Just out of interest, does anyone know what happens to the old traded in phones?

They are tested, refurbished and resold. There is an tremendous market out there for secondhand Apple devices. The prices lots of used iPhones reach on the wholesale market is pretty astronomical.

In my experience, one can make far, far more reselling their device directly (why do you think so many companies allow trade ins - hint: they make a lot of money on them), but who I am to tell others what to do?

Check out iCracked

I am trading in my iPhone 5S using iCracked.
1. They offered me more money than anyone else.
2. They give you the same 45 day lock in period as amazon.
3. They meet you wherever you want (Starbucks, mcdonalds, home, work etc.)
4. They give you a prepaid debit card right then and there, so you don't have to wait like you do with amazon.

They are a pretty cool company (I don't work for them btw) :)

My trade in value prior to the announcement was $335 for the 16gb 5S unlocked

My eligibility date with ATT for the 199/299/399 iPhone 6 pricing isn't until October 28. (I've got an iPhone 5.) If I choose to buy the iPhone 6 before that date, it would be $250 more. This essentially means that I'm screwed with these trade-in offers, right?

I put a Att trade-in link in my earlier post -- Just put the Serial # of phone etc into the site answer couple Q's and hit continue

I see that now, but I'm pretty sure this isn't the same offer being discussed here (trade-in vs. upgrade). According to this page, my iPhone 4 is worth $50 as a trade-in. Apparently Sprint will effectively offer $199 for the same phone in an upgrade (straight across for an iPhone 6). Possibly I am being confused by MR saying AT&T is "planning to offer" an upgrade deal, which I assumed meant it would be somewhat similar to Sprint -- better than the same, paltry trade-in value that they've always offered. Does this mean they are offering an upgrade deal, or they might be offering it in the future? Very unclear.

gotcha. if you are not going to their NEXT program then you have to wait until your contract expires. at least that is what i am seeing on both ATT when i log into my account and on Apple when i do the check upgrade availability.

use to be they would let you upgrade at the promotional/subsidized cost after 18 months, but the are pushing NEXT to make more cash.

My contract expired two years ago, so I am fully qualified for an upgrade. Even so, the AT&T website does not offer me any upgrade options, let alone a straight-across trade of an iPhone 4 for an iPhone 6, as Verizon (and Sprint?) is now doing. They say I have to call or visit a store. If AT&T is "planning to offer" any such trade they are certainly keeping it a secret.

BuyBack World is giving $190 plus $10 IPHONE6 code for my unlocked ATT 32gb 5 locked until 10/31/14. Since I cannot upgrade until 10/2 I think this is my best bet so I locked it down.

Gazelle is giving me $255 for my locked AT&T 5S. Which I think is fine. My wife's 4S (locked) is getting $100.

I still have yet to see ANY information on Verizon's site about trading in a 4S for $200.

I checked the Verizon site -- I had a 4S 32 Gb to trade in -- I will get $110 not 200 !!

https://www.trade-in.vzw.com/

My wife can get 200 for her iphone5

VZN trade in website said my 4 is worth $34!
There's a separate iPhone trade-in promotion that is different from the regular trade-in program: http://www.verizonwireless.com/supp...ade_in_program.html#iPhone Trade-in Promotion

I am still in the process of investigating on the news of the Verizon Trade In 4, 4S, 5, 5C, or 5S. From 3 different reps I spoke to within the last 18 hours it seems to be all over the map

This deal is good for both 6 and 6 Plus and all models:

1st Rep (woman) - Stated that I can place the 4, 4S, 5, 5C, or 5S and automatically receive a $200 gift (for online) or $200 credit within the store towards a new activation of a 2 year contract (subsidized). This would extend your contract from year to date and give you $200 off the 2-year pricing.

2nd Rep (male) - Stated that I can place the 4, 4S, 5, 5C, or 5S and automatically receive a $200 gift (for online) or $200 credit within the store towards a new activation of a 2 year contract (subsidized). This would extend your contract from year to date and give you $200 off the 2-year pricing.

3rd Rep (woman) - Stated that I would need to be near my upgrade date to qualify. My upgrade date for my wife's line shows (iPhone 5) 11/15/14 and my line shows 10/19/15 (Galaxy Nexus now, but sold my iPhone 5S on eBay). She stated that I was eligible for early Edge Program. She also stated that they would take $200 off the top of the retail pricing. She mentioned that I am eligible for Early Edge program, but would not get the $200 off from Retail price.

I will keep you guys posted....
The 5s should get you $300 (instead of $200): http://www.verizonwireless.com/supp...ade_in_program.html#iPhone Trade-in Promotion

Your VZ link does not give any further info. I've yet to see concrete proof backing up the trade in the iPhone 4 and get a free 6 claim.

Take a look at post #5. Seems like the retail employees haven't been briefed on this at all though... It's effective tomorrow. And as far as I can tell, there is no way to both preorder and use that gift card towards your phone purchase...

Indeed you're right. Not only because the website that you provided says so, but also if you go through the trade in process as normal without entering any promotional code at https://www.trade-in.vzw.com, the value quoted for an iPhone 5s is indeed $300.

Talked with Verizon

BEWARE:

The iPhone Trade-In Promo is only good for those that are off contract and are eligible/satisfy their upgrade date. This is bad news for 4S, 5, and 5C and 5S owners who have signed 2-year contracts and aren't eligible to upgrade.

That means asta la vista baby VZ!!! TMobile here I come.

Sad news for people under contract with VZ with the iPhone $200 promo.

How are so many of you trading in your 5S for a upgrade so soon?

I get an iphone every 2 years. I'm pretty much on the "Main" number cycle and not the "S".

I got an iphone 4, iphone 5, and now I want a 6.

I got the iphone 5 64GB exactly two years ago this month. I can't believe how much the trade in has dropped on it though compared to what I was getting for past iphone models.

I want the 128GB 399.99 upgrade... Amazon will give me $350 for my phone trade in which means i only pay 50 dollars not bad... but bad thing is amazon only gives you a gift card so basically I would have to wait until I send them my phone before I can order their phone.

It'd be nice if they allowed the trade-in for those who are still not eligible to upgrade and just gave them the $200 card (which they still have to use on Verizon for services or equipment) that they can then use for their upgrade later....but I guess there's no guarantee of that for them, so that's basically the problem with that.

It seems like apple is giving a pretty good trade in for a sprint iphone 5 32gb... around $200. Everywhere else is around $100. Anyone know if I could preorder tonight through Apple, have it delivered to an Apple store, then trade in the iphone 5 and get a credit to the phone i preordered. Kinda backwards, but want to ensure I get mine on the 19th, instead of waiting in line.

I talked to AT&T and you can order the new phone through apple tonight and trade in your old phone after you get your new one. I'll be trading in my iPhone 5 for $200.

Have a perfect condition 32gb space gray 5s with an otter box defender that I purchased in June. Really wanting around $450-500. Where's the best place to get that much before next Friday?

Obviously it's the iPhone 5 and perspective is making it look smaller.

The iPhone 5 is the same size as the iPhone 5S and 5C that it is touching. Perspective isn't that extreme at the distance of the width of the iPhone 5.

iPhone 4/4S?

4/4S doesn't have that ratio screen, I think they were trying to pass it off as a 4/4S, and just shank a 5.

The Trade-In program at AT&T owned and operated retail locations, including online at att.com, provides an AT&T Promotion Card that is valid for a minimum of 90 days from the date of issuance and will expire upon the date shown on the card.
If I trade in three iPhone 4S phones for $600, I should have time to use the promotion cards on future bills assuming the expiration date is at least one or maybe two months beyond that 90-day minimum valid timeframe.

They will if you're close to your upgrade date and you're account is in good standing. They'll move your upgrade date up for you and you can take advantage of the promotion.

I was not till 9/18 and they still did it for me (moved me up to now)

Depends on how close it is, and even then it's not always the case--no real set rule in place, just how some representatives choose to feel pretty much.

Probably true. He did give several reasons that he was doing it for me ("you're account is in good standing", "you've never missed a bill or been late", "you've been with us....forever")

So maybe it's a case-by-case basis

Yeah, very much so. I was able to do it for my line by a bit a couple of years ago, but then my wife who has pretty much the same type of line (for as long as I've had it with the same types of payments and never being late and all that) couldn't do it after speaking with 3 different representatives.
