me it's a pain to use this mbp keyboard. It's a cheap rubber dome keyboard with short key travel. I would recommend you, buy a mechanical keyboard and you will never want the mbp keyboard back ;).

The display image quality is gorgeous but only at hdr. It's not responsive, has up to 60 ms. For 120 hz it's 8.2 ms max. needed ;).

The thermal handling is good @ office task. No fans. I have to agree.

I miss ports. USB-A and RJ 45 + hdmi 2.1. Hdmi 2.0 is a joke for 2021.

The battery life is only long, when you are doing office things. Hdr for example is draining the battery very fast.

The macbook has no ultimate design. It has some benefits, but a lot of down sides, which aren't apprciated for such a high price tag.

I saw yesterday the same macbook which i have with 2 tb instead of 1 tb ssd for a 60 Euro lower price, ok it has no availability. I thought Apple prices are very stable :D. If it would be available i had really hard to think about sending mine back. For ~3800 Euros 2 tb are sounding much more fair than only 1 tb. The 1 tb model is around 300 Euros cheaper at this seller.

So here we have somebody telling why he's happy with their MBP, and next, within an hour really, we have somebody trashing their opinion basically saying they definitely shouldn't be happy with it.

I'll never understand the need of people to trash somebody else's happiness. What's in it for them? Why can't some people let others enjoy their purchase?

It’s an exercise in discrediting the OP’s opinion while trashing the object of the OP’s opinion.

@MLVC

Because it's not representing the reallity. It's only fair when the audience gets a real impression about what they should expect from this mbp. I have seen on forums a lot bad purchases because they got misleading information about products ;).

He is absolutely right. It is not upgradeable, has a fast degeneration (especially for the aluminium and the keyboard, both looking ugly after short time, pretty poor for a premium brand) and is very expensive. In my opinion only a toy for the richer people or some business use cases. I wouldn't recommend this to common people who can't affort a total financial lost.
One word: Nonsense. The oppsite is true

This keyboard is nothing which should be used for a such expensive laptop. Only Omron or Cherry Mx mechanical switches are matching this high price point. And of course it's only cheaply painted and the color is peeling of over time. For better mechanical key caps with laser etching this isn't the case ;).

@Romain_H

This isn't case :D. Then read user reports about M1 2020 mac books and macbooks before 2020.

You do know that your opinion does not equal reality right? I mean, I shouldn't have to tell you this but your comment seems to indicate somebody has to remind you that your opinion is just that, your opinion.

True. Thing is: its you who is way off reality and gives misleading advice plus making wrong claims.
Not that anyone falls for it

@MLVC

I give only objective report about the macbook pro keyboard quality. Rubberdome isn't something which is matching high expectations and peeling off painting is self-explanatory. But carry on and tell the opposite is true :).

You are anything but objective. Objectively, you are wrong pretty much 100 %. And yes, I‘ll continue to set straight your bogus claims

This is my theory. I think what ends up happening is that the regulars on these kind of forums repeatedly see the same thing being posted ad nauseam. But not everyone is a regular, and many non-regulars won't bother searching before posting about a topic that have been hashed to death many times before. After awhile, forum fatigue sets in where some regulars may feel annoyed at repeatedly seeing the same topics and respond in kind.

I'm not making a statement or taking a stance. Just sharing an observation.

You realize a mechanical keyboard is old tech and not everyone works or lives by themselves. Mechanical keyboards are very loud and the only one I've heard that is supposedly silent is one from Razr that is unreleased.

While a mechanical keyboard may be cool for hipsters or gamers it's not needed in a laptop. The size and weight that it would take to accommodate those keyboards would negate any portability. Lastly, if I had to hear a mechanical keyboard all day I would struggle not to hurt someone because people that buy mechanical keyboards tend to have no consideration for other people. Try having a spouse that would listen to you type all day on one of those ha.

I'll have to agree as someone who spent way too much money building one from scratch (soldered all the switches onto the PCB board, lubing the switches, solid block of aluminum case, etc -- the whole nine yards). Even though I love the way mine sounds.

"Pro computer" with only 16 gb not upgradeable ram sounds for me like an insult :D. 32 gb ram are the bare minimum for a professional. Everything else needs the swap. Which is compared with the ram damn slow. Who will invest so much money if there is such a bottle neck? Nobody wants to pay twice because the soldered ram is not enough.
On a pro laptop you mean. And 16GB is more than enough. I'm a data scientist and to be honest this thing with the needing one bazilion GB of RAM is mostly nonsense on a laptop. If you need more then buy a desktop.
