You don't. The people who used old-fashioned candy-bar and flip-phones didn't NEED to upgrade to an iPhone 3G (or later) just to run some apps. One could make phone calls just fine on those older mobile phones. But many millions of people did upgrade to a newer iPhone; and iOS apps became a multi-billion dollar business. Now it's tvOS's turn.
Not at all a fair comparison
The iPhone was a leapfrog over old flip phones. Multitouch, apps, new methods of input, sensors, computational power. All leapfrogs in technology.

In contrast, Apple TV 3 is not a "flip phone" when compared to the "iPhone" that is the Apple TV 4

Anyway, I wasn't bemoaning the product. Obviously you guys can buy it if you want it.. I was just wondering if there's any use-case scenario that I'm missing out on if I don't get this new box
Sounds like, from your responses, the only thing is right now: apps and Siri

I can live with that for now

Am I the only one who wants to browse through their iCloud Photos on the new Apple TV? I'm disappointed that the ATV 3 still can't do it.

So I just got a 4K TV and I never really looked until now...this thing doesn't do 4K?

Of course it doesn't, New Apple TV 2 will!
I recently bought an LG 4K OLED and will be getting an AppleTV on day-0. Cause I would have bought it with or without 4K. it was not part of the decision.

That's indeed quite annoying

Maybe I'm trying to understand the product more..? Given that this is.. An apple products forum?

I get what your saying..it didn't come across as a question but rather a statement.

It's like any product I guess. If what you have works fine then stick with it. Everyone's use and situation is different so it makes it hard to pinpoint what works for some and not for others .. I can see the person who just uses to to stream Netflix not being interested in it. If you've cut the cord ( As I have) and use it as your primary device then there might be a lot of welcomed features. Maybe not one killer feature but a lot of smaller ones that makes using the device better.

I think I'll get one. Just can't decide between 32 or 64.

I think I'll put some games on there, but it won't be a lot. Primarily it will be for streaming movies & shows.

Seems like the 32 will be fine, but still on the fence.

Can you elaborate? I have no problem operating Siri in english and all my Apple devices are set to use english as the system language (but with finnish keyboard). But I live in Finland and Siri does not support finnish. Are you saying I would need to order Apple TV from outside Finland if I want a version with the Siri remote?

Sorry too tired to go through the whole thread so not sure if someone answered already. Finn here too and I've played with the new ATV. Siri works only with US (or the other supported language) accounts. So if I used Finnish account it automatically disables it. Logging to US account enables it. Language settings don't matter. Extremely annoying.

I am much more disappointed by the lack of an optical output for audio than the lack of 4K. My gorgeous 4K TV will continue to ba starved, but the 2 channel audio side is much more important to me.

Glad I am not alone here! I do not have a 4K TV (shamefully I must say), but I have a nice Denon Amplifier, that is very good at what it does, and I am upset I can not just simply input my Apple TV directly into my Amp. I think I have found a solution, but it is just more cost and hassle I didn't want to deal with.

I have ATV 3rd gen. The only thing I am looking forward in the new Apple TV is the way the app authentication is handled. In the current form, I am sick and tired to re-authenticating about 20 apps every 2-3 weeks cause they no longer stay authenticated. This is especially frustrating when kids want to for instance watch disney in the middle of the day and I am at work and the app is no longer authenticated.

I also recently bought a Lg 4k OLED tv also. The apple tv not having 4k is not that important as I will end up upgrading again once one comes out with a 4k and then give the old one to a family member.

Optical is outdated. Just upgrade to a receiver with HDMI. I also had a receiver that had no hdmi but I was fed up with having to look for devices with optical so went with a receiver with HDMI.

The big reason here is "unofficial" content apps. If all you do is use the included channels to watch content, and you're fine with that, no need to upgrade. If you want the Apple TV to be able to act as a more generic "media center", and access content in different formats and places, Apps should cover that on the new one. Ironically the new Apple TV will allow a lot more ways to access content (movies, music) outside of Apple's ecosystem. (Ignoring games and such since you don't seem interested).

I have a PS4 and XBOne, if I want to play games I'll use that. Other channels I can access on every connected device I have game consoles, tivo, smart tv, etc. So the fact that Apple is finally allowing other "Apps" is too little too late. Not to mention where was it said that most TV Apps wouldn't work on the current gen Atvs? About the only thing missing that I would really want is Vudu and Amazon Prime - but again I already have access to my other devices.

The only reason I have an Atv really is because I have over 400 iTunes movies, a heck of a lot of iTunes TV Shows and I prefer the ATV to Plex to manage my large media library. I'm not trying to rag on the ATV, I just don't see a compelling reason to spend another $400 and "throw away" my perfectly fine current boxes.

Yes! This is called "post-purchase rationalization" which is a cognitive bias. It's very similar to "confirmation bias." We are all susceptible to it, and probably suffer from its effects all the time - particularly in this Apple-forum. Surely my decision to buy the ATV4 is highly influenced by my brand-loyalty to Apple and my emotions somewhat. However, it seems some folks suffer from it more than others, and this 4k crowd is a prime example.

WTH are you talking about? People bought 4K TVs because it is better tech and they could really tell the difference. Just because you all use "big words" to talk down to people doesn't mean you know what you are talking about. For the record, I don't have a 4k tv, just because I already have an 60 inch HDTV, but yes, I can see the difference and there's nothing wrong with wanting more content and expecting new TV streaming devices to start supporting it.

I still can't decide between 32 or 64 GB, but excited for Monday!!

Always get more storage than you think you need.

I didn't say 4k isn't better. Better doesn't mean it's a standard that will be adopted or that the purchase was well timed. Those 480i HDTVs before HDMI, the ones that had only only composite inputs, those were also better back then. And a whole bunch of suckers bought them.

Can someone with a 4K TV tell me how well the upscaling tech works? I have yet to see a real demo of this in action and does the upscaling work on digital content like iTunes movies or Netflix streams, etc. Or does it only work with physical media like Blu-ray players?

Neat... now we can all talk to out TV's. Next step, for our TV's to talk back to us. (probably don't want that)

Just did that and it says:

Siri, play the song be yourself.

Starting face time with Eileen Pierce mobile

I have tried pausing, saying things slowly, giving the band with the songs , being on wifi
lte , it just doesn't do it for me.

Just assume I am creative enough to word things in different ways.
In my case it doesn't matter what I say.

Stop lying.

Stop lying.

Haha.
Why would I make that up? I even had a discussion with another post who has the same experience
trying to figure out if it is my accent, which is actually not very strong.

Give me a phrase to ask and I'll post a screen shot.

My accent is also pretty bad. Can't imagine there's worse but I still got this:

+1

The TV industry has been scrambling to find a way to get you to buy a new TV.

1. Smart TV flop
2. 3D TV flop
3. Curved screen flop
4. 4K... I believe it will take off, but it will be a log ways away, thats why I don't plan on rushing out to buy a new 4K TV either, until there are movies to watch on them.

We are a long ways away from having 4K adopted widely. Directv, Dish, Timewarner, Cox etc do not even broadcast in 1080p. They broadcast in 1080i. Only for certain PPV can you get 1080p. I am still amazed at the number of channels on DirecTV that are still 480i.There will most likely never be a media player that is 4k either.

So when Apple decided to release the new ATV4 without 4K, it did not phase me for one sec. Instead I hope that I will be able to get rid of DirecTV altogether.

While speaking at tonight's WSJDLive conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the new Apple TV will begin shipping next week. Apple will begin taking orders for the new set-top box on Monday, October 26 with shipments beginning at the end of the week.

The new Apple TV, which Cook also said is the "foundation" for a new type of TV experience, features an A8 processor and either 32 or 64 GB of storage. It also has support for a full App Store, which Apple says will help "modernize" the "linear TV" experience that most consumers are familiar with. The new Apple TV also comes with the brand new Siri Remote, which allows users to use Siri to easily sort and find their favorite TV shows and movies.

The new fourth-generation Apple TV will be available for $149 with 32 GB of storage and $199 with 64 GB of storage.

73% of the offered channels are " US ONLY " , Siri is " US ONLY " And still you have to pay 200% more for "more of the same" so stick with the "olde" modell, nothing new on the new one, besides another remote.

My Sony late 2014 Bravia 4K TV upscales everything - And it works pretty well imho. Even DVDs look great. Looks better than the same content on my 1080P Samsung TV.

I just don't get it
I watch Netflix and rent iTunes movies and use AirPlay and iCloud music library for music
Why would I need or even just 'want' to upgrade to this?
Especially since the old perfectly capable model is now only just $69

Oh but I am ready! Eagerly waiting for this one to arrive at my front door. Never been so excited of Apple product since a new 5k iMac. My current ATV is like 4 years old, and I use it everyday - the only other Apple product I use so often besides iPhone. I can't even imagine now what my TV for without ATV. And with that price, it's really no brainer. I say, go and get it.

Source? Siri even works in Thailand, let alone all other English speaking countries. And with the Apps, it shouldn't matter which country you are from. It's 100% contents freely available for everyone.
