It’s frustrating because it’s not working for me. It only plays in SDR. My TV is only capable of HDR10 and not Dolby Vision. I wonder if this has something to do with it.

Same here! HDR TV , HDR setting match enabled and now DV WonderWoman only plays in SDR :( No highlights, no base line HDR or fake HDR, just standard colours.
New HDR mode switching was all going well up until this point ie Netflix . Why can’t you support both standards properly! It’s like a Format war we don’t won’t, to chose sides. & your doing everything backwards!!

How do u get the “Get Public Beta” option on your ATV 4k? I signed up with my Apple ID about an hour ago but the option isn’t showing up on my ATV yet.

I believe all 4K Netflix in Dolby Vision is also encoded in HDR10
That’s what I thought too, but it’s definitely not displaying correctly. I also noticed that Blade Runner that says it’s in Dolby Vision has really odd color issues. Like the blacks are too gray.

HDR has to be enabled for this to work. As mentioned earlier this is app dependent. Once HDR is enabled apps will control the dynamic range and refresh rates. For a true test we need a properly coded app that will take the TV out of HDR and into SDR.

But it seems like this is happening for people with Dolby Vision capable sets in Netflix already. My TV automatically switches to HDR in Movies but not in Netflix

I have accepted beta updates selected since installing aptv4k via software update screen.
Though no tvOS 11.2 beta yet, there has been a few tvOS 11+11.1 updates.
Thankfuly My Sony t.v. Has been happily auto selecting 2160p since install.
I’ll look forward to 11.2 though no hdr enabled t.v. For me-at least next few years.
Can’t beleive hdr costs have dropped rapidly,
I could’t Find any patience when purchasing sony 4k t.v. -non hdr-Argos same day delivery.
Sony t.v. Was at an acceptable purchase cost at the time.
Had to get loads of UHD via Skyq.
HD+4K sdr/Netflix Dolby Vision -complete my home entertainment for quite some time.
Thinking ahead to 2018 -smart home lights could be next years home tech upgrade plan!

Does anyone know how to downgrade Apple TV 4K? I jumped on the 11.2 beta and now one of my most used apps won’t play video.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a way to downgrade the apple tv 4k, as there is no USB-C port for restoring firmware images anymore.

Any likelihood that Apple may bring this feature to Apple TV 4th Gen in a future beta?

My 11 year old PS3 can autoswitch from 60hz to 24hz...

It's a beta. You can only really complain when it comes out of beta and you have the same issue. I have had no problems with it switching between HDR, Dolby vision and SDR/framerates on the Netflix and iTunes movies apps.

So i've updated to the 11.2 beta and everything works fine. I have my tv set to HDR 10 4:2:2, and turned to Match source dynamic range and match frame rate to on. My TV only supports HDR 10. So everything for me is in HDR 10 unless the source is SDR, then the TV switches to SDR. I have tested this with netflix and itunes movies. Everything works with switching frame rates as well. Hope this helps.

DV titles on a HDR10 TV still have fake HDR applied though - so DV Netflix titles and most itunes 4k titles still look wrong.

Watch the start of Stranger Things s2e4 - all the people look grey.

If it comes out of beta with the same issue it's sorta late to start complaining. During beta is exactly the correct time to start complaining.

Ill try to check it out tonight on the built in netflix app on the TV to see if there any differences.

If I set the default mode to be 4K HDR will it auto switch to SDR for content thats in SDR? I really only want HDR to be on when there is content thats explicitly HDR.

Also, Apple really needs to differentiate between HDR10 and Dolby Vision. It's confusing to say a film is available in Dolby Vision when you have a set thats only capable of HDR10.

It’s accurate however as the stream is Dolby Vision. If your tv is HDR only then the Apple TV does it’s best to convert it to what your TV can manage. It’s no different from advertising a film as being Dolby atmos when you don’t have Dolby atmos speakers.

Mine is set to SDR and it auto switches to HDR when HDR content is played. That way, the Apple TV UI no longer looks dark on my TV. This is working for NetFlix, haven't tested any other apps.

Is your set DV capable? Netflix will not auto switch however HDR movies on iTunes do on my HDR10 only compatible TV.

No, it's a Samsung KS8000 which from what I understand is not DV compatible. However, Netflix displays DV and it switches my set to HDR after installing 11.2 beta.

Not really sure about a lot of this stuff, but correct me if I'm wrong.....................if I want my tv (Sammy KS9800) to do all the upscaling, I set the ATV 4K to output 1080p SDR correct and both the auto switchers to on?

I’ve had luck with Dolby Vision movies on Netflix. They do switch. What I have not had any luck with are actual HDR movies. The set is already in HDR and it switches out of HDR for HDR movies.

Also iTunes movies that should be DV are reverted to SDR. Either there is an incorrect flag set or iTunes movies are all 60fps DV which the set can’t handle. Very odd.

Correct. But if you are watching actual native 4K content you would want to switch it back to 4K otherwise you loose the benefit of 4K as it would be downscaled to 1080p then upscaled to 4K by TV which wouldn't be real 4K. Also I don't think ATV can do 24Hz for 1080p, just 4K if that matters to you.

That's so odd. Mine is the opposite situation. Is your set DV compatible? Also what is your default setting set to?

Thanks cardsdoc

Thanks cardsdoc. I hadn't thought about the downscaling and then the upscale.

Updated tvOS 11.2 last night.
Noticed my 4k movie purchase since has black bars top and bottom.
Is this the view the movie editor intended.
Enjoyed trying various video formats.
Not sure if aptv4k or Sony 4k non hdr now handle any upscaling.
