According to your logic, OP, people can never be disappointed by the iPhone as long as it receives upgrades.

Sure it has a spec bump and a slightly larger screen but the competition is well past the new ip5 and they have been released for a while. Apple have officially fallen behind, the ip4 was the best phone on the market when it was released, the ip5 is not. No doubt the core Apple fans will still buy it, but im guarantee a large portion of tech heads like me will be moving to an Android phone.
I think you are correct, but I also think you'd be surprised to find out how few "tech heads" there are.

iPhone's target demographic has gone away from people that require "the best" and is now clearly more targeted at the soccer moms and high schoolers...and it will sell well to those types and they make up a lot of the population.

like what? i saw the s3 in the store yesterday. it's nice but what does it do the iphone doesn't?

Much larger more usable display thats great for reading emails.
Removeable battery.
Faster camera.
Picture sharing.

Maybe more but I guess the biggest disappointment to me is the screen size. Second would be the hardware design. Todays announcement brought the same low level of excitement to the public that the 4S did....wasn't much.

I for one was truly hoping for a remarkably refreshed design, something entirely new, after all....Apple has instilled these expectations in us over the years and they have delivered for the most part...until today.

This would've been a great design maybe last year, but there are already phones out just as good if not better than this .
I have to honestly disagree. The iPhone has been one of the best looking smartphones out since day 1 and still remains that way.

Also to those concerned about battery life. My guess is that it'll be similar to the 4.

Well it looks like an iPhone but it's made of plastic and is about ten times as laggy (not even because the hardware is bad, but because Samsung's TouchWiz is utterly terrible and would make anything grind to a halt), plus you get the luxury of never getting any OS updates after about six months of the phone's release :)

That's totally subjective.

I respect your right to believe that, but from my perspective, I think the S3 is more elegant than this new iPhone 5 with an elongated design that I find to be awkward and unattractive.

However, I do know that my opinion is just that.

Crappy OS?

Seriously?

You obviously have never used ICS or Jellybean. Jellybean is every bit as smooth as iOS and some reviewers have called Jellybean the finest mobile OS ever created.

That comment may fly on this myopic board, but would never be accepted in the real world.

This is not your big brother's Apple anymore...things have changed.

I have two phones. An iphone for personal, and an android for work.

just because we dont agree on which OS we like doesn't mean my opinion is any less informed than yours.

Not sure what the issue is.. Everyone is looking for that amazing revolutionary thing like the first one.. but that simply doesn't exist..

Sure it does. Samsung unveiled several things on the S3 no other phone before has had like smart stay, palm sweep, pop up play and buddy share. Thats innovation. Apple has once again just taken things that have been around for years on other phones, added them to the iphone and tried to pass it off as something new and incredible. Fail.

Yep you are right, the ip5 will still sell plenty of units, but it will be interesting to see if it breaks the same records the ip4 did. You do realize tech heads are the ones that make a product popular initially, tech heads like me made the ip4 popular by spreading the good word. I will now recommend other phones to the people i know that have less knowledge.

Seriously. ICS or JB may be leaps and bounds ahead of where Android used to be, but there are plenty of us who jumped on board during the Donut/Eclair/Honeycomb days. My 18 months with Android completely and unequivocally turned me off of Google's mess of an OS. iOS may be "behind the times" in some areas but it works every time I need it to; something that couldn't be said for the aluminum brick sitting in my desk drawer.

And yes, I rooted it. I tried every combination of ROM and kernel, and each one made it better in some ways and worse in others. I don't have time (or authorization, now that my organization supports BYOD) to screw with hacking what should be a solid OS out of the box. Rooting / Jailbreaking should exist to improve, not "fix."

Actually, my S3 is lightning fast and TouchWiz is decent, although I prefer Nova Launcher, so I use it.

I've had my phone for two months and have already received a software update with a jellybean update set for October.

Next.

Apple doesn't need to make a product thats not disappointing as long as it has suckers to buy their products. This guy thinks its disappointing and is still going to buy it and admits it! What new manor of brainwashing is this? "yessss I doooo like bad ideas....."

do you not understand what im saying?

yes the iphone 5 is not that great

any android would be leagues worse to me.

id be just as much of a sucker to buy an android when they are ALSO a disappointment to me. a far worse one at that.

If you use TouchWiz for a reasonable amount of time the lag will start, I know S3 owners who've confirmed this.

As for the Jelly Bean update, that's the only one you'll ever get.

I can certainly understand where you are coming from. I was just stating that ICS and JB are an entirely different Android experience and a very good one.

The 4/4S is by far the best looking smart phone. The quality and feel makes you feel like you own the Mercedes of smart phones. Would I have liked a complete redesign? Yes. Would it be difficult to make one nicer than the 4? Absolutely. Personally, I love the current design, but the lack of a width increase on the screen is the biggest turn off for me. The 5 has received quite a bit of upgrades in hardware and functionality which has to be said. iOS6...well I didn't expect anything amazing there. I am disappointed, but I'm not going to go ape ***** on the Interwebs over it. To each his own.

Did you read my post? I've already received one update, so JB will be the second.

Whether they update or not after that really doesn't matter to me, because I'm the type of person who likes to get a new phone every year or so.

And, for the record, my S3 has never been laggy. Not even a little bit.

Adapter is not $10... It shows as $29 on Apples website right now...

WOW...

-----------------------

Not a single surprise today... except for the adapter's price

I was hoping that the adaptor would come with the phone or at least the first gen phone with this new connector. I have tons of excecories with the 30 pin so this is a bummer to hear that I now have to shell out extra. It would be a different story if Aple hadn't been using the 30 pin for so long oh well I guess times change. Other then that the new phone seems cool. I would need to check out the screen size and see how that feels but I don't think it will be much of a problem. Just hope Apple doesn't go any bigger with the screen in future phones.

Can someone tell me what's so great about the Samsung Galaxy S3 that makes the new iPhone go ..poof?
1) It's cheaper
2) It isn't owned by a ****** company that constantly files lawsuits
3) It has Google Now
4) It has Micro USB
5) It has an SD card slot
6) It has a bigger screen (subjective if this is a plus or not)
7) The OS is far more advanced (subjective as to the experience though)

I have to say I am completely and utterly underwhelmed by this phone. I'm desperate to upgrade because the screen size on my iPhone 4 is starting to really grate, and it feels very unresponsive compared to newer phones too.

Pretty much every single part of me wants an S3 now, but I just know I'll regret buying a phone that doesn't have the Apple app store.

Yes, and two updates is the limit.

Fair enough, but many people are on 24 month contracts.

You using TouchWiz and the stock ROM?

While the S3 does have a bigger screen, some people don't need a bigger screen, they are looking for something more compact (like myself). I have a tablet I use when I need a "larger" experience. And I have zero need for an interchangeable battery. If I need the extra juice in the future, they sell tons of very small portable chargers that will cost you about as much as a new battery.

Faster camera? Have you compared it to the IP5? now do you know it's faster? And picture sharing? I was with two co-workers the other day trying to demo the picture sharing feature to me on their android devices and frankly... i can text my picture faster.

Regarding the design, I was a little ho-hum about it seeing it in all the picture leaks, but I just saw the video on apple's site... the phone does look pretty good. the design is much different than I thought. Take a look at the video if you get a chance. The phone is constructed well.

Bite the bullet on the s3 or wait for the next nexus phone. If your on gsm the current play store nexus for 349 can't be beat either.
