The A6 is Triple Core Graphics.... the A5X is Quad Core Graphics... I really think they would be downgrading if they went to a simple A6, now if they did a A6X....maybe.

Also, I now need to sell an iPad 3....

Oh and THIS POST is probably enough evidence that the refreshed iPad isn't just getting a Lightning connector.

A6 iPad with Lightning here we come! Bye-Bye March iPad events

Now you know why Apple decided to name it "the new iPad." They had the iPad 3 planned the whole time for fall

Nope. It only proves Apple is testing.

This was expected & will be a near silent update. It will not include any performance or feature updates. Existing dock connector models will not be fire saled. Apple just wants consistency among all iOS products & doesn't want to wait until the next true update in the spring.
If that's the case I'll probably buy the iPad mini next week; then I'll get the iPad 4 in the spring. :)

I don't think it'll be IGZO. Seen it recently? Still in infancy and needs much more than what Apple would accept as good quality. I give it lightening, the new processor and maybe a better battery.

I won't be getting it, quite happy with my new iPad purchased in July. No I'm not envious it'll be newer, form factor will be the same and no one wiser will know the difference.

Wonder, will it be SUCH a minor update, as if Apple Care must replace your iPad, they will just give you the new one?

While I don't have anything against innovation I don't see the point in pushing out this update if they were to upgrade the iPad properly in April.
I also can't stand the fact that something I bought last April is now outdated.
Anyway there is no point getting cross about it as it is still a rumour.

its probably just a silent update and they'll focus on the iPad Mini at the keynote and throw a line about the iPad getting an lightning cable and euro LTE upgrade at the end

Since when is improving a product bad business.

Who said bad business? more of unfair business for those that bought a new ipad 2 months ago and now they will probably release a version fixing the problems of the earlier release...

I bought a 3 a few months ago instead of a laptop. My wife has an ipad 2. I believe the 3 is a 2 with a retina display upgrade. The two devices feel the same in operation.

If I were considering converting to an ipad, it would be nice to have it use the same charger as my iphone 5 :)

If they give the new pad the A6, look out. My iphone 5 is noticeably faster than my ipad 3.

No regrets btw - my ipad is an amazing piece of kit.

A year ago none of these rumours made sense to me, but I've come around. This is why they dropped the number (and why they didn't on the iPhone). Makes it easier to just revise whenever you're ready, and with as big or as small of a revision as they want. The product is iPad, whether you have the early-2012 model or the late-2012 model, or whatever happens in 2013 doesn't matter, you just buy one when you want an upgrade. Just like every other product they sell.

And really, what is the design/market argument for strict yearly cycles? It's arguable in the phone industry, where the product relies on annual support from carriers and other infrastructure, and consumers are locked into contracts. But in the tablet/computer space all it means is you can't release when new technology is ready, you can't update alongside other product line makeovers, you are guaranteed to always miss the back-to-school and holiday market, you allow competitors to easily plan around releases and/or beat you to the punch, and even consumers get into a habit of putting off purchases for the next one, rather than feeling free to buy whenever it makes sense.

I guess I just can no longer think of any reason why they shouldn't release a new iPad if they have one to release.

What I find funny is the fighting between the Apple owners on this thread. I lost my tablet interest 2 months after buying the iPad 3 and I'm glad I sold it when I did. A tablet is just a toy device for the average consumer. It's very useful for mobile business people but the iPad never replaced my PC; it was a toy that started collecting dust on my nightstand.
Sad part is that over half of the iPad 3 owners will buy this new model. I don't see how Apple will have the guts to release another model spring of next year.

Have you seen the hype, followed by lines, followed by sales hype at each launch? That's the argument. Also, as incremental as iPad updates have been, what would be the point of a 2x year update? It wouldn't do anything to sales, and just dilute the iPad excitement and the Apple brand. Plus Apple, right now, has spaced it's launches out so that each quarter has something big to drive earnings.

Annual product launches allows people to buy, digest their purchase, then buy another a year later. That's how Apple makes boat loads of money. If Apple constantly releases then it's harder for people to justify upgrading with each release and they just hold on to their existing product longer.

This might piss off my nephew who got the current iPad last month when he got his new iPhone, now he's locked into a 2 year contract with an iPad already out of date ...

If that's the kind of thing he is worrying about, then maybe he needs to change his attitude to life.

Why is it unfair? If there is a defect then bring it to the Apple store for repair/replacement.

Presumably those people that bought 2 months ago did so because they WANTED an iPad. They GOT an iPad. And my guess is that they are HAPPY with that iPad.

Apple, or any company, doesn't owe them stopping or delaying releases. Manufacturers don't need to protect resale values.

really hope we get the A6 processor. it will help out a bit with iOS 6 and the retina display!

Also, I now need to sell an iPad 3....

The A6 GPU is clocked higher than the A5X's such that performance is roughly equivalent. Overall it wouldn't make much difference. It would only be a real CPU boost going from A5X to A6. But yeah, it seems like it would make more sense to wait for an A6X with a new GPU architecture (or maybe 6 cores if they have to stick to the existing SGX543).

The reason they won't/can't just update whenever they have something new to update is it's more complicated than that. I assume Apple is a pretty schedule driven company. Yes, I'm sure they're getting new pieces of tech every day, but they're not Dell where they simply swap out the old xyz chip and replace it with the latest version and push out the new computer.

They have to, in part, set their goals at a point and work towards delivering those goals. Maybe it's possible to be constantly working on 6 month cycles for new product, but I doubt that is the case. Even 12 month cycles can be tough to meet. Of course it's getting easier to see that Apple is actually working on 24 to 36 month cycles with 12-24 month refreshes happening as updates in tech happen.

In regards to an iPad refresh now, of course they have to swap out the 30 pin for the new lightning connector - that's an easy one to expect. They didn't offer the lightning connector when the "new" iPad was released in the spring because the iPad doesn't drive enough volume to in part erase the negative comments about screwing the consumer and 3rd party companies effected by the change. The iPhone can drive that change and the iPad will follow. Any other refresh changes could happen now too, such as chip and screen changes, but I do wonder what that would do to their spring product launch, if they're going to stick with 2 annual product launches.

GOOD. Maybe now they can finally start getting out of this 12-month redesign cycle they and their customers are locked into.

It's about time. It used to be worth a "once a year" event to see what the new version of one of their big products would bring, but frankly they should save the stage presentations for either new products or major changes. It's becoming an embarrassment having to watch Tim Cook talk about one extra row of icons on an iPhone screen like it's the second coming of Christ.

No one else does this stupid 1 year thing. They put out new products when the technology is available, or they feel the time is right. It's already been shown to affect Apple's quarterly performance, because people hold off buying things if they're past about the 9th month of a 12 month cycle.

son of a ... i dont wanna sound too whiny but i want my iPad 3 replaced if they "fixed" the battery. the amount of time it takes to charge is redic. also additional euro LTE would be nice to have afrer they claimed for month that its part of the deal

The only way to fix this charging issue is to increase the amperage of the charger and the iPad internal charging circuit to accept higher amperage or decrease the size of the battery.

Meh, I still believe in the usual March update. With Lightning, IGZO displays, 128GB and SOAC die-shrink. All at once.

Anyway, iPod launch is a mess. iPhone 5 is nothing special. Coming out iPad Mini is bad enough. Revise New iPad?
So you're bitter because whatever you bought isn't the latest thing a few months later?

I'm typing this on a 2009 MacBook Pro, 2.8 GHz dual core. The model has since been updated several times with faster processors, faster memory, quad core, USB3, Thunderbolt, automatic GPU switching without logging out, Retina display etc.

Yet, to my astonishment, THE ONE I HAVE DIDN'T STOP DOING EXACTLY WHAT I PAID FOR WHEN I BOUGHT IT! Every day I have to duct tape my jaw back in place, because it keeps dropping to the floor every time I press the power button and this laptop still hasn't ceased to function. And what's even more amazing is that people with newer laptops can read what I type! I was worried that this ancient device would produce hieroglyphs on stone tablets that you have to ship to people via the Egyptian Slave Express, but no, I'm sitting here talking to the year 2012 through some amazing loophole in the space-time continuum.

If it is just the lightning connector, I don't care as much. If they revised the damn thing I will be pissed. That would not be good business at al, and not very apple like. I find this hard to believe.

Making improvements to a product is bad business? Wow, that's a classic!

Don't care if its thinner cooler or just with lightning . But if they stick an A6 chip in it then I might have to sell my 3 earlier for the updated unit

This 'Lightning connector' bit has me puzzled. Is it that much smaller than the old docking connector? Smaller as in the height of it?

It seems odd for Apple to just redesign iPad just to switch the connector on the bottom is my point and not add more power. And the whole iPad mini seems like Tim Cook declaring the ghost of Steve dead, after hearing how Jobs disliked the idea of a smaller form factor for the iPad. Still, if they pull this off, they can have their cake and eat it too. I think some people will buy the mini and not like it, just like apparently now some people that have bought the original wished it were smaller. The iPad mini is a risk taking gambit that will pay off, and perhaps other companies will realize how silly it is to have different 'divisions' that are answerable and responsible for their own 'turf' and as a result hobble their products and product development to 'save the turf', rather than 'drive sales'. If the iPad mini is successful, Apple's strategy wins and proves that what is important is 'a sale is a sale', rather than 'division 'A' is defending their turf and kills product 'J''.

And still, with the iPad getting smaller, and the iPhone getting bigger, how long until they merge. Although I find the larger Android phones cartoonish and silly at this time...
