...and nothing of value was lost. FaceID is superior and tying authentication to the Watch when wearing a face mask just sealed the deal.
Why not just leave your phone unlocked? If somebody is going to steal your phone, do you honestly think that they won't steal your watch, too?

Won't be buying another iPhone due to no Touch ID and also WiFi randomly stops working on my iPhone 12, many people have this issue and Apple won't address it (most likely a costly hardware defect). Masks aren't going anywhere for a long time, I refuse to do at least another year of Face ID failures. Incredibly frustrating to use your own, very expensive, phone! No thanks. The competition have best of both worlds already for many years. Bye Apple.

This place (and tech youtube area) is literally the only place where people complain about this.

None of my friends with iPhones ever bring it up. They just put in their 4 digit PIN and go on with their lives.

Ugh, I was really hoping for a 13 mini with TouchID. Now, given the 14 sounds unlikely to have a mini model, I'm going to have to choose :/

Here's hoping they toss a TouchID sensor in the power button, like the iPad Air, and that just hasnt leaked yet

FWIW taking off the watch locks it, and prevents it from unlocking anything else. I still don't think that it's a reasonable replacement for touchID, but it doesnt have the problem you're mentioning

Why not just remove both Face ID and Touch ID?

iPhone content will be searched and monitored by Apple (and others) everyday with the next update anyway 😅

what’s the point?

It’s very obvious that Apple milks the iPhone. And clearly they wil NOT pack an iPhone with all the new features they can come up with. They have to safe some gimmick for the next year’s lineup…
Exactly... Related to the plateau thing I mentioned in another post...

This reminds me of having a bigger screen on the iPhone it took Apple years to realize that’s what people wanted
Underscreen Touch ID Is a necessity not a luxury and should be included with Face ID on the iPhone

Even if that were true, the fact is that FaceID remains awkward while using the phone for payments. I have to angle my face down to the level of the phone held at waist level in Trader Joe's for example. TouchID would solve this problem. FaceID is great for most cases (and when paired with a Apple Watch it even works well enough with a mask), but let's not pretend that having TouchID also wouldn't be a welcome improvement.
Why do you have to angle your face down to the level of the phone held at waist level? You unlock the phone at a convenient height, and then move it to the payment station.

I've preordered the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 - 512GB. It has a finger print scanner, face recognition, and passcode for unlocking. Oh, and it is a phone and "Mini" sized (nearly bezel-less) tablet in one. The only downside is Android but with Apple's upcoming spyware Android doesn't look all that bad anymore. Apple is just too far behind and I for one am sick of waiting for them to catch up. If I end up switching to Android, I will be down to an iMac - 5K, 27-inch for Apple hardware. Sadly, the mighty is falling and it is only going to get worse this year. It is a shame. Oh well, it is nice to get excited about a new phone again for the first time since 2017. I wasn't going to get the iPhone 13 anyway as there is absolutely no draw this year whatsoever. Unless you are one of the people who gets excited about an upgraded camera for taking selfish-ies

Apple Watch does not help when you are standing in a crowded line at a store to check out since it does not work for Apple Pay. You have to pull off your mask to operate the phone in the one location where you do not want to pull off your mask in order to make your purchase. Plus, everybody around you is freaking out that you are removing your mask. Sort of defeats the purpose of Apple Pay when it is quicker to just insert your credit card.
Apple Pay works on the Apple Watch. Why would you want to use Apple Pay on your iPhone when you have the watch as well?

Why does everyone care so much about Touch ID the pandemic is over soon in the U.K. you don’t need to wear masks anymore

You are not legally required by the governments to wear face coverings, but you do still need to wear them in healthcare setting, and to use public transport in London. You are also still advised by governments to wear them in indoor locations. They naïvely beilieve people will act sensibly without a legal requirement.

But for some of use it is not even a choice, especially with attitudes like yours. I got my first vaccine dose at the start of January, and was fully vaccinated long before "normals" of my age. Unfortunately that was because I am immunocompromised, and has since been realized that there is no guarantee of how much protection I may get, if any. So I am mostly back in shielding because in public I have to depend on the kindness of people like you.

Anyway, I have an iPhone 6 that is literally falling apart, it is on its second battery and struggling to bold a charge. So I was waiting for the iPhone 13 to come out to finally replace it. Given this news I will not bother if it means things like Apple Pay become unusable to me.

Even if I were not always wearing a mask outdoors, FaceID is still not good enough for me. And I do not wear a watch, I cannot remember he last time I wore a watch. I have an iPhone in my pocket, why would I need a watch? I am not going to spend hundreds of pounds and start wearing a watch only so I can use my phone.

I do not care if there is an under-screen sensor, a standalone one on the back, or on a button. It is a basic usability feature for many people. It is just another example of tech folk not actually caring about people unlike them, or who use products differently. Which is pretty ironic for Apple — Think Similarly!

Unfortunately I find Android truly awful, so I guess now I will buy a second-hand iPhone SE 2. Which will see Apple earn nothing, and delay my eventual upgrade to a new phone. People can argue all they want about which system they prefer, (it does not have to be either/or), about masks after Covid (while ignoring people around the world who already wore masks in public due to pollution or illness), it just seems commercially stupid to me to turn away customers. Requiring the use of an unsuitable technology, to some of us, or to have to buy other devices does that.

Just a shame there are only two supported smartphone varieties so there is no real choice.

I love FaceID, and have loved it from the moment my Xs arrived almost 4 years ago. With the 12 Pro FaceID has improved. Nevertheless, there are situations where TouchID is definitely more convenient. With the pandemic, there are more and more situations where TouchID is more convenient. I have an Apple Watch, so have the workaround for when I'm wearing a mask. But it doesn't always work, and if it does, it takes relatively long to unlock the iPhone.

So, even without the personal preference / personal incompatibilites, I do hope that Apple does add TouchID in the iPhone 14. Please don't replace FaceID though. Please make sure to provide both on the same device.

“however, the company may not have felt that the technology is mature enough yet to go mainstream in its flagship iPhones”

Had to laugh at this comment regarding in screen touch.
Yet it’s been on Android phones for a couple of generations and the latest versions seem to work just fine.
Not really. The optical fingerprint readers work fine, but they’re not remotely secure since they can be unlocked with fake fingerprints. It’s the ultrasonic ones that are secure. Unfortunately those do not work worth spit. I’ve had it on two of my devices and they both suck with fingerprint recognition below 50%. I end up having to use the code to get in most of the time. That’s why Apple doesn’t use it. The ultrasonic readers are terrible and just don’t have the accuracy to meet Apple’s standards. Samsung doesn’t care since their fingerprint, face recognition, AND home location unlocking hardly ever work. Samsung just wants to be first. They don’t care that the technology sucks.

Might just have to pass...wanted to support the mini by upgrading this year, but I'm SO sick of Face ID.

TouchID was insanely fast. So fast you sometimes questioned if it unlocked before your finger touched the sensor.

Face ID and Face ID assisted by the Apple Watch are still painfully slow.

Yes - this pandemic may be over soon for many in NA and other areas that could afford to be first in line for vaccines - but, hate to say, the next one won't be far off.

And, then, there's all of those evil twins out there that keep using their siblings phones. ;)

Apple's had more than enough time. No excuse.

Yes, I'll be voting with my wallet. Was going to refresh watch, phone, airpods and mac mini this year. Think I'll hold off on the first two and contemplate alternatives for the others.

And, yes, if we had another ecosystem that was actually secure, I'd consider jumping ship.

Face ID is still better but would be nice to have both…maybe next year.

sounds like they see Touch ID for the non flagship models.

Pay with the watch if you have one. You’re just making up non-existing issues. :)
