The screenshots are nice, but most Tiger screenshots have only shown the end-user stuff so far. I'd be intrested in changes in Xcode, new elements in InterfaceBuilder and whatever else is new in the Developer Tools.

I believe it is option-command-space

I don't know if that's what you wanted to know, but seems like different keystrokes for language and spotlight. Personally I use Quicksilver with command-space and I switch between keyboard languages with option-command-space :)

Hm, interesting. I actually just was using command-space to switch between two languages, but it seems like the option-command-space switches between all the languages. Thanks!

Where did Apple publish the price for Tiger?

They haven't, but I believe that they'll keep the same $129 price tag, but I see perfect reasoning for a $149 or $169 price because of the amount of new features. However, purchasers of the Mac mini will not especially like to upgrade to Tiger if it carries a higher price than normal, imo.

Well, my guess is it will probably still cost $129 although I wouldn't rule out $149 either. Pricing it well above $149 would only make people hold off who otherwise would upgrade immediately. The argument Apple will raise Tiger's Retail price b/c they did so with iLife 05, too is not valid. The difference of $30 can mostly be attributed to the fact that for the first time using iDVD's MPEG 2 encoder is not tied to a SuperDrive anymore. Which means you pay the licence fees for the encoder with the price of the software. Secondly, iWork is also priced at $79. For 79 bucks you get Keynote, which was $99 as standalone version, if I remember correctly, plus Pages. So there's no way to say Apple is in a process of raising prices for their software.

But, yes I agree with rendezvouscp that any price in the range of $129-169 is reasonable and worth it in light of all those new and updated features Tiger offers. This is not just a Service Pack for Panther. Furthermore those still running Jaguar might even be more tempted to upgrade.

I would actually hope that the dictionary data would be stored locally, so you can access it when you're offline. (Travelling and writing with a powerbook, for example.) And it would probly be faster accessing that information locally. It looks like it does live searches as you type; i think that would be difficult to do if it was drawing data in real time from a remote data source.

Remember that they could use Software Update occasionally to keep the dictionary content up to date.

This looks like a custom version of what you already get in any text field in Panther when pressing F5, eg like this in TextEdit.

Maybe with Apple releasing a number of priced-lower-than-expected products of late (Mac mini, iPod Shuffle, iWork), they will do the same with Tiger. $99, anyone?

I think we'd all love it, but no way. If anything, I'm betting on the same or a tad bit more expensive. Sadly ;). I don't mind paying a premium for Apple OS software like Tiger though. It really revolutionizes the way I work.

I really like that

Apple ould get more and more people on their side if they got some more "lowered priced products" on the market

Now that would be cool. But for one of the biggest updates in Mac OS History, it is unlikely that they'll lower the price.

i'm just going to say "oooooooooooh"

cant wait for tiger to be released, although not liking all these mentions of AOL, both in rumor stuff, builds coming out (AOL Installer???) etc. yuk.

I'm afraid that's just wishful thinking. Unlike Mac mini and iPod shuffle, the idea behind Tiger is not to attract first time customers. In fact, some potential switcher who know about Tiger might wait a bit longer for their first Mac in order to get Tiger for free. Of course, it would be a nice treat by Apple to sell Tiger for $99 but I don't think it's going to happen. Like I said in earlier post, if you want Tiger start saving now :) ( I will)

can someone explain to me what the strategies are behind "sneak previewing" tiger nearly a year early? doesn't that give the pc guys a competitive edge? I mean rumors are all well and good but obviously this guy could lose his job (and for good reason) just so we can oggle an upcoming release?

Here's an excellent tool I use for every open directory I come across. It's a javascript. Make a bookmark and edit it by pasting the code in place of the address. Then when you're looking at an open directory of image links, load the bookmark. I have gotten this to work with Safari and Internet Explorer but not Firefox.

Here's the code: (snip)

I hope everyone can see that whole thing.

Thanks for the javascript... works great and a nice tool.

I, too, doubt they will lower the price, but I wouldn't go so far to say that Tiger is one of the biggest updates in Mac OS history. It's significant, definitely, but no more than Panther was over Jaguar, or Jaguar over 10.1 in many respects, just on a slightly larger scale. Now OS9 to OSX - now that was one of the biggest updates in Mac OS history.

some really good screanshots posted. Looking forward to Tiger. Will have to get the family pack again and get all the computers updated.

Tiger users

I had read something somewhere sometime (wow, indefinite!) that suggested that with Tiger users would become independent of the computers, that users would be able to remote login.

That is to say, for example, in our household we have four Macs and five users. The users would be able to sit down at any of the machines and log in as themselves having their home data available as if it were on that machine no matter which machine they were actually sitting at.

Has anyone heard about this? Is it true?

I've been running 10.2.8 on my G3 with Shapeshifter, Cleardock and Mighty Mouse.
So these screen shots are virtually the same as what I see
in my system.

Of course there are new features in Tiger, but the overall look seems
nearly identical.

Quicktime Rgistration

I noticed that they blurred out all of the names and identities on their machine but not the registration code for QuickTime... Try it and see for yourself....

it's so developers can take advantage of the technologies in the OS. Microsoft does it too, you can get a beta of longhorn right now. Posting screenshots of the OS is something those same developers or pirates do so they feel special (don't get me wrong I like the SS and wish there were more).

It would hurt Apple more if software developers didn't see the OS a year in advance because when 10.4 rolled out and your favorite app didn't work, it would reflect badly on Apple most of the time.

And as far as posting SS, it violates his nondisclosure agreement and based on the NDA, appropriate action can be taken like losing his adc account or being fined. I don't know exactly what Apple can do.

quicktime pro serial # in screenshot

I don't know if anyone has noticed but there is a Quicktime Pro serial number up on those screenshots. Whoever took the screenshots failed to blur it out as was done to other private information.

EDIT: Yes, I should have read the thread before posting this. Appologies.EDIT
