What are you on? You're the one who said "The first retina MBPs were actually about the same price as these new ones are....." Well, I've had one of these and they were not. And got me another last year courtesy of my employer, but I haven't stopped peeking at the Apple Store prices in the meantime.

Even considering inflation and all, these MBPs were MUCH cheaper.

The base model MacBook Pro 13" with retina display when released in 2012 was $1,699
The Base model MacBook Pro 13" 2016 model with Touchbar is $1,799
I still don't understand where the crazy price hike is.....

I think he is comparing the $1499 model without the Touch Bar to the $1299 model before. However, they have also bumped up storage to 256GB. That said, the fact that they are keeping the $1299 model around for the time being leads me to believe they will quietly drop the price of the base model to $1299 in next year's update and drop the 2015 model.

Nope. Not the $1299 model. I don't even know where you get that number from.

"Just as with the old-style MacBook Pro, the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display has Intel’s 3rd-gen Core i7 Ivy Bridge processors inside. There are two spec models, the entry level at $2,199 with a 2.3GHz quadcore (supporting up to 3.3GHz Turbo Boost and paired with 6MB of L3 cache) and a $2,799 version with a 2.6GHz quadcore (supporting up to 3.6GHz Turbo Boost and with 6MB of L3 cache). The latter can optionally be upgraded to a 2.7GHz quadcore (with 3.7GHz Turbo Boost and 8MB of L3 cache) for an extra $250." http://www.slashgear.com/macbook-pro-with-retina-display-review-mid-2012-13233826/

The telltale sign of the troll.

Why do kids use that term? I'm 40, I'll never understand why or how "troll" became a common term. Normally it's used when someone's "triggered" and can't justify their erratic and unprofessional behavior. I was being playful, as others, but you seem a bit... unsteady and young... so moving on and best of luck to you, lad.

I really like the design but it seems a bit botched together and lacking in key areas.
What seems botched to you? I think the design and execution is amazing. I can't think of a single thing wrong with it.

I do, however, has several questions that will be answered in time…
  • I understand why the Touch Bar display doesn't go all the way to the right-side since that's where Touch ID is, but why not bring the display all the way to the left-side. I don't think there is Touch ID on both sides (just to get that out of the way for completeness-sake). I guess it could be to balance the right and left sides, but it looks a little wonky to me to have the digital Esc key vertically off-center from the Tilde/Backtick key below.
  • Where is the physical power button? I don't see it on top so the far-right edge of the Touch Bar could be pressure sensitive or it could be somewhere else, like the side as with the Mac mini.
  • How will the Touch Bar work with Windows under Boot Camp? We know the T1 chip is essentially the S-series chip, which means it could be running OS X/Darwin as a really stripped down version of watchOS rebuilt for this simple system, not unlike what Apple did for macOS nee Mac OS X to make iOS, or it could just be the HW and a non-OS X/Darwin-based OS. It could also feed directly from the main macOS, potentially even its primary GPU so that it's technically 2 displays. If that's the case (which I doubt) it'll likely be wonky for Windows and you'll probably see someone hack it to get a full Windows OS on that little Touch Bar just because.
Addendum: Regarding the Touch Bar, how does this carry over to desktop Macs with BT keyboards? I think the T1 likely contains the GPU needed for the display, but there are performance, cost, security concerns with a Touch Bar, Touch ID, and Apple Pay on a Bluetooth keyboard. The new models with a built-in battery and a Lightning port for charging could be made more dense with a larger battery, and since we already have Apple Pay payments with current Macs via the Apple Watch, Apple already believes it has the security worked out, but it's not simple engineering to make this work as seamlessly as in last week's demo.

Touch ID is the button.

You forgot USB 3 and micro-USB 3.

I have every one of these "standard" cables on my desk right now:

USB-Stecker-faac89aa6a57cce7.png

And this without even getting into the proprietary stuff.

I have a bin full of cables, all organized by type and subtype because it's out of control. Wasn't there a proposal in the EU for a single, universal connection/cable to deal with the massive e-waste generated by so much tech?

Found a few articles from ~2014:

Europe to Have One Charger for All Mobile Phones, Global Standard Next?

Now you're being cute. I told you the difference for the maxed out 15" MacBook Pro and you're digressing to compare the 13" models.

10-20x? Was your previous computer a G4 powerbook? Other than the super fast read/write speeds, the specs are largely unchanged from the last gen.
It's a 2013 15" MBP, but it wouldn't matter if it was a 2015 MBP bought last week. As I stated already, the benefit comes from the power of USB-C.

Thanks but no thanks. I'll grab a Dell that costs $1000 less with better hardware and industry standard ports.

Apple has jumped the shark. OS X is a better OS but it's not worth an extra $1000.

LOL! Please link me to the 15" workstation class Dell laptop that sells for $699. I'll be waiting.

I understand that... To Apple, and others, the "Touchbar" is the reason for the price hike. Not saying I agree, just a fact.

Heck in $2006 I paid an extra $200 to get an mere extra 20GB on the stock HD, but really it was to get the black color on my new MacBook.

The mythical power of USB-c that nothing can harness at the moment. Literally, because (almost) nothing is compatible. OK. Good luck with that.

USB-C is USB, DP, and HDMI all rolled into one port. You literally just need the cable to make it work. There are tons of accessories already available. CalDigit makes a great USB-C dock that I use with my laptop...plug and play, no drivers needed.

Only 1288 products from one store that support USB-C. Including a USB-C-to-SATA adapter that will allow re-imaging of drives to take place while en route and thereby saving me about 1 hour per job by simply not having to use AC power before or after the trip as inverters don't work properly with the USB-A-to-SATA adapters. And that's just ONE example.
But it's not luck, it's working smarter, not harder. Don't worry. Soon enough you'll be using USB-C and you'll be grateful for it, yet you won't even remember how you sounded when you said "nothing can harness [USB-C] the moment."

Amazing that you prefer to justify an expensive usability workaround because you're not offered the default option anymore.

Why can't be honest and upfront about these things?
At least label them differently. Who's going to actually know these things? Do real Pros simply ignore the 13'?
What happened to simplicity?

I don't know if you're a cocky teenager or like to sound like one. At the moment I'm using all ports: USBA, HDMI, SD and TB2, and I'm certainly not grateful for having to turn the super thin/light/whatever laptop I would have bought at a ridiculous premium into an even pricier octopus to retain its usefulness (and have to carry them all around like a nomad).

Wow this is very unlike Apple. I remember when they came out with USB 3 they boasted how they didn't have to label them blue because all ports had the same speed!

I wonder what people would rather have: Two Thunderbolt 3 port that don't operate at full capacity, or a single USB 3.0 port (Not USB-C) that operates at full USB 3 speed.

Yes exactly. So in the short term nothing changes, as people will replace on cable for another to adapt to USB-C. But in the long term it will be one cable for most products with the same cable on both ends.

I can't wait to get rid of HDMI connectors, for instance. And I will be thrilled when all of my accessories and devices use USB-C standard rather than one of almost a dozen different connectors I'm currently sporting on devices.

In the interim it will generate more e-waste, but after the transition things will hopefully be simplified considerably. And of course wireless will be the ultimate salvation.

Nothing says maturity or intelligence than claiming that the same universal, high-power, high-I/O port for charging, data, and video can done from a single USB-C port to a nice 5K display with its own USB-C hub built into the back is an "octopus." How miserable it must be to be able to have one plug that everyone can use. It's amazing you ever moved on from VGA, serial and parallel ports.

How would that work? The iPhone 7 hit shelves 2 months before the new MBPs and it has USB-C instead of USB-A so that only the 12" MB and Chromebook could use it for charging? Do you not realize how few devices use that port right now? Do you also not understand how few devices will use that port next month when the new MBPs arrive?

The ONLY solution was to use USB-A on the iPhone 7 and to think anything different is stupid. Please try to use some critical thinking before replying. It's really not that tough to figure out that the iPhone 7 shipped in September.
I'm talking about the device interface, not the other end of the cable. LG G5, HTC 10, Huawei P9 come with native USB-C. Apple now introduced a Lightning-only phone. People are eventually going to buy Lightning headphones. (Eventually they are obsolete when iPhone 8 comes with USB-C.) That's not how you promote USB-C as standard. Instead we have a USB 2.0 Lightning interface on Apples flagship device that connects via an adapter to USB-C. Apple is not leading the industry anymore. There are enough manufacturers who are incorporating USB-C ports in their laptops already. Examples: http://windowsreport.com/usb-c-laptops/ ...and counting. Apple is just forcing their "professional" users to use dongles in standard scenarios by going USB-C only instead of 2 USB-C and 2 USB-A. There is no valid reason to go USB-C only on a currently shipping professional device. (1mm Thickness is not a valid reason on a pro device.)
