Personally I’m quite indifferent towards this rumour. I don’t think I used any AR capabilities of my phone :/

I’m really thinking we’ve reached a plateau in smartphone development

Useless feature for me. Just update the guts of the SE and release the SE2 in the same form factor with both a home button and a headphone jack....please.

You may be right with regard to the ‘phone’ portion of the device. But, as many only use it for calls maybe a few times per day, it’s actually the data communications, sensors, and computing capabilities that are the most important features to the buyer.

If only Apple still sold phones under $1,000, that would be awesome!

  • iPhone SE: $349 - $449
  • iPhone 6s: $449 - $649
  • iPhone 7: $549 - $769
  • iPhone 8: $699 - $949
  • iPhone X: $999 - $1,149

You can get a new iPhone from Apple starting at $349, a budget price for a very capable smartphone. Or work your way up and pay more, and receive more speed and features. Pay $999/$1,149 and receive the most speed and features. You don't have to buy the $1,000 phone, but since the X came out, the public's perception is "WTF, iPhones now cost over $1k, this is ridiculous, way too expensive!!"

In fact, iPhones are cheaper than they ever have been.
To get the best of the best, you're spending more money. You could always save yourself some money by getting older phones, that hasn't changed. What's changed is Apple's premium phone costs $1,000, while it used to cost $600 - 700 to get the latest and greatest. Definitely a reason to complain if you're one to complain.

This actually makes a lot of sense. It's a clever solution to optical zoom without the constraints of a telescopic lens that is only possible with digital photography. I'm surprised this wasn't thought of long ago.

Digital photography can provide a seamless transition between one lens to the other by overlapping images at sweet spots where 2 lenses' view coexists.

The next evolution in this technology could come with miniaturized lenses and sensors with dozens of cameras hidden under a glass or even hidden in a screen between pixels. Multiple lenses with different optical lengths for zoom and apertures for varying low light capabilities.

The 8 is the current flagship and the X is the luxury/test model.

I disagree on this but clearly there are different points of view. But to me the flagship presents the technological leadership within a product line. Test model, only in regards to its price point. Besides, I strongly believe the X line will continue to exist. We’ll see.

This is getting comical with the camera lenses... if you're so into photography, do yourself a favor and buy a real DSLR camera. Let's keep innovating the smartphone in other areas, the camera has received enough attention already.

EDIT: oh, and hardly anyone is using or wants to use AR... it's a lot to bet on an unproven technology. AR could easily go the way of 3D movies. Don't mean to upset all the Pokeman Go players but...

I have to respectfully disagree. I have a great Prosumer level Canon DSLR with a variety of professional grade lenses. They take amazing photos but I don't carry all that gear with me everywhere I go. I am happy that Apple (and others) continue to push the envelope of compact digital photography.

I also understand the skepticism about AR. The public is rightfully wary of such technology after all the failed attempts of brining 3D viewing to home television. However, I really do think AR has an incredibly bright future. Pokeman Go (which I have never played) is just the beginning of what AR can be used for. It will be a great platform for games but I think its use in business is even greater but we will not see its full potential until Apple (or someone) comes out with a functional and stylish head set that people aren't embarrassed to wear in public. AR apps / technology and AR headsets are very limited in their potential by themselves but whoever comes out first with both is going to make a fortune. Hopefully Apple won't be 4 years late to enter the market like they were with HomePod.

I have tried using the AR apps from time to time, but there just isn't a real need for it yet.

I think that this will be a feature for the iPhone X plus - or whatever it’s going to be called. The big OLED screen model.

As many on this thread have said it’s hard to see AVR catching on on a phone but hey, having it on the mose expensive phone will help off set the development cost that they’re putting into AVR, you’ll have x3 optical zoom and something cool to show off.

It’s really hard to see AVR being useful until it can be put into some sort of glasses (even if you just wear them at home or in the car). Or even in a car.

I wonder if we’ll ever reach this on phones:

Does anyone else feel like this is building up to be a Saturday Night Live sketch. Like with the razors. Now they have 3 lenses. Now they have 4. Introducing the 37 lens Iphone. lol

Tip: If you have read this article, you will know why. Personally, I would even hope for another lens (IR) for temperature measurements within the Health app.....

I have the ONLY working (Motion Photography) Dual Camera / Portrait Mode feature in one of my apps, & it clearly illustrates how tough it is to "align the camera to photo subjects" ... & by that I mean, relying-upon the existing Apple Frameworks.

I personally believe Attachment Cameras (w/o their inherent size / lens restrictions) may be the much smarter way to go, even for Apple.
My neice went from iOS to Android. She really loves her Moto and Moto mods, the camera and boom stereo speaker. I must admit I enjoyed them when I toyed with the it. Apple should look seriously at that. I can't get rid of my phone cause I love having HiFi DAC.

Isn't this just an example of "everything costs more these days" ?

Other companies are guilty of this too. Samsung's current flagship phones cost more than they ever have.

I don't remember the original Galaxy S at $700 or the original Galaxy Note at $950... for instance.

BTW... I'm not saying I'm happy about any of this. But what are ya gonna do.

There's always the option to not buy from Apple.

Huawei P20 already has 3 lenses on their phone. Once again Apple copying Android. Keep trying to innovate or let others innovate and just copy, the Apple way. Just fanning the flames, having a little fun from Colorado.
