I think it's a great that they're offering a more local (more local? localer? haha) version for the Euro countries. I would bet that there would be a number of people from the UK who wouldn't buy the Western European version at the price but might buy a UK version for a little bit less (applies to any of the other local version)... good move by TomTom to probably get more customers.

I wonder if the US/Canada version will be the same... east coast, central, south and west coast maybe? Might be a little bit tougher to break up that version.

I find it odd that TomTom took as long as they did with no updates. Text to speech is the one missing component from both Sygic and Navigon. According to the listed updates for Sygic text to speech will be added in the next update, some how I doubt that Navigon will not add this feature rather quickly as they will be one of the few left that does not offer it.

I might buy TomTom if it has many positive reviews, and the cradle works well.

According to the screenshots posted at iphoneclub.nl ...The UI looks like a it's been drawn with Microsoft Paint on Windows XP. With Navigon, it feels like Windows Vista on steroids.

TTS is great but they will all have it by the end of this summer so that should not be the differentiator.

US$84 is not expensive at all. Hardware costs actually nothing when compared with software R&D. And when my device is stolen, I can get a new iPhone and reinstall the software. This is never the case for a ``Real'' Tomtom device.

Those of us who live in the city will appreciate the fact that if you leave your GPS in your car, the odds of it still being there when you return are slim.

I have left my TomTom in the car, in plain sight for over 3 years. Never had an incident - but I do live in Australia.

I spoke to TomTom support this morning about the release and the car kit. They had no idea the iPhone version was released over the weekend, and didn't know when the car kit will be available. Nice one, TomTom.

Navigon never mentions they will be updating their software with TTS. What sources show they will updating with TTS ? And by the end of summer ?

should i buy this for ipod touch? or no? would you guys do?

i know it would be kind of useless for the ipod touch,

but i don't have an iphone no more!

and i'm getting the ipod touch 3G for sure in sept!:D

Well, it's still a bad idea in the US, whether you're in a big city or not. GPS units are among the most favorite items for thieves. You're not even supposed to leave the GPS holder stuck on your windshield (a thief sees that, she/he'll break the windshield and check the glove compartment for the GPS, etc).

So, you're saying both TomTom and Navigon are terrible?

No.. Im just saying that their GUI is coincidental.

Uh, you can buy it for ipod touch, if you're a millionaire and have nothing to do with your money. I haven't heard any rumors OR guarantees about the next generation ipod touch having a GPS in it. Without that, this would be an expensive icon on your ipod touch.

Like you said, "it would be kind of useless for the ipod touch"

I would for sure wait until you have the new device. I'm sure it will still be available then.

?

I don't get it... so can you get this software in the US now? I could not find it. Why would they have it available other places and not in the US?

Had a play with the app myself, and although I've just been doing route demos, I've noticed an absence of TTS, unless I just missed it.

Also, does anyone know how to change the speed of route demos?

Because it's Monday in other parts of the world but not in parts of the US yet.

I see no resemblance other than the fact that TomToms main colour theme is grey, and Navigons is black. My XP themes blue :D

Plus, it's not like Navigon has an 'aero' interface
