I don't understand you people. Whether the app is named Twitter or X, it's largely the same except for...

Engagement is up, bots are down & culled faster than before, people aren't banned for having opposing opinions about things like the pandemic, Community Notes (formally Birdwatch) is actually useful now, longer video support, larger tweets (for Blue), and removal of insecure SMS 2FA - which is very unsecure.

It seems like this community just hates Musk because he says things that they don't agree with on Twitter, things you couldn't say on this forum, and only really like people that can be agreed with 100% - which is nearly impossible.

All I know is I reported 3 or 4 blatantly anti-semitic tweets, seconds later the algorithm comes back and says "sorry these look fine to us!"

I was done. I didn't sign up for a 4chan account.

Threads has been fine. Curation and moderation is a necessity on the internet. Otherwise you get Stormfront's comment section, even *******'s is more respectful.

My crazy sister deleted her Twitter account as soon as it got bought out and I no longer need to choose between reading her rants or unfollowing her and risking family drama, so on the whole I think it was a good use of 44 billion dollars.

You could have just muted her?

Fair point. Serious question: have you tried Threads? The engagement is the best by far of any social media platform and definitely by a long shot compared to the dead bird. It feels much more human. Try it if you haven’t already.
Gosh Mark, I haven't. I didn't know about all that engaging humanity. Thanks for the tip, I'm definitely going to the "human" platform from now on! I just love human interaction with humans!!!!

Except Musk has turned the platform to better expose right wing extremism. X is a place where every opinion is allowed as long as you’re willing to pay $8 a month. Musk even removed a community note debunking a wild claim of his.

I mean, the proliferation of outright white supremacy on the platform poses a problem that FAR outweighs the benefits you listed, not to mention that the factual basis of your comments is very much in question. Do you care to document your claims?

See, that's my point. As a Jew myself, I support people's rights to speak negatively about me and other races or religions. It's called freedom of speech. If I don't like the person, I can just block them. Some of it is actually funny to me, and some of it I can just block if I want to.

Asking the platform to cancel speech because you don't like it is a truly sad reaction. Our ancestors fought for freedoms that people these days are trying to strip away because they have emotional reactions to them.

Also equating Twitter/X to 4chan tells me you've probably never even been to 4chan, either.

It's there.. That's all that matters. I'm not wanting this to become political, either. If there's one thing that no one seems to understand ever is that one person's experience with "thing" is usually not always the same experience that others have with "thing".
I literally said that I’m not saying it isn’t there. I’m asking where you see it. Like who are you following that posts nazi stuff? The deflection is odd and makes me question your motive a bit.

Right. The utterly spurious and false assertion that twitter/X is a “free speech platform.”

If westerners wanted WeChat they’d be using WeChat already. This is doomed to fail and it is a shame since Twitter was truly a unique place to follow news and sports as they happened.

Facebook tried it, with a larger user base, and?

If people besides existing WeChat users wanted an "Everything app", I'm pretty sure Facebook would have a successful one by now? Or Google? Microsoft? Or Apple? Or, even PayPal, or Square?

Yet?

(hears crickets)

So, all this chaos, enough money set on fire to have literally changed the world in a positive meaningful way... for what?

It's sad, when you stop and think about it.

Free speech does not mean you have the right to express your opinions on to, nor everywhere, you wish.

The problem is that the feed no longer allows you to only see those you follow. Musk changed that. Now you get posts from all sorts of people you don’t follow.

It’s asinine Musk nonsense yet again. The “everything app” has been tried by many companies. No one in the West wants it. The issue here is that no one tells Mr. Musk “no.”

Sounds like you've been watching too much legacy media and adopting false narratives. There's so much race baiting on legacy media and from politicians that I just don't see happening in the real world on a scale that compares to what we've seen in the past.

Right. That’s the angle most “free speech” advocates making this argument consistently ignore. “Free speech” is not a phenomenon of nature. It exists as part of the legal framework. As such it has limits and boundaries. People can NOT go on a platform, say anything they want and then cry “free speech!” when it impacts others.

If people really want to make that argument they should at least look at the legal framework that defines what the term “free speech” means in America first.

Since you’ve demonstrated a tenuous understanding of what free speech means I’m disinclined to continue engaging with you any further. If you don’t believe that X is rife with white supremacist content there’s not much that can be said. Because it is. Demonstrably so. Meanwhile, I see you’ve opted not to back up any of your claims about the platform, which goes to my point above.

What’s up with this “finally” in the article title? It’s been a week since Musk came up with this wacky idea and he pushed it without anybody or anything being ready.

Smart move by Apple to keep that lunatic on their side. He now has the power to rally up the masses for no apparent reason.

But what will Google do? Searching for X turns up nothing.

Wrong. You're looking at the "For you" tab. Just switch to the "Following" tab and your problem is solved. It's at the very top of the feed...

In other words, if you ignore half of the platform’s content and functionality you’ll be fine.

I suppose you can see why that still poses a serious issue? “Hey! Just ignore the racist, nazi, white supremacy content! Problem solved.” No.

Sure, I get it. You want a leader to decide who can say what. We'll never be on the same page, regardless of your interpretation of freedom of speech... I mean, did you even read the link you posted?

In other words- you only want people to have a voice if you agree with them, and they're nice... and are too lazy to curate your own following so you don't have to see opinions you disagree with.

That isn’t my position and by attempting to put those words in my mouth you’ve now shown yourself not to be discussing in good faith.
