No. All solutions for under display fingerprint scanner (optical or ultrasonic) are still inferior to plain capacitive scanner.

Optical ones are slower, less accurate, and requires lighting up the secrion of the screen. Ultrasonic ones can interfere with screen protectors, and still not as accurate as capacitive.
*cough* use the the power button then.

Don't care about under the display finger print thing. But why not put it in the sleep wake button like the iPad? Along with face-id they can complement each other.

What? If you have an Apple Watch, it does help because you use it for Apple Pay. Phone never leaves the pocket and face or touch ID not needed.
You should not need to use your watch to unlock your damn phone. Google is unifying while Apple is becoming more and more fragmented DUE TO GREED

Absolutely!!! Touch ID is yesterdays news, long live Face ID, don’t have to worry about wet fingers or dry skin anymore.
you just have to worry about having the phone directly in your face if you use it. On the counter, lean over the phone, doesn't work. On the couch, lean over to try and unlock your phone, doesn't work. Laying in bed, make sure its directly in front of your face or wont work. Too far away, doesn't work.
Faceid works if you are directly using your phone in front of your face. For me that isn't even half the time I use my phone. I have to unlock my phone with a passcode well over 15 times a day.
Touchid never had this issue with any of those things, let alone face masks.
Why is faceid better? Its really a step back in the way people use phones. I don't want to stare at my phone directly in front of my face every time I want to use it to unlock.

If faceid fails ideally I wouldnt have to put in my pwd to unlock my phone. It doesnt seem very secure in front of strangers.

It's summer during a pandemic. I'm almost always wearing either a mask, or shades, or both. FaceID is useless.

TouchID fails on my iPad far more that FaceID on my iPhone. Further, in colder climates having to take off gloves or dry hands is bothersome. My FaceID works via my watch when wearing a mask, so no problems at all. Brilliant solution.

I guess people have better fingerprint than me to wants Touch ID.
I had it on 3 devices (2 phones, 1 iPad) and it never really worked that well.

Faceid works flawlessly for me.

“however, the company may not have felt that the technology is mature enough yet to go mainstream in its flagship iPhones”

Had to laugh at this comment regarding in screen touch.
Yet it’s been on Android phones for a couple of generations and the latest versions seem to work just fine.

Why does everyone care so much about Touch ID the pandemic is over soon in the U.K. you don’t need to wear masks anymore
The US not only requires masks in many schools, but they’re now requiring proof of vaccination to engage in *some* indoor activities, like dining. Even Apple Stores require masks now but I can go to Target without one. It’s a complete dumpster fire with these rules being applied completely arbitrarily at the state, local and private level so Touch ID in this crazy environment is mandatory in my opinion. Shame on Apple for not making this a priority feature for this year’s iPhone lineup.

Speak for yourself on that one.

Anyone who thinks there will be no more variants beyond delta is somewhat “optimistic”. The virus has barely been under any selection pressure yet.

I’d rather have a phone that can do both. At least with Apple Watch unlock its not a huge issue (for me)

unlocking with Apple Watch is not the solution!!!, is jus a workaround for some!. In the car faceid does not work well, is very unsafe as I have to grab the phone or move myself to get closer to the phone and many time try more than once!.
Face ID is not more elegant, as there is the huge notch, it is not safer in the real world, how many sons have unlocked their parents phone with Face ID but NOT with Touch ID?. The technology is there, Chinese and Korean phones have it since forever now. Even Touch ID in the power button is better than the marketing fiasco of Faceid. Give me choice to authenticate!. But I will but the 13 despite being a “display upgrade” only…
You’d still have the notch even without FaceID - where does the front camera and microphone go?

As far as using it in your car, why are you using it while driving? Huge safety issue, there. For music you can plug it into your audio system, and for maps (without CarPlay) it can be mounted, already unlocked.

Apple does not have agility. They take forever to implement even simple things. There is a lot of innovation happening outside Apple that Apple shamelessly is willing to copy. But even so, they are really slow. They keep talking about perfecting while half the features are barely used by customers. You can perfect it if customers like it.

Jeeze. Ya think they should work on the battery? My launch day iPhone 12 Pro battery (10 months old) was down to 88% max charge capacity and it felt like it (phone stopped lasting all day). Had to pay to get the battery replaced (since Apple won't replace unless it's at 80% or lower). I do not plan to getting a phone this year on GP now.

Apples falling behind on necessities like underscreen Touch ID in the middle of a pandemic. That should be a top priority
Don’t understand why apple is so hesitant in making hardware changes. It’s probably because people buy an iPhone no matter what they give them

Can someone tell me what is the use of the watch unlocking the phone (when wearing a mask) when it doesn't carry over to unlocking any app that uses FaceID? Makes my phone pretty useless to then have to copy and paste passwords to virtually every app. Why wasn't the Face Id 'approval' of the watch unlock able to be 'carried on' to the apps?
I just type in my passcode if I'm wearing a mask. You have to copy and paste your passwords?
