My thought so far between Tom Tom and Navigion: Before that, I must confess to being one of the TomTom die hards.

Glad to see that Tom Tom is using the standard iPhone interface just like Navigon. I like being able to use the standard iPhone keyboard, pinch/spread/move the map, and move through all the items exactly the way one would expect with a typical iPhone application.

I'm really glad that TomTom has not made the mistake of following Navigon in the navigation screen itself. This is one place where the top bar and bottom bar of Navigon looks really silly. We should'nt have those when come to viewing a map, just like we would not want those top and bottom bars when viewing a picture. I like the fact that all the critical information are displayed on the map, unlike in Navigion where one has to fiddle with the top and bottom bar to rotate through those navigation information.

Tom Tom's main navigation map has the right color, right font size, right contrast; Navigion has'nt got that right yet. Navigon's road name can't really be read easily (the font size, color and contrast are wrong).

The reality view of Navigion is nice, but depend on where you're, you may never have the chance to see it at all since it is only for very few selected intersection only. Tom Tom has always been extremely strong in giving advanced correct lane instruction when approaching very complex intersection in all its products in the past, so I don't expect this to be any different with this version.

In Austrlia, Navigon is not really an option, as the its is not even capable of doing overspeeding warning, red light camera warning, speed camera warning, and school zone warning. The map is simply too outdated. The abiilty to acquire and hang on to GPS signal is poor.

Right until this morning, Sygic was my favourite. Now looks like the King is back and time to use the very best in the market again.;)

As far at TTS is concerned, I've never like this feature during the many years of using GPS. I've used Copilot, Garmin, iGO, TomTOm, Navigon, MapKing, Sygic in the past, and had always hated any that incorporated TTS. I much prefer it to say "Turn left on the second road", "Turn left on the next road", etc, and not pronoucing the road in a wierd manner. Further more, I don't nomally like to hunt for the road sign to read and match up the road name. If I want to do that, I simply have a quick glance for the road name anyway.

I would imagine that Navigon's sales numbers for the week of 8/17 are going to see a significant spike now that people who were on the fence waiting for TomTom can see the starting price.

Can’t wait to see a video of the Tom Tom in action on the road. As for me i am also waiting for the buddle price.

TomTom has a big problem as soon as the new G-Map update comes out. They were the first turn by turn App on the iPhone ( before 3.0 ) and for the price($34.00), not bad.

TomTom with the needed cradle is $199.00

Go ahead .....

get it DumDum

Cradle is not needed to use the TomTom app.

Also the cradle won't be $100; oh yeah and G-Maps is pretty pathetic when it comes to Nav apps.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. I get all the same information in my Navigon app, right on the screen, without having to "fiddle" with anything.

Navigon's reality view is at every off ramp, on every freeway, in every city I've traveled with it. As well as lane assistance. Without issue.

In the U.S., Navigon gives audible speed warnings if desired.

You're assessment of these these two applications is absolutely skewed. You've simply made things up.

G-Map continues to have a lot of flaws. It is cheap though. Good to have choices in this segment.

No Lane Assist?

I currently have G-Map US-West app loaded on my iphone, and although it is not great, at least it offers "Lane Assist" and "Real View" of major highway intersections. From just looking at the description and screen views of the TomTom app on the itunes store, it seems that TomTom does not offer either of these features. Can somebody who already bought the TomTom app tell me if it does include Lane Assist.

WOW...Navigon jumped up to #1 on the paid apps list in the navigation category. Guess a lot of people weren't too impressed with TomTom's offering. I am leaning toward Navigon too.

I wonder if the TomTom cradle will work with the Navigon app or any other app...hmm.

its also on sale

I don't get it.

I do fine with the regular google map. People made others think they needed turn-by-turn so they figured they did.

I drove from Chicago to Virginia with the Goggle map. Google maps was all I used to get around Virginia for about 4 months.

Navigon would have to code their app to work with the cradle. Could be done as I highly doubt TT has any built-in checks in the dock to verify it's a TT app being used. I'm sure if enough people request it, it'll happen.

I'm debating between Navigon and TT, so we'll see how things play out in the coming days.

I just took it for a quick drive and have to say it worked perfectly, very impressed. I cannot wait for the dock now, hopefully its cheap.

That's nice, I can navigate by using the stars if I so chose. I don't even need a map at all. That doesn't mean that I will not use a TBT if I have the option to. There are many benefits to having a TBT over simply using a map; whether paper based or digital.

i use Google Maps too but i find myself looking at my phone and not the road when i do this. Voice Nav would reduce the number of times i need to look at my phone. Thats enough reason for me it least. Dont get me Wrong google maps is a great feature of the iphone.

Map Updates

One other thing that I noticed about the TomTom app is it says nothing in the itunes description about what will be included in future updates. I am wondering if only addition Features will be available for free in future updates, or if TomTom will also be including future Map Updates for free too...

Please dont go with Navigon.. Ive tested iGo, Sygic, Navigon and G maps, and Navigon performs the worst. iGo so far performed the best, sat lock was quick, precision tracking and very fast refresh.

However, I'm probably getting TomTom since I cant imagine that app being bad.
Just stay away from Navigon.

OK. So you had a negative experience with Navigon. There are plenty of us who have found it to be an excellent application. No reason to tell the guy to avoid it like the plague. Let him make an educated decision.

It's almost 2AM here and it's time for people go to sleep and get ready to work tomorrow morning instead of driving... Im going to test this at 7AM.
