If you have ever used UPS in the past you would know they sit on stuff if it is standard delivery. Anytime I have bought stuff online and had to use UPS, standard will always sit at a location for several days to meet the 3-5 day deadline. UPS is worthless.

This is exactly what I did. Found an ACD on Craigslist and bought it for $750. Also, the guy I bought it from just got it in May, so its still new.

Now back to your decision making question. I have the current Air and MacBook Pro, and IMO, right now, you do not gain that much more w/ being able to run Thunderbolt instead of the Mini DisplayPort & USB.

The 2 things that I will really miss w/ not having the Thunderbolt display is 1) Gigabit ethernet 2) Being able to run 2 cables w/ the Thunderbolt instead of 3

In the case of the Air, you still have 2 cables snaking on either side w/ both the ACD and the Thunderbolt display. Ethernet would be nice for sure.

As for the firewire and Facetime camera advantage, they are nice to have, but not dealbreakers. I don't have any firewire peripherals, and they generally cost more. As for HD vs regular def camera, its just for video conferencing/chatting. The regular isight camera quality is still quite good imo.

As for thunderbolt stuff, where are they? My guess is that we will not see these peripherals go mainstream until the second half of next year at the earliest. And when they do hit the market, they will be expensive initially. Until the PC market adopts Thunderbolt, this stuff will go for a premium.

Lastly, picking up an Apple refurb or used ACD right now is a great buy if you want an Apple display. I bet if you try to sell the ACD a year from now, you can probably still sell it for little less then the current price, then pick-up the Thunderbolt display for not much of a loss. Keep in mind that there is still a big base of Macbooks, iMacs, Minis, and Mac Pros that only take the mini displayport.

BTW, last year when the ACD was introduced in the summer, it did not get shipped out by Apple until the fall as well:)

Good luck to everyone who's waiting.

You my friend have a great point. I may get this one in mint condition off eBay for $770. I'll wait to apply the AppleCare if I end up getting the ATD before April 12, 2012 (when this AppleCare expires for this ACD). I can probably sell it for a bit more like $800 anyway.

Just did it, hopefully it will be here by Thursday or Friday. $770 shipped, not bad. Now to update signature :p

if you have macbook air 2011 version... can you see if it can play games smoothly on that crazy resolution?? I've been waiting to see if someone actually got their hands on a thunderbolt video. btw, nice unboxing video. looking forward to hearing back from you

this is not my video, i just saw the video on youtube from a user i subscribed to, but my video will be up later this week

You must not have any peripherals. With a TB display I can run Ethernet, speakers, USB drives, FireWire 800 drives, video signal all through one thin TB cable. I haven't decided to buy one yet but trying to say you don't gain much makes no sense at all. Unless you are trying to justify buying the older model. Also all the manufacturers are saying their TB devices will be out by end of year not middle of next year. You are doing a lot of rationalizing that you may regret.

Or you could change the resolution for particular games like everyone does.

I called the Apple Store over the weekend and one guy told me that they wouldn't be getting any in store for, what he thought would be, 3 months. WTF?? I called again the next day and talked to the manager and he said he would ship one to my house but it would take about a week. I think the first guy got sick of me calling twice a day. This display would be useful in the latest project i'm working on so I need it ASAP!

Thanks for the feedback.

Don't get me wrong, I do want the Thunderbolt display. But at the same time, it seems that everyone is making it seem as though the Thunderbolt display is so much more superior to the ACD. In the end, the ACD also includes a hub, just not thunderbolt.

Also, since this is a display, the biggest reason I am buying this is to use it as a monitor. And since both should be equivalent in display type, quality, and resolution, I am OK with not having those Thunderbolt advantages that you mentioned.

Also, Thunderbolt accessories are still not available for sale. Yea, companies can promise this or that, but until we actually see stuff for sale, we still don't know when they will hit the market. So for now, I might as well just get the ACD that is available, and then sell it later for the Thunderbolt display once there are Thunderbolt accessories to upgrade to.

Mine will arrive within this 3 hours. Just wondering that if I put it to sell on Ebay, do you think I can get some profit from that?

Heh, Heh. But I won't, I have some plan for my jobs on book translation and thesis work. :)

There is something up with Apple UK. Just come off the phone to them and rep was very helpful about my order. He thinks there are stock issues but he says the problem is at Apple end and he is going to speak to another department and come back to me.

I think maybe demand has outstripped supply and they did not expect as many orders.

Saying that the time did drop form 2-3 weeks to 3-5 days yesterday? he did comment on this but said it was 4 weeks on his system

Just adds more to the confusion but this could be why stores still do not have them!!

Just moved to “Preparing for Shipment” (Not eligible to cancel or return). I ordered 8/2 and this change happened sometime last night (9/20). Hopefully it won’t take too many days to print the shipping label. -- lol

Well, the way things are looking right now I'm not too hopeful of seeing on of these anytime soon. I've got reservations for two seminars at the Aberdeen store on 12th October, I wonder if they'll have any in stock by then.

Besides, most devices are USB unless you have a FireWire hard drive. USB is still on the ACD, and if 3 aren't enough, I can attach a USB Hub to it like my 10-port and still plug all of that in on one cable. Ooo, I have to plug in my Gigabit to my MBP, takes 3 seconds. To take an extra 6 seconds, save $200+ and have it now, worth it. Maybe once all of the reviews are in and any kinks are worked out, then it might be worth it to get an ATD.

Once Thunderbolt devices are available for non-ridiculous prices, then this will be worth it even more. Until then, ACD is the way to go.

Ordered in July, was dispatched on Friday with UPS. Now Apple has either had it held at the depot or had it completely returned. Fed up

I'm seeing the similar soundings messages on the UPS website and no updates from Apple yet on what's going on.

It's almost like Apple want to get their hands on it before handing it over.

Well im just pleased that at last mine went to preparing for shipping earlier but it is worrying hearing about these other stories with UPS as im sure this will be who mine is shipping with.

I wonder if they are being held to be delivered same day as store launch which may be one day this week?

----------

Thing is though if that was the case this is hardly a big product launch like the ipad or iphone is it was released in July and im sure some in the UK have had delivery already

All seems very strange:confused::confused:

Mine arrived at local UPS this morning and scheduled for delivery tomorrow. I called UPS to find out if I can pick it up. They said sender (Apple) must release it and even though it is at the local UPS, it cannot be given to me until tomorrow.
