Yes, I understand that. I may have worded my question wrong. Movies listed in HDR10 won't play in HDR10 without me enabling HDR. They just play in SDR. Movies listed as DV play just fine though.
Surely that is not the intended functionality. Then again this is beta.

Could anyone tell me if in the 11.2. beta the colours in HDR mode are still washed out?
I have a Sony X930E and from the internal Netflix app everything’s fine but playing the same content from the  TV 4k the colours look faded and washed out. I read about that the MENU looks like that but not the actual content. Same thing with the movies app. Screensavers look fine by the way.

It’s nice that they fixed the automatic switch between SDR and HDR in the beta but what’s the point switching to HDR if everything looks flat?
Is it fine for you? I’m on tvOS 11.1. If this doesn’t get fixed I thinking about returning it and use my old TV 4 again...

If your TV is not Dolby Vision compatible then ATV will switch to HDR mode and apply fake HDR to any Dolby Vision titles on iTunes and Netflix hence the odd colours.

Ah ok, thanks. I thought when a Netflix show shows “HDR” like stranger things or Star Trek its HDR10. My Sony will get an Dolby Vision update (soon I hope). But I thought DV titles have also an HDR10 layer or something like that. Forget where I read that. Fake HDR would explain it, I guess. A bit confusing all this. And I already read a good amount of stuff...

The Netflix app only shows Dolby Vision labels not HDR - I assume Apple have insisted on DV only streams for some reason.

When a screensaver starts it's ok for half a second and then becomes very dark
also, when playing movie in mrmc with hdr i have the same issue

did anyone encounter such behaviour?

I don't buy this fake HDR story. I have Sony ZD9 and it also is still pending the DV update.
Still "Man from U.N.C.L.E" I bought from iTunes is in DV, yet plays back in good HDR10 quality on my telly, I even channel my aTV 4K through AVR.
So I would check 2 things first
- if your aTV 4K is in HDMI 2 or 3 (the only enhanced mode capable inputs on that telly
- if you have enabled HDMI enhanced mode on that input (Settings > External Inputs > HDMI Signal Format > Enhanced format)
PS I have no netflix, so can't say anything about them, but iTunes DV movie plays back in good colors and in HDR.

You’re right the ATV Netflix app only shows DV, but the internal AndroidTV app on the Sony says HDR with the same show...
Strangely on the Netflix ATV app Star Trek showed Dolby Vision yesterday, today it disappeared though.

Thanks for the advice but I already did all that. Still the same with tvOS 11.1 and the 11.2 beta yesterday. BUT: I checked again today without changing anything and and Star Trek on the ATV looks fine! The same as in the internal app. I swear yesterday it looked really pale. The same with stranger things and Marco Polo. Don’t know what happened there. Really weird.
iTunes movies look okay. I checked deadpool and the Martian.
Time to relax I guess... ; )

Having trouble unenrolling my ATV from the tvOS 11 beta. I have read the instructions on the Apple Beta Software Program site (https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/unenroll), but the "Get Beta Updates" option no longer appears on my devices. Two Apple TV's here and they are both missing the option.

FYI... I am interesting in downgrading one of my ATV's to test an audio sync issue w/ AirPlay. I have found that the latest Public Beta (build 15K5090c) has an audio lag issue.

Anyone else here missing the "Get Beta Updates" option? Apple's instructions don't seem to address this or give a reason for the option to be missing.

So for those running the beta. Can I ask how the mode switching works.

Eg can I leave it in HDR 4K 50hz and when playing back a 1080p SDR movie it will switch to that? And then when playing 4k HDR it will switch to that mode on the fly

My understanding is that it won’t switch resolution. But it will change between HDR and SDR as well as between frame rates. The Apple TV will upscale 1080p content. This is a stab in the dark because I haven’t tested it with material that the shield tv struggled with, but it seems to do a decent job of upscaling.

Disappointing Apple didn't add a disable setting for this too. I suspect that television manufacturers like LG and Sony have done a lot more work on the built-in upscalers in their televisions than Apple could do, or has the expertise for, with Apple TV. It also makes me suspect the ATV 4k doesn't have a true 4k UI.

You’re right. Don’t know about LG but Sony is supposed to have one of the best upscalers, especially those TVs with the Z1 extreme chip. Tbh until now I didn’t see much difference between the atv and the Sony doing the upscaling but I didn’t compare them directly one after another so I could be wrong.
So to let your tv do the upscaling you have to manually set it to 1080p SDR, I think. With match dynamic range enabled it should jump to hdr when watching such content.

Yeah the upscaler in my LG oled is excellent. The Apple TV one isn’t screaming at me that it’s doing anything wrong but I’ll have a play around today. I have a few films which are pretty grainy and they looked horrendous when the Nvidia Shield tv upscaled. I’ll check to see what they’re like. I did read some chat in the early reviews that the Apple TV tended to over sharpen.

Have you tried logging out and in to your account on the tv?
I think you cannot downgrade from the beta, though.

I will check with the Sony, too. They both “should” be better...

I'm on the developers Beta - am I the only one seeing significant lip sync issues with Netflix when enabling these new options?

I reckon your troubles are all with netflix app on tvOS?
In that case, the stream info HUD could bring some clarity into what might be going on (like netflix streaming DV-only stream, without SDR or HDR10 compatibility layer), but I don't see much options to resolve this on your own.
PS would indeed be much easier for the end user, if we had a single common HDR standard.

No I have not logged out, but I suspect you are correct. I expect the "Get Beta Updates" option to re-appear once the final version of 11.2 is released to the public. Apple is really getting sloppy though with their documentation. It really should let users know that the option to unenroll only appears once running a final release candidate... if that is indeed what is @ play here.

Has anyone had an issue with HBO now? When I try to play any video it immediately quits out of the app to the home screen.
