Yes and no. And Yes. The early reports suggested a different remote. Now it "looks" like the same, but I'll believe it when I see it. Besides, the big fail lies in that Siri is such a huge selling point (besides apps) but still only 10% of the countries will have it on release.
I'm in one of the tiny number of countries (a little place called the United States of America) that will support Siri on release, so its a big win for me. I feel as though I have won the lottery!

The new Apple TV is currently running tvOS 9.0 for developers. 9.1 will likely be released shortly after for iOS users.
How can that be? tvOS is a brand new OS. There hasn't been 8 releases before this, it's the first one. Maybe with the beta's they are calling it that because it is in some part based off of iOS? I'm guessing that when the boxes come to us next week we'll see tvOS 1.0 on them.

I can't wait to watch movies in 4K on an ATV!!!!!!!! Oh wait, that's why I ordered a Fire TV. :)
Nice troll buried in here, hehe. I got a Fire TV of 4K, oh wait there is no 4K content!

App Store? I guess...Siri remote? Sure,it's there. I just want it for the new interface and overall speed plus the live screensavers. As much as I use the ATV in my family room,I welcome the new interface. I have a dedicated laptop and 4tb of (iTunes) content to stream to my Apple TV's. I currently have 3 ATV's in my house and this will be the 4th.

We watch movies and tv shows on all 3 units all the time. I also have a Logitech harmony elite remote to control everything,so I'll barely use the Siri remote.

We all have our different reasons for why we may purchase the new ATV. Mine aren't probably a big deal to anyone but me,but enough to justify my purchase.

Can't wait for the new menu.

As discovered by 9to5mac the Siri functionality will only be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Spain, UK and the US. And only in those countries five languages.

For the rest the Siri button on the, then called "Apple TV Remote", will be a search icon. But on Apples Swedish Page the image still shows a Siri icon, but the description of the button says "Search" instead of "Siri". So who knows...

WTF?! It's like they are deliberately doing everything possible to get me to NOT buy tje damn thing. I live in Finland, my phone is set to use english as the system language (for typing I alternate between finnish and russian keyboards) and I regularly use Siri in english. Being able to control this thing via Siri was one of the main selling points for me. No Siri = no sale.

iMac.

Before you ask, yes I do own the previous 3 Apple remotes. Black, White and Alu. I do want this 4th one, for no other real reason than I want it. And I will use it. I use the alu one quite a bit actually. With itunes and other things from a distance.

I wonder if the Touch controls on the remote will work on other devices?

Will definitely be ordering this Monday, I don't have a 4K TV and don't plan on getting one for years so I don't care about this not having 4K

hopefully Vudu gets added to this

Those connectors on the whole are used across the industry. I’m willing to bet that a few connectors has a smaller enviromental impact than binned/recycled logic boards. My company bins boards all the time and it’s not for the reasons you cited for virtual Tim above.
For a company, it’s because it’s quicker, cheaper and a lot easier to replace rather than repair.
For a customer, it’s because you get speed and the piece of mind that a new one has fixed your problem, (when sometimes is hasn’t).
Do the vast majority of Apple repairs on older equipment actually go back to Apple?

Press him on these, if you don’t like the answer fine, you have an amicable disagreement but at least he’s addressed it. Also higher failure rate doesn’t mean high failure rate.

You may be right on whether a few connectors may or may not outweigh binned circuit boards. It's hard for either of us to know without hard statistics. You're optimistic Tim's answer would be in line with yours, I'm optimistic of the opposite.

Would it take the materials in a hundred connectors to equal the environmental impact of a complete main logic board? Perhaps. It then comes down to how many connectors are eliminated across all units vs. the increase in the number of circuit boards binned as a result of eliminating those connectors on the failed units. Apple has the numbers, neither of us do. However, Apple would be a very poorly run company if it failed to do that analysis on anything less than a constant basis. So, what do Apple's practices tell us?

The total economic cost of these changes embraces far more than repair costs. Reducing the number of connectors reduces the manufacturing cost, which reduces the selling price or offsets the cost of new components and features, all of which are supposed to result in greater sales. Are those gains offset by increases in repair cost, or are there reduced repair costs as well? It's a good question, with no obvious answer.

The cost of warranty repair (and the occasional cost of post-warranty repair extensions) is built into the selling price, and longer-term repair costs are built into the price of AppleCare... so again, to operate profitably, Apple has to be intimately aware of these costs.

Still, the question for me focuses more on whether long-term reliability is significantly aided. Does,on average, reducing the number of connectors add one month to the life of a MacBook, or a full year? If it added, say, 15% to the useful life of the device, the number of entire MacBooks "saved" from landfill over the long haul can be huge. The fact that individual repairs may be more costly when they are required has less to do with environmental impact or actuarial costs and more to do with equity - the cost falls more heavily on the (relative) few who have to pay. For consumers, that looms large. Organizations with large number of units in service are more likely to benefit.

Regardless, the trend, industry-wide, is always in the favor of greater large scale integration.

To me the key to the new model working is the apps. As a basic media player I don't think it justifies the price BUT as soon the apps start coming in I can see it gaining in value quickly

What kind of apps are you looking forward to see on an Apple TV? Genuinely curious.

I don't get this. Siri is a time saver when you know how to use it. Why are you intentionally trying not to use it right? Not everything works the way YOU want it to work.

You're being lazy. You understand that Siri can't understand certain things, so find ways to rephrase it so siri gets it. Maybe something like 'Siri, play the song be yourself.' then Siri will get it. Right now Siri isn't perfect, but you can make it work. It's not too hard.

Just did that and it says:

Siri, play the song be yourself.

Starting face time with Eileen Pierce mobile

I have tried pausing, saying things slowly, giving the band with the songs , being on wifi
lte , it just doesn't do it for me.

Just assume I am creative enough to word things in different ways.
In my case it doesn't matter what I say.

I never get this way of questioning new products. Should new products not exist on this planet because you as a person do not see a need for it? Alternatively, does every Apple product NEED to adhere to your personal requirements and do you NEED to buy each and every Apple product?
Maybe I'm trying to understand the product more..? Given that this is.. An apple products forum?

There is actually some nice 4K content available for streaming already. Netflix has some of its excellent original series such as House of Cards and Daredevil, as well as 3rd party movies (e.g. Philadelphia) and TV shows (e.g. Breaking Bad). Similarly Amazon has e.g. Orphan Black, Mozart in the Jungle, as well as a handful of movies. It's not a lot yet, but what's there looks excellent.

While those shows and movies/documentaries may be "nice", it's still a very limited selection. It's going to be quite a long time before 4K content matches Full HD content in availability.

True, but I don't need it to match all the existing HD content. A decent selection of new content would easily be worth it. I watched some of the Daredevil episodes in 4K and was impressed by the image quality. There is really no excuse for Apple not to support this, especially given that the Amazon and Roku boxes have that capability and even cost less.

CBS just landed on apple tv for $5.99/Month - they said " live tv steaming in select markets where they own an over the air station" - i wonder how you figure that out - although i'm in nyc so i'm sure they do. I am sooooooooo close to cord cutting!!!!
CBS All Access also includes live TV streaming in select major markets, where the network owns and operates the over-the-air station.

WHAT movies??? Where? "um... um... gimme a minute... no maybe an hour.... can I get back to you?"

The selection is incredibly limited right now. And the majority of the USA still watches cable. Look how many years it took for 1080p broadcast television. Unless they're watching the limited programming available outside of cable, cable viewers who bought one simply wasted their money because all they're watching is 1080p television on their "new" 4K tv.

Because it would be confusing to have iOS on 9 while tvOS is way back at 1.0. This is common to match things even if tvOS is new. It's still based on iOS version 9. It's not as if they created it from scratch.

I'm willing to bet money it'll be called tvOS 9 when released.

Couldn't be more relatable. But I am ready to make this purchase. Hopefully it will be my last apple purchase for the year, but I doubt it. lol

Don't sell yourself short here, there are plenty of days still left in the year for a random Apple purchase. ;-)

I've been eagerly awaiting this release for a long time, but in the end I ordered a Roku 4 instead. I loved the ATV2 and 3, but the Roku 4 has Amazon Instant Video (along with all the apps my family uses), and it doesn't appear the ATV will get that access. If it does, I might return, but I'm looking forward to trying something new.

Tim - We save resources by eliminating extra connectors from every unit we make - millions of connectors, gold-plated contacts, etc. While the repair depot may swap-out an entire logic board for the sake of a fast turnaround, that logic board will be repaired... When and if we bin a board or component, it goes into recycling, not the landfill.
News - Still, soldered components greatly reduce the possibility of do-it-yourself repairs...
Tim - Our studies show a small minority did their own repairs when these components were socketed, while socketed and conectorized components have a higher failure rate. What price should the masses pay for the sake of the DIYers? I haven't had to carry an iMac to the Genius Bar myself, but I can't imagine it's a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I enjoy watching people awkwardly carrying their iMac through the mall.

Which by the way works nicely.

I just don't get it
I watch Netflix and rent iTunes movies and use AirPlay and iCloud music library for music
Why would I need or even just 'want' to upgrade to this?

You don't. The people who used old-fashioned candy-bar and flip-phones didn't NEED to upgrade to an iPhone 3G (or later) just to run some apps. One could make phone calls just fine on those older mobile phones. But many millions of people did upgrade to a newer iPhone; and iOS apps became a multi-billion dollar business. Now it's tvOS's turn.
