That's the exact debate I'm going through in my head too.

It's a fun debate!
I think the SS looks much better , has a better screen and is worth the extra cash.
But 2 days ago I thought the sport was the way to go !!
Not long to decide now. The time is nearly up!

Yeah haha I keep telling myself to get the Space Gray sport as this is 1st gen and get a more expensive one next gen but I keep looking at the SS.

Don't forget you will be wearing this every day - you need to pick one you'll enjoy wearing, looking at and using, regardless of what generation device it is.

getting two watches - at the extremes: black SS link and gray watch sport - I'll return one, here's hoping the black link watch is as spectacular in person....

Hey guys. Not posted on MR for a long time but been reading this wonderful thread. I was going for the Sports with the black band but now I'm leaning towards the SS with black band.
Is it worth the extra £180.
Who has upgraded (in there head) and what made you decide.

Going through this conundrum.

£180 gets you a sapphire screen, a (subjectively) nicer looking case, a ceramic back, aesthetic compatibility with more straps down the line, and perhaps even perks such as being able to have a personal setup with an employee via video chat.

However, it still doesn't do anything more than the Sport watch does, and the Sport watch will undoubtedly hold its value better in percentage terms if one upgrades down the line.

I'm also a student without much guaranteed regular income, so I'm wondering whether it's wise to spend £180 on just a bit more bling. I could afford it, but not sure whether it's the best allocation of my (scarce!) resources. Though on the flip side, apart from my phone, I haven't bought anything for myself above £30 for the past three years or so.

Agh.

I'm in the exact same boat. Student with relatively low income and while I tell myself I've decided on the space gray sport, I keep looking back at the SS model. I can definitely afford it, but I don't think it's really worth spending the extra $200 on as you said. Especially considering this is a first gen product and I'm not even 100% sure how much I'm going to like it.

I'm likely just going to get the Sport with AppleCare+ so I can get it replaced once it gets too scratched up or something.

EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT

In a completely unexpected development, I've changed my mind.

I was watching the new videos on Apple's site and I noticed two things. First, the classic buckle didn't look that great. Second, the white sports strap looked terrific -- because the screen is black, you get a whole yin/yang thing going on.

Plus, someone on here said you can't go wrong with the SS with sports strap. Worst-case scenario you just buy another strap later when you've actually seen them and you're only £49 worse off than if you'd bought the better strap originally and not bothered with the sports.

I'm DEFINITE on SS and 42mm. It's just the strap. My original worry with the white sports strap was that it wouldn't go well with my skin colouring (I'm fairly pasty white coloured). I think it looks better on tanned or dark skin, which is why I had originally favoured the black.

I'm in the same boat with the pasty white skin issue. I love the white band though!

On a side note, I thought there was supposed to be a new guided tour video daily. I haven't seen one since the first 3 were posted.

Good call. One wildcard to consider is we are limiting our band selection to what's available from Apple at release. I have a feeling the 3rd party support for the watch will be on par with other idevices, so band selection will grow by leaps and bounds after a few months of release. In that respect I would imagine even better band designs for better prices compared with the Apple released bands of today. I'm not a fan of their leather bands at all so I'm hoping some healthy competition from a competitor will yield a better selection.

Would love to get the White, only thing is how's it going to look in a few weeks / months.

I'm going black band with SS.

One thing that is pushing me towards the SS is that it's a fair bit heavier. My current watch is 190g, and I quite like the weight. I know the SS still is much lighter, but I think it would be better than the Sport. I also prefer the reflective finish as it seems more like a traditional watch to me, but I guess that's a personal thing.

Then I look at the price again :p

I'm probably going to go into the store on Friday and look at both. Though I'd like it on the 24th, I can't wear it May and the first week of June anyway as I have exams, so I suppose it's not a huge deal.

Thats what I thought as well, but the Missus said to me that this would be a dumb idea. You want to enjoy the watch , do you not?

Hi Bunnicula. I prefer the SS watch myself. But I do so much work landscaping and gardening (now that the weather is finally settling past night frosts I'll be getting back out there this week) that I wonder if I would get more enjoyment out of the lighter weight sport paired with the Spigen protective case I'm putting on it while working outdoors. I think this case will help protect the watch from abrasions against hardscape elements like lawn sculptures and pavers and retaining wall stones. It adds some bulk though so I was thinking of going light in my choice with the aluminum watch.

Depends. If you were buying the SS in the Classic Buckle, Modern Buckle, or Milanese Loop, they'd be about the same weight (Classic Buckle is lower weight) as a Sport version with a Sport band.

Since you're wanting to put a case on while landscaping, this might all come down to what you want to wear it with when you're not working and whether you think you'll be more likely to scratch it (sapphire is better for scratches) or shatter it with blunt force impact (Ion-X glass is suppose to avoid shatters best).

Same here....

My wallet says black aluminum with plastic black band....

But I wore a Nike Fuelband for a year, and I didn't like that plastic. It got scuffed up really easily, and looked awful within 5-6 months. Plus, I didn't like the feel on my wrists. I bet those with the plastic bands will be replacing them every 6-8 months.

I've worn a leather band on my watch for the past 30 years, and I love the feel of the leather.

So, I WANT the SS with leather band, it's just do I want it for almost double the price?

I'm I correct in saying if you buy the sport you get 2 bands(different sizes) but if you buy the SS with band you only get 1 band?

This is exactly my process too. I had all but definitively decided on the cheaper option, the black sport watch, because a) it's a first gen product so there may be issues b) the product will likely advance very quickly/significantly over the next 1-2 years c) there is identical functionality between the watches d) the jury is still out on how successfull/useful it will be.

But within the past 12 hours I've starting thinking the $200 may be worth it because a) the watch is a device that I will be wearing on my person and displaying to the world every single day b) I want to enjoy the look/feel of the watch c) the SS is a more durable, more classy, and better feeling material. d) I don't want to feel like I have a cheap toy on my wrist, I want it to feel fancy

sooo.... basically I don't know. I'm thinking I'll pre-order the sport, because I think that's most likely to sell out first. Then I'll make a try-on appointment to look at them both

Yeah. Do you really want to wear a watch for a year and always be saying to yourself "its ok that I didn't get the one I really wanted because I saved some money for the next one that comes out". You'll hate it.

kinda glad we don't get all these options with the iPhones !

it would take all year to decide then the next one would be out !!

It is very deliberate that the watch comes with all these options. Phones are no longer optional or luxury items - they are a commodity. Just like your car, you accept that they all look the same with slight variations, as they are so common and fundamental. Watches, on the other hand, are purely optional, and worn not just for their functionality but for their style and appearance.

The 'logical' decision-making factors make sense for commodity items like phones, but are probably not the right approach for such personal, fashion-centric things like watches - you need to choose with your gut, your heart and your sense of style/fashion etc.

I want to get the SS, but then the sensible head kicks in and I can get the Sport with white band and then get a black band on top of that and still have £140 in the pocket....

Time to finalise decisions . . .

I think this part is really important to the decision. You'll be wearing this every. single. day. Personally, I need to like mine a lot because I'm not a big watch wearer nowadays. So spending the ridiculous amount on the Black SS will yield better results on my desire to use it constantly :D

I agree with you completely and this has been my perspective but then I think I'm trying to justify dropping the $$$ for the Black SS. I will have to look at this all day long for the next year and I haven't been a watch wearer for years.

I also think about all those who spend much more on watches to justify it but I realize there are those apple watch vs "real watch" valuation debates that make the comparison of cost difficult.

I go back and forth between the Black SS and Black Aluminum multiple times daily. When I'm trying to be fiscally responsible I think Aluminum and then when I think I'll go all in I think SS.
