My thought so far between Tom Tom and Navigion: Before that, I must confess to being one of the TomTom die hards.
Glad to see that Tom Tom is using the standard iPhone interface just like Navigon. I like being able to use the standard iPhone keyboard, pinch/spread/move the map, and move through all the items exactly the way one would expect with a typical iPhone application.
I'm really glad that TomTom has not made the mistake of following Navigon in the navigation screen itself. This is one place where the top bar and bottom bar of Navigon looks really silly. We should'nt have those when come to viewing a map, just like we would not want those top and bottom bars when viewing a picture. I like the fact that all the critical information are displayed on the map, unlike in Navigion where one has to fiddle with the top and bottom bar to rotate through those navigation information.
Tom Tom's main navigation map has the right color, right font size, right contrast; Navigion has'nt got that right yet. Navigon's road name can't really be read easily (the font size, color and contrast are wrong).
The reality view of Navigion is nice, but depend on where you're, you may never have the chance to see it at all since it is only for very few selected intersection only. Tom Tom has always been extremely strong in giving advanced correct lane instruction when approaching very complex intersection in all its products in the past, so I don't expect this to be any different with this version.
In Austrlia, Navigon is not really an option, as the its is not even capable of doing overspeeding warning, red light camera warning, speed camera warning, and school zone warning. The map is simply too outdated. The abiilty to acquire and hang on to GPS signal is poor.
Right until this morning, Sygic was my favourite. Now looks like the King is back and time to use the very best in the market again.
As far at TTS is concerned, I've never like this feature during the many years of using GPS. I've used Copilot, Garmin, iGO, TomTOm, Navigon, MapKing, Sygic in the past, and had always hated any that incorporated TTS. I much prefer it to say "Turn left on the second road", "Turn left on the next road", etc, and not pronoucing the road in a wierd manner. Further more, I don't nomally like to hunt for the road sign to read and match up the road name. If I want to do that, I simply have a quick glance for the road name anyway.
