Why doesn't command-control-D work for me?
Let's list the steps clearly:

1. Open a webpage on Safari. Macrumors will do.
2. Just move the mouse over some text, but do not highlight any text.
3. Press CTRL-APPLE-D, then release the D after a second, but keep holding down CTRL and APPLE.
4. Move the mouse.

One thing I've discovered - Tiger seemed to me to be slightly paler than Panther, so I went to display settings to calibrate my display. Clicking on Calibrate gets me the error:

Can not calibrate the display
The factory profile for the display could not be found

Can anyone else replicate this?

(BTW: think this is my first post, unless I did one a while ago when I first signed up for this username. So, hi!)

I can't replicate it (that is, I don't know what causes the problem). But I have the same problem. A reboot takes care of it....until it creeps in again.

I'm able to get it work on my iBook, but it refuses to work on my iMac. In Safari, pressing the buttons just gets a "display a menu" in the status bar.

Edit: Never mind, a restart of Safari fixed the problem.

Why does it only work in Safari? Why not in Word '04? That's Cocoa, isn't it?

But did you try "Chains and Whips"? :D

Yep, and I was thankfully (or shamefully) clean. This one concerns me though:

Hmmm...dunno. But if you look in the context menu for a word when it's highlit in Word, you'll see that it already had a similar feature. :)

It works in Keynote, Pages, TextEdit, Safari, iCal, Mail, Address Book, and probably all other Apple Apps.

It does not work in MS Office, Adobe InDesign CS, Firefox, and probably many other non-Apple apps.

Why?

Well, InDesign traps the Option and other modifier keys for its own purposes. I suspect Word is doing the same thing.

The place is https://bugreport.apple.com - you need to register for the free developer account first.

Another Bug:

In Quicktime 7 the Help item appears twice on the top of the screen.

This is actually a different problem. I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that you have the DivX codec installed. Right ? ;-)

If you uninstall the codec it will fix the problem. I reported to the DivX web site. Here is another funny behavior. Start a movie and minimize it to the Dock. The only way to maximize the window back it to do it by selecting the "Window" menu and picking the window by name.

Boy, are you in trouble! :D

I'm clean as a whistle:

Try using double quotes around Sex Toys to specify a literal.

For instance:
1. Type Sex Toys and see the result
2. Then type Sex Toys" with one quote and you should see the same results.
3. Then wrap Sex Toys in double quotes "Sex Toys" then you might not see anything.

I believe that Spotlight is smart enough to specify literals with double quotes like Google.

Where Sex Toys is looking for the words Sex or Toys, "Sex Toys" is looking for the literal.

You can always use that as an excuse. :)

It looks like I will have to empty my Junk folders more often though.

Yeah, I was kind of doing it as a joke, and so I wanted to find something that would come up with hits...most of the ones shown are scientific psychology articles about sexuality and gender experience. :)

But, yes, it's potentially a whole new level of people snooping in your web browser history!

really buggy

The new features in Tiger are awesome, but I think in their rush to get this out the door and hit their release date (and to brag to micro$oft about how far ahead they are) they cut corners on product testing and quality assurance. There are a ton of odd bugs that need to be addressed, that could have easily been noticed through testing. Also there are many third party vendors who's software will not work (Cisco VPN client, for example). That's annoying... apparently Cisco and Apple knew about it well before the release date.

One thing I noticed is that sometimes Safari will display a "Page not found" error, but then when I hit reload the page comes up. This never happened in Panther. It's pretty annoying, especially when doing financial stuff on the web. Do I need to use EI or Mozilla just in case during ssl sessions?

automator has two help items for me, the first one is the actual help menu while the second one just opens a blank white screen. other than that, i really haven't found anything else.

Installing Widgets

How come when I install a widget I have to use killall dock in terminal for the widget to appear in the tray in dashboard?

Other users and the Apple website say it should just install.

Problems with Tiger

I've just installed Tiger in my iBook G4 1.2Ghz 512RAM. So far this is what has happened:

- had to find a new international keyboard layout (I had the Rainer Brockerhoff). Took me almos most 3 hours to find one that worked in Tiger

- tried but failed to fix a faulty widget - international clock - which "came" without the DONE button. I used pacifist to re-install it but to no avail.

- iScroll 2 does not work anymore.

- the hot keys in SnapzPro X do not work anymore. Repaired permissions, deleted preferences but so far I have not been able to invoke it using SHIFT+command+3.

- my computer seems to be running faster and the weather forecast widget is a winner.

In a word, still have mixed feelings about this new feline.

For US users, at least, there's a modified version of the Doppler widget, that seems to be even better here, but it seems to keep reverting back to the Atlantic Northeast region of the US. But the modded version lets you click it to get a giant (about 800x600 I think) doppler image. :) I've found both the weather widget and the doppler widget to be really nice together. :D

Mine does...

Did this have to be enabled somehow (I can't remember)?

I see that the "hide" feature for apps no longer dims the dock icon. Why is this, we man never know. Rush job?

1. Create a folder called Widgets in your username/Library folder.
2. Copy the new widgets there. You're done.

Yeah, smart groups in Addressbook do not show up in iSync's Contact list thing

Slightly off topic...

...the Cocoa dictionary lookup for Safari, etc. is totally cool...is it just available in English or are other versions of the dictionary lurking somewhere on the install DVD?

Thanks.

Just a couple things off the top of my head:

1. Dashboard address book has serious problems delivering information to Mapquest via Safari

2. Not very specific, but Safari seems generally a lot more unstable and prone to crashes

3. Those "Smart Mailboxes" in Mail seem pretty useless and not very customizeable. Creating regular mailboxes and determining their content by "Rules" seems a lot more efficient.

4. Spotlight's indexing doesn't seem to pick up the comments I have added to photos in iPhoto, e.g. notes about the people that appear in pictures. I've noticed that "Get Info" on any item reveals "Spotlight Comments," but I think this is a nuisance. Who has time to scour their HD adding comments to all their files so that Spotlight can find them more efficiently?

but beyond all that, I'm actually pretty impressed.

iCal Chopped Off at Top

anyone notice that the top of iCal in week or day view is chopped off so you cant see the all day items?

is this a tiger bug or just me doing something wrong?

ive sized the window correctly as far as i can tell etc.

anyone confirm?

Cannot "Register this computer" with .Mac Sync

I am unable to sync anything via my .mac account. I have tried umpteen times to open System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced > "Register this computer" and it never registers my computer! Unregistered, it won't sync.

I have tried this on both my iMac and iBook, and both have the same exact problem. I have tried logging out and in again. I have tried restarting. I have tried going to System Preferences > Sharing > "Computer name" and changing the name of the computer to something other that what I used to have it registered under. I have tried repairing permissions. I have tried typing permutations of "mac", "sync", and "register" in every search engine I can think of and every Mac user Web site, and nothing! I cannot find another person that is experiencing this problem. I can't believe I'm alone in this, though!

Oh, and of course I searched the Apple Support, Discussions, etc. and the system is down.

Anyone know what the problem and solution is?
