I wonder if we’ll ever reach this on phones:

Wow. The concept is awesome. I might prefer this over a new DSLR for portability.

This is getting comical with the camera lenses... if you're so into photography, do yourself a favor and buy a real DSLR camera. Let's keep innovating the smartphone in other areas, the camera has received enough attention already.

Better pictures are only a by product of the goal here. These multiple cameras are there to deliver better AR experiences

More energy efficient with battery, less fragile material, stronger and more reliable OS are the core things in my opinion.
Oh, and lower the price.
Those aren't innovation per se, but a fix for the already broken things. They can start to when those problems are all mitigated smoothly. I'll wait.

How about working on getting rid of the protrusion?

Even Apple can't break the laws of optical physics.

However, instead of faulting the camera module for protruding (again physics will not budge), recognize the real issue is the "thinning" of the phone to less than the thickness of a fundamental part. The easy solution is the iPhone 5 solution: make the camera body the same thickness as the module.

Bonus: fill the new-found space with all of the consumer wants not able to fit into the "thinner" as available now.

Personal opinion but AR seems like an innovation for the hell of inventing something (unless you are a hardcore gamer maybe)

Just like Siri I find it just too inconvenient.

Siri = I am happy when I do not have to talk for a minute in my spare time. I don’t want to think what I want it to do. I rather press a few button and know it will end up correct.

AR = holding up your phone like an idiot in public, getting it do show you stuff you could just look up yourself

I think there’s a lot of value in AR, but not in the way you describe. I fail to understand its usefulness on the smart phone. It seems like a gimmick. But that doesn’t mean AR has no value. We’ve all seen the sci-fi movies with windshields and helmets with AR displays. I can think of many situations where a hands free AR display would be incredibly valuable. The smart phone is a very poor illustration of AR’s potential.

I’m not sure if Apple will get into the AR hardware category beyond the iPhone, which I think is really just a way to build and test AR features. I think the long plan here is to have the most mature AR platform and position Apple devices (watch, iPhone) as best for driving third party AR hardware.

Because you can't break the rules of physics? A certain focal length is needed.

Camera is where tech is progressing. CPU, battery, screen... these techs are at a plateau.

Each major new iPhone model has seen progressions with the CPU and GPU, and the iPhone X has an OLED screen (new to iPhone). So I would not say the tech is at a plateau.

Regarding the 3 cameras, they should arrange in a honeycomb arrangement. Would that not give them better depth capturing?

There's been a persistent lack of balance between hardware and software. Bad.

They need to work on fixing low light photos on the X; they look awful. Move the flash so that it’s not inside of the same housing as the lens. No one talks about this, but it has ruined so many photos for me and not just ones taken in low light.
When the sun goes down, grab a fast prime and a proper camera =)

Forget about the triple-lens and offer the phones for less than $1000 again. My view.

If only Apple still sold phones under $1,000, that would be awesome!

  • iPhone SE: $349 - $449
  • iPhone 6s: $449 - $649
  • iPhone 7: $549 - $769
  • iPhone 8: $699 - $949
  • iPhone X: $999 - $1,149

You can get a new iPhone from Apple starting at $349, a budget price for a very capable smartphone. Or work your way up and pay more, and receive more speed and features. Pay $999/$1,149 and receive the most speed and features. You don't have to buy the $1,000 phone, but since the X came out, the public's perception is "WTF, iPhones now cost over $1k, this is ridiculous, way too expensive!!"

In fact, iPhones are cheaper than they ever have been.

As long as they don't do what they did with the "Plus" models and only added the newest tech to that version leaving those who don't want a phablet in their pocket to wait 1 year until it came to the lesser model.

To me the - if it is - X and X+ should both have the same features except for the size difference to allow for choice and leave the features off the low cost LCD model if it comes out

What I want in an iPhone:

1. No notch
2. Less expensive
3. No camera hump
4. Lighter-weight
5. OLED display without PWM (flickering)

The iPhone X is the point here. Apple changed its strategy significantly and tested the price sensitivity of its customer base. Before you were able to purchase the flagship model without this ridiculous premium. I don’t care Apple is willing to still provide me 3 year old models for the discounts you listed.

I'm going to write something about how good my 7 Plus still is so I don't get tempted buying a new phone now that I'm triggered by this article about a possible new iPhone.

It still works great!

The 8 is the current flagship and the X is the luxury/test model.
