Tiger Build 8A351 Sceenshots

Does the Spotlight blue color remind anyone else of windows XP?
It just looks like a start button in the corner of the menu bar.

I have to say I like the Spotlight icon and how the top right corner of the menu bar was all blue at WWDC than how they changed it now to the blue circle... just a stupid minor preference.

Parental Controls now include the new Dictionary & Thesaurus.

Does this mean that WITHOUT parental controls turned on I'd be able to search for 20 synonyms for what boys and girls who love each other very much do in the privacy of their bedrooms?!

Come to think of it, the screenshot poster did a search for "ABBA" so maybe she is a girl! Or at least has never done the synonym above. We do know that he/she is in the UK, likes pop music, and sent their IP address to Apple on numerous occasions. Hmm.

OK. I don't think Dictionary.app is a full dictionary, I think it's just an interface for the system-wide dictionary... i doubt it contains definitions or pronunciations, just a list of words (the point being you can now customize the dictionary more easily). It's not like they're adding a dictionary, just letting users see the one that the computer uses. Thus the widgets for dictionary.com and thesaurus.com make sense, they include definitions, etc.

I hope they make a widget for urbandictionary.com...

I share your "stupid minor preference." :p

Now it's like they mirrored the normal Aqua Apple to the upper-right corner, and turned it into a Spotlight icon. Eh.

The Apple icon looks "flatter" in these screencapts too, albeit brighter, and less 3-D than the current one.

MacShrine always put ABBA in their screenshots, strange tradition :)

i'm trying to be excited about this but i can't.
Tiger looks the same as Jaguar.

btw, everyone is going to complain about how SLOW the first version of Tiger is, mark my words.

Why fix it if it aint broke? ;) It's already visually stunning, no need to mess with how it looks in my opinion..

Not impressed by Spotlight ?

For people moaning about the original site exceeding its bandwidth...
READ THE THREAD. THERE ARE MIRRORS!

Would be nice for the original poster to add the mirrors, or even maybe the mods. We get the message. Read the thread too.

Here's an excellent tool I use for every open directory I come across. It's a javascript. Make a bookmark and edit it by pasting the code in place of the address. Then when you're looking at an open directory of image links, load the bookmark. I have gotten this to work with Safari and Internet Explorer but not Firefox.

Here's the code:

[long javascript snipped]

I hope everyone can see that whole thing.

man, that is the first really useful bookmarklet i've come across. awesome.

No Price from Apple Yet.

Where did Apple publish the price for Tiger?

They haven't and the person who posted the firm $129.00 price is just guessing.

In fact, don't be surprised if Apple raises the price this time. I remember SJ saying something like "over 100 new features for $129.00 dollars" refering to Panther vs Jaguar when it first came out.
This time SJ said "Tiger, with more than 200 new features". So you do the math!

Also Apple raised the price of iLife, was $50.00 for '04, now $79.00 for '05.

My guess for Tiger is $149.99.

Of course thats only my opinion, I may be wrong!

That is my thinking too. Though my reasons have nothing to do with the number of features. It has more to do with the iPod becoming a mature product. Apple will soon feel pressure to keep up the gross sales $, and the iPod will not carry that long term.

with the whole abba - otto thing, most of the time when i'm looking for something that i don't know where it is, i usually don't know what exactly it's called either. i just think it's nice that spotlight is still working even when all i have to give it is "i think it's called something like this" and the abba-otto thing is just an interesting indicator of what else could be going on in there. i wouldn't be a surprised if there was a way to control the relevence level so that it displays only exact instances of what's in the search field, which in my opinion would be kind of dumb to limit something that is designed to make relational connections more easy to do. but yeah maybe the word was in the pdf i dunno. maybe i'm stretching it.

i'll be curious to see what microsoft's take of it will be in about 10 years.

Hey, when does fiscal quarter 2 of '05 end?

Well Q1 ended like on Dec 25th or somewhere near there. But is Apple talking fiscal year or calendar year when they talk of the Tiger release?

Tiger Orders

I wondering when Apple will begin taking orders (pre-orders is just a stupid word). I'm itching to have my name on a copy already. Dang it, Apple, hurry the freak up.

Personally, I think two things may happen this Tuesday: 1) Orders for Tiger (It is the 25th, the closest day the original anniversary of Mac OS X public beta AND it would alot 60-days for consumers to place their orders, 2) PM revisions.

i dunno whenever i see it written Q1, Q2 etc i always think of the fiscal calendar, and i'm recalling always seeing the release date listed as Q2, though that may be an abbreviation common to both calendars.

My guess is that Tiger will cost $129, like Panther, because people will expect it to. If Apple uses consistent prices for each Mac OS X version, resistance by purchasers will be lowered. If the prices vary, people will start thinking harder about which features are worth a certain price. If all new versions cost $129, purchases will be more automatic. It's a subtle thing, but it might make a difference.

I won't be jumping into Tiger until I get a G5 I can fully use the OS with (64 bit).

You'll also need more than 4 gigs of RAM to take advantage of the 64-bit addressing in tiger. Plus you'll need applications written to take advantage of it (and need more than 4 gigs of RAM in their processes).

64-bit IMO is much ado about nothing - unless you're into scientific or hardcore image editting computing. But there is so much other goodness in Tiger that I'll def be upgrading to it.

The screenshots look a bit lackluster don't they?
I mean, when I look at them, they don't give me the shivers and make me think, wow what a cool update.

So far they have introduced some nice funtionality... the main one being this Spotlight but it feels like Tiger is missing some wow factor.

Spotlight doesn't seem like a WOW inducing feature. I know that currently I only search my computer extremely rarely... perhaps 2 - 4 times a year?

That said, I guess it's the first step in building "customer success". What I mean by that is, it allows users to achieve their goal (in this case, looking for a particular file or reference) with minimal steps. Just type and BOOM(tm), your result is delivered to you on a silver (well actually blue-accented) platter.
