Worrying news from MacFixit:
"dmnotifyd" apparently sending Apple user information

Several users have reported that an application called "dnotifyd" is sending system information back to Apple.

Jim Czech writes:

"Since my upgrade last night to Tiger, I have noticed something going on in the background. This was never observed in the past, but thanks to Little Snitch I 'caught' this one.

"This particular app is attempting to contact 'configuration.apple.com' every few minutes. I don't have a packet sniffer, but am curious just exactly why Apple needs to 'check my configuration' every few minutes.

"After the upgrade, I started testing all my apps, one by one, to see if there were any compatibility issues making the move from 10.3.9 to Tiger. When I applied the Little Snitch update, I then noticed this "dmnotifyd" app was phoning home. I thought it was possibly related to running each app and then Apple was gathering stats for compatibility, etc.

"However, even with no applications running, 'dmnotifyd' is still contacting Apple.

"I have allowed several requests (since I have nothing to hide) thinking it would stop. It doesn't matter whether the request to send is allowed or denied, it runs non-stop."
What's going on here?

Cursor won't go away

My mouse cursor stays on the screen while the screensaver is running. Not a big issue but still rather annoying. Anyone else? And I also noticed 2 help menus in automator.
And, how do I add a screencapture to a post?
thanks in advance

after I minimize a quicktime movie, I can not get it out of the dock. I have to close quicktime and restart the movie.
bummer.

Neither "dnotifyd" nor "dmnotifyd" turn up ANY google results as of this moment. If this were a serious problem, I would think that it would be somewhere on the web. What's curious is that it doesn't even find the reference on macfixit.com. Put on your foil hats, we may have a coverup!

UPDATE: configuration.apple.com is home to Virex definitions and some parts of the iDisk service. Affected machines are more than likely .Mac subscribers. If this happens and you DON'T have .Mac, please post, so we can investigate further!

Additionally, dNotify is a command tool for making notification of directory changes (in Linux, anyway). If this is used by OS X as a daemon, it could be part of .Mac syncing your iDisk on the fly.

I have .Mac...Little Snitch has no record of these apps...what should I be looking for - do we know ports / address type ?

Is your iDisk connected? If so, you would be looking for a dnotify daemon/process attempting to connect to configuration.apple.com on TCP 80 (or maybe 443 if it's a secure connection). I think just plain "notifyd" is a standard OS X component, but this is the first I've heard of "dnotifyd" or "dmnotifyd" and a Spotlight search turns up nothing on my machine. Since I don't have it, I'm not inclined to think this is a security risk or unauthorized tracking by Apple.

....) try this: Look in the /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays (or one folder up from here) folder for the calibration file you used in Panther. You can then put it in the same folder of your Tiger install, or maybe use the ColorSync utility, to use the same calibration under Tiger.

Thanks, doing that sorted it out - display now correctly calibrated!

When you change playback speed in Quicktime and pause/play it with your spacebar, it reverts back to the original speed.
And also, I'm getting 1 fps on my 1.5 Ghz Powerbook with that HD material.

I select the slideshow option as you have to, from the Action Button (though I could have done it by a right click. What comes up?

This. That's right, a slideshow of… one image. What the bloody hell is the point of this??? Is it not unreasonable to have the index sheet and the previous/next image button in Finder slideshows too? You still have to select all the images you want in Finder slideshows, which annoys me massively. It wouldn't hurt to put the next/previous image on slideshows from the Finder without selecting multiple images first. It almost makes the option redundant - there's no simple way to access them, then they're crippled unless you select multiple images. Windows XP has allowed basic full screen slideshows through a folder since the first release in 2001 - how has OS X still managed to miss this? (This really really annoys me, as you may note.)

There's probably other things I've not really noticed yet, but I've had it less than a day, more will come.

To everyone - the Mac OS X Feedback Page still doesn't offer 10.4 as an OS option, but as soon as it does, be sure to submit your issues to Apple. Otherwise, they may well remain unfixed.[/QUOTE]

You have to do a select all before you do slideshow

British and US keyboard layouts

Sometimes when I click on an iChat txt window with somebody, the keyboard layout symbol on the bar at the top of the screen changes from British to US.
Odd!!!

This works properly for me, at least some of the time. :rolleyes:But when it does start iTunes and start playing, it seems to go back to the full library play, rather than playing the playlist that was selected on the flipside.

Tiger Bugs

I have found a couple of things that "Bug" me. The font used by the Widgets don't display properly. They are too large and are not positioned right on the Widgets Like they are being substutted by another font. I cannot figure out why this is.I am not running any kind of font management programs so I don't know why that is.

Second I went to burna disc this morning and I got a message "the disc media is not recognized by this drive" or some crap like that. Up until I installed tiger I had burned dozens of those things.

Can anyone help with these issues.

The Significance of July 17

Sox said:
After I close iCal, the date shown in the dock icon always reverts back to July 17th.

I always thought the default icon for iCal showed the date "Jul 17" because it was the date Apple was founded, or it was someone's birthday or something. If anyone knows the significance of the date, if any, I would be interested.

That being said, I don't know that it is a "bug" that the icon reverts to its default when you close the program. If you'll notice, the icon for Mail reverts to its default even if you still have unread messages after closing the program, so the behavior is the same.

My suspicion is that Apple have not developed the technology to have an app icon in anything but its default state when the app is closed.

Empty "Recovered files" folder in Trash upon startup

I empty my trash all the time, so I'm used to seeing the trash show an "empty can" icon; therefore, I was surprised when I restarted the computer and saw that the trash icon showed a "full can" icon upon startup. I clicked on the trash to see what was in it, and it shows a folder called "Recovered files." I clicked on the folder and there was nothing in it.

I have either restarted or logged out-and-in several times, and this "Recovered files" folder is recreated each time, no matter that I logged off or restarted with an empty trash can.

Another minor interface bug is that, when I open the trash, the Finder window it displays sticks out to the right offscreen. Even when I move the window so that the entire window is visible, it does not remember the window placement for the next time. It puts the window in the same "half-way offscreen" place each time, just as it stubbornly fills itself with an empty "Recovered files" folder at each startup! I don't see how this could be a feature.

iChat Bug

There is a significant bug in Tiger's iChat. You cannot make voice calls to machines running Panther.

Tiger-Tiger iChat voice calls work, Tiger-Panther do not. The person making the call gets the error message, "There is insufficient bandwith to maintain conference." and the recipient a "There was a network timeout starting the conference.".

I tried again on another machine, which was running Panther 10.3.9, and the chat worked perfectly.

I don't know if this applies to Video chats as well or not.

One more that really bugs me: when using Spotlight to search for iCal events, clicking on the "found" events opens iCal to TODAY's date, but not to the event found in Spotlight. What's the point of that?

Anyone else having this problem?

It goes to the event for me...

iCal entries found with Spotlight only go to today's date for me, too. I thought it seemed funny.
