Just spoke to MacMall and the ETA has been pushed back to 9/26 for them to get them in stock, so another week + shipping
Now this is giving me time to contemplate whether I should just cancel my order (haven't been charged still), and just get the Cinema Display on eBay for around $700-$800 and have it this week.
Any thoughts? I mean now that I think about it, I get:
-Excellent cable management (All in a Thunderbolt Cable)
-A FireWire 800 (I don't use)
-A Gigabit Ethernet Port (I can plug into my MBP)
-Another Thunderbolt port
-A FaceTime HD Camera (vs. iSight?)
All for around $250-ish more?
It almost doesn't seem worth it if the previous generation I can snag for $700-$750.
This is exactly what I did. Found an ACD on Craigslist and bought it for $750. Also, the guy I bought it from just got it in May, so its still new.
Now back to your decision making question. I have the current Air and MacBook Pro, and IMO, right now, you do not gain that much more w/ being able to run Thunderbolt instead of the Mini DisplayPort & USB.
The 2 things that I will really miss w/ not having the Thunderbolt display is 1) Gigabit ethernet 2) Being able to run 2 cables w/ the Thunderbolt instead of 3
In the case of the Air, you still have 2 cables snaking on either side w/ both the ACD and the Thunderbolt display. Ethernet would be nice for sure.
As for the firewire and Facetime camera advantage, they are nice to have, but not dealbreakers. I don't have any firewire peripherals, and they generally cost more. As for HD vs regular def camera, its just for video conferencing/chatting. The regular isight camera quality is still quite good imo.
As for thunderbolt stuff, where are they? My guess is that we will not see these peripherals go mainstream until the second half of next year at the earliest. And when they do hit the market, they will be expensive initially. Until the PC market adopts Thunderbolt, this stuff will go for a premium.
Lastly, picking up an Apple refurb or used ACD right now is a great buy if you want an Apple display. I bet if you try to sell the ACD a year from now, you can probably still sell it for little less then the current price, then pick-up the Thunderbolt display for not much of a loss. Keep in mind that there is still a big base of Macbooks, iMacs, Minis, and Mac Pros that only take the mini displayport.
BTW, last year when the ACD was introduced in the summer, it did not get shipped out by Apple until the fall as well
Good luck to everyone who's waiting.
