They all do it, although Google gives you some value back. For example, I get alerts from time to time saying "found a new restaurant you might like..." and things like that. They're brilliant!
Is it true that Pixel requires connection to their servers just to produce the bokeh effect? That might not be an issue in most areas but in remote areas with poor coverage, that would be unfortunate.

So I've heard, but unless it's markedly better, it's all relative. It also helps to be in the right hands. My mom would take a terrible picture on any smartphone.
That's the point of iPhone (and any flagship smartphone) You don't need to have any skills to get a decent picture quickly. If you spend more time in composing, lighting and post processing of course you'll get better results but if you require better results, a dedicated camera is always going to win out anyway.

I can't decide if you're mocking, or really don't recognize that those are ads.
I cannot tell if they are sincere or not but valuable info is still valuable to some people even if they are being targeted for ad revenue exchange.

Slightly off topic but is he promoting some type of scam? I don't use twitter at all so I am not familiar with these "@" symbols everywhere
Look closer. It's not Tim Cook's Twitter. It took me a few seconds also.

Why does the bokeh look so weird? Isn't the iPhone supposed to have like f/1.8 aperture or something?
The bokeh is artificial so it has nothing to do with f-stop.

Now I know what this day that bizarrely shows up on my US calendar is. Maybe this is Cook’s way of legitimizing this bizarre decision to include days that aren’t in fact US holidays.
It shows up on your US calender because, and this may blow your mind, there are US born religious Hindus in the US. Calenders cater for everyone.

what's with that horrible cut out in the first image. It looks like some kid just learning photoshop. Surely this image is a troll to make that black background look Apple is so proud of bad.
It's all relative. It would take the best pro about 30 seconds to produce this mask (assuming they have PS and a laptop handy) and it took about 2 seconds to snap, process and post this image. And from all accounts, I haven't heard any glowing reviews of the Pixel's or Galaxy's ability to produce realistic looking masks either.

This holiday showed up in the US Holidays calendar this year. I have never heard of it honestly thought it was a typo of some sort in the database.

I have learned something today...

Ha, I noticed the same thing. But I know what Holi is.

Um, nothing too special here. Could have been shot on any number of phones.

Yeah, like this photo is going to thrill the Indian population and move the needle on market share. Not.
It's not about seeing this particular photo. Not everything is as simple as A+B=C. Pay attention. It shows you Cook/Apple are very mindful of India. They could have ignored Holi.

They talk about India a lot on their earnings calls.

So not a fan of the effect but this is the only way phone cameras will be able to compete with dSLR.... with AI effects.

I'm not a fan of the effects, either, but as a DSLR owner, I have to say that this is the first "Shot on iPhone" series that actually makes sense. There's a Holi festival at Stanford every year (though the date is different—theirs is a month from now), and the one thing that camera enthusiasts all say about it is this: DO NOT BRING A DSLR.

The lenses on standalone cameras try their best to be sealed against dust, but the tiny particulate color dust that hangs in the air at Holi has a tendency to get inside anyway. So basically, if you're going to shoot a color festival, you should either bring only lenses that you're planning to throw away or count on a multi-hundred-dollar repair bill for a camera technician to completely disassemble the lenses and clean them meticulously.

Cell phone cameras, being almost entirely composed of fixed optics sealed inside a plastic, glass, or metal box, don't have that problem. You could shoot Holi all day, and all you'd have to do is wipe off the lens a few thousand times. This, right here, is the one truly good use for a cell phone camera beyond the whole "The best camera is the one you have with you" thing.

Stage Light looks so amateurish, it hurts... And Apple celebrates it.... Look at the major halos on the first image.
They are so loosing taste !!!!
[doublepost=1520027620][/doublepost]
that terrible photoshop cutout effect around the top of the first image tho... I mean if thats people's idea of taste... *shrug*

If I had ever delivered a cutout like that no client of mine would have paid me a dime.
This is amateur hour 100%

The iPhone X is the best camera I've ever used in low light. I have no android experience however.

And you wouldn't need to because the best camera you're going to ever use in low light for the foreseeable future isn't going to be found on a smartphone. It's not even close.

How come americans have to be so xenophobic? -asks an American in London. It takes effort to be a xenophobe. Boggles the mind!!!

They're a small minority capitalizing on their moment in the sun. They exist in every society. They're just not as noticable right now.

I wonder how a dSLRs would fare at a Holi festival if it were protected in the kind of sealed case that's used to bring dSLR style cameras underwater on scuba dives.

Oh sure. That's why they use a blonde white woman in one of the photos.

Came here to say this. Pretty sure the calendar is called "US Holidays", not "random holidays for other countries". Seriously, what the **** Apple? If I wanted another country's holidays on my calendar, then I would add those countries.

For many years non-paid cultural/religious holidays that have origins outside the US were at least recognized on most US holiday calendars. St. Patricks day, Valentines, Good Friday and Hanukkah are all examples. Do you want to rid all of these too? or make space for Holi, Diwali and Lunar New Year (all part of the current Apple "US Holiday" calendar)

Of course there are. There are US born citizens from every other country on the earth. However, Holi is not a US holiday. Apple could provide a holiday list from each of the major countries and then we could choose which countries we want to populate our calendars according to the traditions we choose to celebrate in our families.

Yes they better allow us to turn off this foreign holidays. I just checked and they added at least 10 holidays.

Those holidays aren't so foreign because there are a lot of people living here who celebrate them and it even people who don't celebrate them might want to know they're coming up so they might be able to plan accordingly. You own a store that sells some items that are popular at Holi, you'll want to stock up. You have employees that celebrate Holi. They might want the day off.

If that is unacceptable to you, just turn off the US Holidays calendar. Easy enough, yeah?

How often do you or your peers celebrate Eid al-Fitr? That is literally now in the Calender.app.

To be fair.

Google needs data to get machine learning to do the things the iPhone needs two cameras for. Google is notorious for using user data. Here you have a company mining data and the other using hardware to bypass shady dealings. Do no evil my ass!

I bet you never read the TOS of either. In some areas Apple is much worse than google eg Apple will share your data with third as it deems fit, while google will only do that with your permission...

Apple is not the saint you think. And they are very weak on privacy, giving keys to iCloud data to the fascist communist regime in chine. It’s really sad when you think about it....

I’m Fairly confident Apple is not hearing you on an opinionated tech forum. But you can direct your thoughts to them about iOS by contacting them directly. That seems more logical. But my experience is opposite of yours, I don’t have any complaints iOS and it’s running completely fine on my iPhone currently. Granted their are complaints, I wouldn’t sacrifice abandoning iOS in place of the iPhones security and five years of updates. Enjoy your Pixel 2, Which is a nice phone.
What good are 5 years of update given the battery situation, and how more users have gotten wary of updating past 1 to 2 major OS version that came with their phone?

Apple is becoming more and more a SJW playground with Tim and his peers at the rudder... it it’s a game with fire they could easily alienate large parts of their user base if they misstep. Time to sell stocks (not financial advise of course)
