Damn I've seen some ugly people in my time. But Jay z takes the cake
What incredibly juvenile, denigrating and contemptuously unsavoury commentary. There is more to a person's value than dictated by their external appearance. Let's hope karma does not cast an educative hand your way to let you discover that the hard way.

I love how everyone here's assuming that Jay Z was being unreasonable, or an a*****e, or whatever.

Maybe Apple was playing hardball (as they're known to do) and they could not reach a (presumably) fair agreement.

Business is business, folks, and we don't really know why this is happening.

His music is available for those that want to hear it (for the record, I don't, I'm a metalhead).

Whoopteedo if it's not on Apple music.

Unlikely considering Apple pays the same royalty rate to everybody, which is higher than the rate paid by Spotify or Tidal. There is nothing to negotiate.

Apple pays for exclusives sometimes for new albums or exclusive access like when the Beatles offered their catalog.

However, JZ's music was already in Apple Music. I say publicity stunt.

It's so disappointing to have to share this forum with such narrow minded people. I'm all for free speech and opinions but have some class. People constantly denigrating other genres of music as if only their musical tastes are the ones of value. This polarising post has almost been a microcosm reflective of an intolerant society. People almost deriving pleasure in cursing out other people for their creative endeavours. Live and let live.

i like his old music anyway and have what I want already in my personal collection. I sure won't be chasing him to Tidal.

Seems like anticompetitive behavior which under the previous admin's doj would've been investigated, well, perhaps not due to their racism.

I would have to be a die hard fan of an artist for me to go through the hassle of switching streaming services or paying for a second streaming services. I see very few people doing these things where it really won't affect Apple negatively or Tidal positively..
Can't you just buy a CD, and put it on your computer?

He is worth more then $500 million
Let's make this very, very clear: He may own $500 million. That doesn't mean he is worth $500 million. He is worth just as much as Bill Gates and just as much as a penniless, homeless man in the street begging for food.

I find it interesting how dismissive the audience of these types of sites are. The main driving force of sales and popularity in music comes from a more hip and younger audience. To a lot of you guys Jay-Z music being gone is no big deal but stop trying to pretend as if hip-hop music isn't normally one of the best selling genre in main stream music every year. With the exception of artists like Adele, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé it's usually rappers who have the highest album sales.

Imagine there's 5,000 Jay-Z super fans globally. I don't have any idea what the actual number is but keep in mind he's been making pretty popular rap albums since the early 90s and he's many people's favourite artist (and the world is a big place). This super fan number may be much higher. The revenue gained from them (just the superfans) coming to Tidal just needs to be higher than the very low streaming royalties he's getting from MUSIC and Spotify.

This is a business decision. People were saying Jay-Z should close up Tidal and then he made more than all his money back when Sprint bought 33% of the company. Jay-Z has access to people that have good estimates on what this super fan number is. He knows what he's doing.

Saying you don't like rap, "he's irrelevant", or "Jay-Z who?" Doesn't make you smart.

If you're a fan then you just got screwed. If you're not then it doesn't matter. Will fans go to tidal? NO because fans have hard copies or downloaded content. Streaming services only work if you have ALL the content.

Everyone looses including gay-z in the short term. In the long term he might be looking to squeeze better streaming rates but Apple Music pays more than them all in terms of royalty payments per track.

Best rapper alive!

So is this going to be the new trend? Every music superpower gets butt hurt and pulls their catalog from streaming services only to go launch their own?

Pretty soon we'll have services from Taylor Swift, Adele, Kanye, Katy Perry, Maroon 5, etc. Only $100/month to subscribe to a dozen different services to hear your favorite artists!

I just checked, his songs are still in some of my Spotify playlists.

Though if they go, I'll just do without (though I still have copies of his earlier albums elsewhere).

Jay Z, isn't so important that I'll switch to Tidal just for him.

Sigh... The whole reason why music streaming is doing so well (and piracy is way down) is because of complete catalogues.

They can divide it up like the video services do, but people will go straight back to downloading.

As it is this wouldn't affect me as I don't like rap music. But I like some others in his catalogue (Rihanna for one). It's a worrying development.
