Noticed my 4k movie purchase since has black bars top and bottom.
Is this the view the movie editor intended.

It depends on the technical specs of that certain movie. A movie with an aspect ratio (the proportional relationship between an image's width and heigh) of 16:9 will perfectly fit your 16:9 standard widescreen TV.

However, lots of movies have different aspect ratios. If so, one has the choice between (1) filling the TV screen but at the same time cutting the edges on the sides, or (2) don't cut edges but pay the price by having black bars top and bottom. Option 2 is most commonly used, as it is unfortunate not seeing the whole actual picture.

You can check a movie's aspect ratio for example under the technical specs section for each movie on a site like imdb.com or similar.

I don’t think the house had black bars pre 11.2

Since updating my sound from my speakers hooked up via airplay to my airport express are out of sync. Was never an issue before this 11.2 beta. I have tried restarting everything and it does not fix it. Anyone else having this issue?

So I figured out the issues with Dolby Vision and iTunes movies. Quick Start needs to be on for it to switch. Mine was set to off. As soon as I changed it back to Off HDR and DV was switching just fine.

The only two issues that remain are HDR movies in Netflix do not switch. Also it would be nice for screensavers and the UI to be in HDR but neither of those are showstoppers.

There is definitely something off with AppleTV’s conversion from DV to HDR. I tried to watch Blade Runner and the blacks looked absolutely terrible compared to my new iPhone X.

Might be the iPhone x has an OLED screen ,better blacks
Is your tv OLED?

Make sure each mode is calibrated correctly. Each mode has its own settings. One for SDR, HDR10 and DV.

Yeah, there's definitely something up with the black levels on Blade Runner.
The TV show "The OA" on Netflix also seems to have the same weird washed-out black levels.
Everything else I've tested looks great.

My TV is not OLED, but it's not just the normal slightly gray look of an LCD. It is drastic enough that my non tech-savvy girlfriend noticed a huge difference.

When I watched Spiderman: Homecoming that seemed to work alright, but I couldn't really tell a difference with HDR on or off with that movie.

What model TV do you have?

Installed tvOS beta 11.2 (took 18 hours for software update to appear for some odd reason).
Working great in auto switching content here.

Noticed screen brightness is better especially in darker scenes, and I no longer need 5-10dB more volume like before.

Really happy at Apple's responsiveness.

No black bars today whilst viewing stark trek dicovery via Netflix.
Slightly disappointed as later episodes have gone HD -I was viewing earlier episodes 4k/Dolby Vision-though that’s Netflix not related to aptv4k/tvOS11.2

Im loving this; got my ATV set to highest compatible setting 4K HDR 60Hz which is great for the OS etc...But now auto switches to DV and appropriate frame rate...All is super smooth, loving it...

Except for DV in Netflix. Anyone else getting lip sync issues with Netflix in Dolby Vision? It’s not subtle either. ITunes DV is fine. So I guess it may just be the beta and an Netflix update is required after the beta has been released.

I have no lip sync issues with Netflix in Dolby Vision (LG B6, tvOS 11.2).

The issue with elevated blacks has been reported on several forums, and some people believe it may have to do with the way the streaming version of the movie was graded. However, it varies according to which display you're watching it on: I had to adjust the black levels on my Sony X930D, but not on my Samsung Q9 or on my Philips Dolby Vision TV. Playback of the actual UHD Blu-Ray disc is virtually flawless across all three displays.

So is this beta pretty stable? It’s a minor release version, and I don’t usually do betas, but the auto switch is huuuuuge. I understand it comes with risk.

I’m having this issue too. Doesn’t seem to happen every time though. I have an LG E6 and a Marantz sr6011 between the LG and th Apple TV.

Very similar to me then; I’ve got the Denon 4300 and the LG C6.

I have got the interface at 4k SDR 50hz.

Cool, I’ll give that a try. Not sure whether that will make a difference but it’s worth a try :)

Is anybody else having an issue with netflix..the HDR/Dolby Vision Headers are missing but plays fine in 4k hdr. Also this started happening the on second day after 11.2 beta came out. My House of Cards on netflix is only showing HD and thats been like that since release day.
